It's surprising that the JRPG genre took off with this game. The dungeon designs are so fucking tedious and unfun, even for a first real effort.
It didntIt took off with DQ3
This game doesn't really get retarded until the last few dungeons, it's a perfectly fine NES JRPG for most of the playthrough.
Since we know Mother exists because Itoi played DQ2 first, how would things be if he played DQ3 as his first Dragon Warrior game?
Were the dungeoms really that bad to you guys?To me they were standard and even would say fair, only the last dungeon with the lava bottom and pits everywhere was dickish but still not that bad.To me the real pita was finding the way to Thun. I got there one and then forgot you had to go by foot and walk around the map to reach it, so for a while I was very lost... still while getting lost I found some other things, probably a few crests and stuff.Great game.
>>12811026DQ2 inspired Mother and Pokemon. What a GOAT'd lineage.
>>12811026I still think it would be more story-driven and scripted than DQ3, which is more about customizing your own adventure.
>get to the final boss only to realize I'll need to do hours of grinding just to beat him specificallyLol this is actual dogshit. All the other bad aspects were shitty enough, but that's just legendary levels of aggressive time wasting for literally no reason.
>>12811558Sounds like every RPG ever, although I don't recall having to grind to beat Malroth
>>12811568Okay I beat it through sheer autistic willpower. Luck definitely played a factor, since he didn't heal once and never did any multi hitting attacks twice in a row. As a sequel to the first game it's interesting, since it's basically a 2x of everything in DQ1, resulting in some frustrating as hell moments, but for the most part it's a huge step forward.
>>12811038>DQ2 inspired Mother and Pokemon. This isn't surprising. They're basically the only JRPGs that play like actual games instead of being movie-slop.
It's only popular due to nepotism and presale shilling.
>>12810887That was DQ1 retard
>>12810887What you call "tedious and unfun" is precisely what I and everyone at the time calls fun. You explore the dungeon, try to conserve as much ressources as possible without dying to make it the furthest, eventually run out of ressources, come back to town to replenish, then make it a little farther in the dungeon with the knownldege you've previously acquired and so on. The dungeons are usually well balanced to the point you'll often run on fumes by the time you beat them and with good preparations too. It's also mostly forgotten today how influencial the dungeon design was in DQ2, for instance the marketing made a big deal out of the fact that there were both 'dungeons' (underground caves and castle keeps) and towers. Before that, 'dungeons' in RPG design were mostly just LITERAL dungeons; but from that point onwards towers would become a staple of JRPG level design.DQ2 also has a thematic-centered dungeon with the volcano, being based around lava, which again may seem like nothing today, but which started the trend of thematic dungeons, something for instance FF1 would heavily lean into.>>12810902DQ3 sold so well on the first day, precisely because DQ2 was a big deal. Also DQ clones and console JRPGs started to become a substantial genre after DQ2, not 1, not 3. The very fact that FF1 came out at the same time as DQ3 should tell you that.(As for DQ1 I bet at least half of its sales were after DQ2 and 3, they kept advertising the game in magazines and selling it all the way through DQ4)>>12811038DQ2 is a founding pillar of the entire genre
>>12811731>(As for DQ1 I bet at least half of its sales were after DQ2 and 3, they kept advertising the game in magazines and selling it all the way through DQ4)That's what actually happened, DQ had sold something like 800k units before DQ2 and by the time DQ4 came out the game reach something like 1.5M units.
>>12811731>...from (DQ2) onwards towers would become a staple of JRPG level design.Ever heard of a game called "The Tower of Druaga"? It came out in 1984. Dragon Quest 2 came out in 1987.Claiming DQ2 invented towers in JRPGs is like claiming Sonic the Hedgehog pioneered the idea of jumping.
>>12813092Have you even played this game? It's not a JRPG, for starters.
>>12813315I actually posted that picture of the front of the box so I could ACTIVATE MY TRAP CARD if anyone made this exact argument and show you the other side where the game is clearly labeled as an RPG by Namco. To be less sarcastic, is this your argument?>Pre-DQ RPGs are not like Dragon Quest>Therefore, they are not JRPGs>Therefore Dragon Quest is the first JRPG>Therefore everything Dragon Quest did, it was the first JRPG to ever do thatEssentially being the same as a Sega fan who refuses to acknowledge the existence of Mario or any other earlier platformer and asserting ridiculous ideas like "Sonic pioneered the idea of jumping in a platforming game".
>>12813740I could fart in a bottle and call it Jazz.
>>12813740>is this your argument?Google the definition of a strawman, then come back and try again.
>rapes dragon quest in every single category
You can't call yourself a JRPG fan unless you genuinely enjoy sitting back and mindlessly grinding on random battles.I'm being serious.
>>12813749Be nice to the kid, he obviously put a lot of preparation into his "um ackshully water isn't wet" response.
