I played a few hours of it recently as research for a video I'm making and thought it was interesting. It follows the manga very closely, so its a lot of text with a few fights interspersed here and there. I only got up to Alita/Gally becoming a Hunter Warrior, which was about 3 hours in, but I wouldn't be surprised if things open up after that. It certainly doesn't feel like your typical anime cash grab and the music is pretty good too.

Probably won't play any more but I'm sure its fondly remembered by those who played it back in the day. No idea why it didn't come out in the west since the manga and OVA did. Maybe Kishiro selling the rights to James Cameron had something to do with it.

Yeah, it's not the best thing I've ever played, but as someone who's been following the manga for years I've really enjoyed it. It's a pretty fun action RPG from PS1 era. Not sure I'd recommend it to someone who's not familiar with the franchise, though, but you've got nothing to lose by giving it a shot.

It only expands on the story because Gunnm was cut short originally, the author had to rush a random ending because he was doing other things, I forgot the exact reason. So in that sense it's not expanding but is in fact -the- original story the manga couldn't do because it was cut short.

And Last Order is so fucking weird, it starts out okay but then it has a giant fighting tournament that lasts 6-7 volumes with side stories, worldbuilding and long-ass backstories about vampires and tons of side characters, Gally is barely in it other than getting a new body and pulling a deus ex machine out of nowhere. The evolution of Sechs and his fight with the biker robot was far more interesting.
Then Mars Chronicles goes full on insane with Gally being revealed to be born of a virus that makes faces grow on peoples bodies, they cut off one of those and put it on a robot body and it grew up to be a person. Seriously the most retarded thing I've ever read.
