Im playing chronotrigger on android at work. And it remains me how pointless most non-boss encounters in jrpgs are.

There are so many. And you just repeat the same actions on them. You aren't going to run out of resources no matter how poorly you optimize them so just turn your brain off and push through the slog.
>>

The game is for children. You are an adult.
>>
Chrono Trigger is two words. Why do you idiots always do this? Now everybody is going to know you're a disgusting thirdie.
>>
Meh the game was fun but not one of my favorites. I'm selling a cartridge for $250 right now. Hurry up and buy your childhood back from me! Right now!
>>
>>12810459
I could have substituted Chrono Trigger woth nearly any jrpg and it would not change my post.

A child would have the same experience provided they had played at least 1 rpg before

why do zoomers talk about games they dont understand? Post on /v/ about Halo 3 or a game that was made for you.
>>
>>12810457
if normal encounters were hard it would just be tedious to play, and then you would want to skip them. and if you skip every battle, what's the fucking point of playing? it would be just a walking simulator.
>>
>Another "I don't like this genre's conventions but I'm gonna blame one single game for it" thread
Kill yourselves already you wastes of oxygen.

you can't focus on a game at work or listen to its music and you also can't play chrono trigger normally if you play some bad port, wtf is that thread?
>>
>>12810618
Well my post already had the root of the solution in it. Make it so you don't have endless resources so you need to actually optimize these fights that only last 2-3 rounds. Resources like how many times you can cast heal or how easily you can stack potions or elixers. Dont meed to make it brutal but I should have to put in at least SOME modicum of effort or else run out of resources in the dungeon and game over

Thats resource management. RPG fundamentals. And obviously you need to make it so avoiding fights isnt 100% safe and easy or to even have it. This is basic. Basic. Design stuff.
>>
>>12810652
I have no idea what you are saying. Im simply saying playing this reminds me of something shitty common to most JRPGS.
>>
>>12810654
Not every game needs that in my opinion. Having to retreat to town more to restock wouldn't make Chrono Trigger a better game.
>>
>>12810457
Imagine bitching about this when you can avoid most of the encounters. If this game had RANDOM encounters you'd have a point.
>>
I tried doing a low-level run of this game, and it was mostly still not too difficult until I got to Magus. For that one I REALLY had to think about what I was doing, and I ended up having to use items that would normally just sit there unused in my inventory just to have a chance at victory, and it took me a ton of tries before I managed it.

Chrono Trigger is a very easy entry-level RPG.
If constant difficulty is important to you, you should play something harder.
I consider myself a rather skilled RPG player and I die to random encounters fairly regularly. I've probably game overed on non-boss fights in RPGs like 10 times this year. (About eight of those times in X-2 Last Mission. Holy shit that game is way too fucking hard.)
>>
>>12810664
Chrono Trigger is an example. What is with you and everyone else in this thread not knowing what an example is.

If I say the song Billy Jean reminds me of a common thing about pop songs I am not talking about Billy Jean. I am talking about an entire genre. Ditto for Chrono Trigger as an example of the JRPG genre.

How can so many have such bad reading comprehension? You are full grown adults. How did your thinking get this sloppy?
>>

>>12811086
Im banning myself from using items at all. Its only 1/2 mp to cast heal. And you gain more and more mp every level. Plus half the party is healers. Forget restocking supplies. Forget relaying on the monster drops and treasure chests. Thats still an absurd amount of healing that makes it so the effects of any encounter can be wiped away using a near bottomless resource.

And practically all jrpgs are like this. Not just chrono

Like do many jrpgs the only way you could not breeze through on the basic encounters is if you made no effort what so ever to conserve resources for healing
>>
>>12811454
Okay. I'll be more clear since you didn't get it. I am saying his example, and his premise, is flawed. Chrono Trigger does not need the type of resource management he's talking about. Many RPGs don't. It isn't a hard rule of RPGs or "Basic. Design stuff." Chrono Trigger and other RPGs benefit from avoiding it, because it improves the pacing and experience they're going for.

Chrono Trigger is the example here, but not the only game which doesn't require serious resource management to be a fun experience. Clearly the game achieved what it set out to accomplish and became a widely beloved game despite lacking that, so their approach worked.

I understand it not being to your tastes, and desiring more RPGs where careful resource management is important. But it's not a requirement to build your game that way, nor does it make Chrono Trigger inherently flawed. You're just looking for a different type of RPG.
>>
>>12811474
The very point of these is resource management. Thats what it was in dnd. And the rpgs that all jrpgs descended from ultima and wizardry. Its the reason they exist. Jrpgs kept the frame work but gave you so many resources it just becomes busy work. If you want story pacing you dont make them easier. You get rid of them so you can spend time doing stuff that actually touches on story.
>>
>>12811639
Its fucking stupid. If you want a story heavy dnd style game you REDUCE the combat stuff, ESPECIALLY the trash mob encounters. And you bring in the mechanics about investigation and social. The japs literally took the hack n slash model of rpg. Which is set up to be to be max tactical combat min story. And they tried to turn it into story shit.
>>
>>12810470
They're all for children.
>>
>>12810457
Yes it's babbies first jrpg, a total waste of time for any adult
>>
>>12811639
>>12811645
There's nothing wrong with using simple combat to create a fun experience. It makes exploring the areas feel more satisfying, you get to play around with your characters abilities and feel powerful, and each character gets to express themselves through the battles. It sets the pace of exploration, makes it feel like an actual adventure where you're fighting through monsters. It's fun seeing the monsters moving through the environments, avoiding them where you can, seeing how they pop out at you. Seeing the types of monsters that appear in an area, like the weird looking mutants that drain your health in 2300 AD, adds to the flavor. Monsters make the areas feel alive and interesting.

You don't have to like this approach yourself, but it clearly works for many people.
>the very point of these
This gets to the core disagreement. You imply that, because it's an RPG and descended from certain games, it must follow the same rules of design as those games. But that isn't the case, because Chrono Trigger and many other RPGs have succeeded in making enjoyable experiences without adhering to those strict rules.

Yes, it's a simple and smooth experience. This might not be your cup of tea, but for many people it's a joy to play through. Chrono Trigger wouldn't necessarily become a stronger game with reduced or no encounters, or if you added a bunch of investigation/social mechanics. It would become a different sort of game, and whether that works would depend on how well you work those new elements into the overall experience.
>>
Important question: do you think ordinary combat can ever be enjoyable and worthwhile to include without putting meaningful pressure on your resources? I think it can. Resource pressure clearly isn't the only source of entertainment people can get out of RPG battles.
>>
>>12810457
>how pointless most non-boss encounters in jrpgs are
The point is playing the game, dumbass. This same shit can be applied to every genre since it's reductive as fuck.
>how pointless all stages except the final are for platformers
>how pointless all enemies are except for the final boss in a shooter
The point for jrpgs is the sense of progression and grind. From struggling against early enemies to eventually swatting them away like flies. Or simply enjoying the mindless grind. Acting as padding between story breakpoints to let you digest what's happened and think about what will change from here.
If you don't like playing jrpgs then don't play jrpgs.
>>
>>12811861
Legend of the dragoon makes ordinary combat fun with the timing minigame. Resource scarcity is a meme normies think is a legitimate argument because muh dark souls
>>
>>12812007
Resource scarcity was part of rpgs since they were invented on pen and paper. It was the point of the encounters
>>
The difficulty in most JRPGs is your lvl / exp.
If you don't walk around non-forced encounters and fight everything, it will be an absolute cakewalk.
You can make even Final Fantasy games somewhat hard if you run from most enemies, never summon, and don't get all the OP stuff. The boss battles are more intense and the runs aren't as long this way.
These games were made to be played by both grown 1st worlders and 3rd world children, as the smarter one, you have to create the challenge for yourself. Adding difficulty modes would just change hp / dmg and wouldn't feel right in these games.
Also, catching the rat in the rafers in that segment on android is a bitch.
>>
>>12812003
The point of stages before the last in playformers of to provide some sort of challenge. As well as strain your resources to the existent that a game over sends you back several stages or check points.

Yes, a major part of leveling up is the fun of getting stronger. Thats enhanced by encounters being about attrition "when I first went here i needed to manage my resources. Now that im 15 levels above it I dont" instead of "i didn't need to manage my resources when I first came here. Now that im 15 levels above it I still dont" Its obvious which is more rewarding
>>
>>12811861
>>12812007
Op here. Action combat like dragon is a gimmick. If I want real action combat Ill play an arpg. If I play a turn based rpg the lack of reflexes must be filled in by increased tactics. Dragoon or Mario rpg is shallow reflxes compared to a real arpg.

Can trash encounters be fun without resource management? In the long term no. Its mindless mashing without it. In the short term: yes. Trying out new skills can be fun. Seeing new enemies can be fun. Even mindless mashing is fun in brief amounts. But these cant carry the whole game. If you areny going to have resource management the trash mob encounters need to be reduced greatly.
>>
>>12810457
Chrono Cross is the better game, but this board isn't yet ready to accept the truth.
>>
>>12812348
Yeah, easy trash mobs can become annoying if they're spammed too much. I've never found Chrono Trigger to have an excessive number of encounters though. The lack of random encounters helps with that too. Plus it's a short game overall.
>>12812357
I've got no issue with someone preferring Cross, but at the same time it's even more of game where basic encounters are insignificant compared to bosses. Especially since you can run away from them 100% of the time (which OP might prefer, actually).
>>
>>12810470
No. The game exists as an aid to imagination. You imagine you're Chrono and feel like a totally awesome badass. As an adult, you can imagine better things, so it doesn't work any more. The game itself hardly matters beyond the aesthetics.
>>
>>12810654
That's why I liked how Personae 3&4 handled encounters - you only get them upon entering the dungeons. Also, they're actually animated as these blobs differing in size and color, representing enemy groups, their strength compared to yours and if they're a rare monster. They can be surprised if hit from behind (but so can your guys be hit). They can be ran past without attracting their attention if you're far away enough, battled or escaped from (some encounters can't be ran away from). It's important since you have to manage your team resources wisely (but that's different from game to game). I'd say Atlus did random encounters the right way, so that you don't get swamped every few steps with shitty mobs, but can tactically pick your fights, avoiding pointless grinding. If you had to grind for the first boss then you're retarded, that's all, since the game teaches you how to get the best persona available for a given fight.
>>
>>12812397
You do that with all games. Having resource management/tactics doesn't subtract from that unless they are very, very strict.
>>
>>12810457
>>12810470
This is why I so fervently recommend the Sega CD versions of the Lunars. People bitch about Working Designs upping the difficulty, but what they did is make regular random encounters actually something you have to pay attention to. Dungeons are long and many enemies have special attacks or resistances that you'll have to look out for and counter the various skills your party has. So there are no characters that you just blindly attack with if you want to beat the game without grinding. Which is the other great thing, by just going through the dungeons by the end your resources will be drained, you'll probably have used a bunch of healing and MP items to get through and then the boss at the end will be tough.
