I'm going to have a nephew or niece in a few months. How can I make sure that they grow up with good taste in vidya?
>>
My advice is that once they are 5 or 6 you give them some pretty emubox or something, but honestly even if they get good taste, later on they will want to play whatever is popular with the kids/teens regardless.
>>
>>12811421
Yeah I'm fine with that, it's normal that kids/teens gravitate towards what's popular with their peers. I would just like for them to have an appreciation for stuff that came before them and to seek out things that catch their interest not only because it's new and popular.

feeding frenzy is great from age 3 up. move the mouse eat everything, dont get eaten kids get it

You can't. You can play retro games with them and it's all good and dandy but at some point they're gonna try to fit in within their inner circles and play modern slop anyway. So enjoy the little time before they get to that point.

t. know from firsthand experience.

In the past, sons would learn their fathers' skills and occupations from their fathers directly. The attitude the comic wants to propagate leads to the current hellworld in which no skill, tradition, continuity ever gets passed down to new generations, and then said generations are butthurt because no one taught them anything anyway.

sonic 1 widescreen (genesis plus GX wide), they might not get further than level 1 but kids love it.

And OP is going to have a nephew or niece, not a child of his own, because he has no skills so no woman let him impregnate her

Even with giving your neph / niece something they'll still want to gravitate towards current day. There's nothing wrong with that, that's just how it is. But, a cheap lenovo thinkcentre with some roms goes a long way.

This is like the 4th post this week of some loser asking how to raise SOMEONE ELSE'S KIDS.

>How can I make sure that they grow up with good taste in vidya?
I'd be more concerned with making sure their parents don't make them retarded by just leaving them in front of an iPad 24/7.
>>
Lilo & Stitch trouble in paradise + widescreen fix + dgvoodoo. 5 and up. Babby girl's first 3D game. You play as stitch from level 2. Will need help with harder obstacles.

NTA but it's true that the comic you posted seems pro-modern (anti-family/tradition).
Just because you might want to share something with your son doesn't meam you're a desperate normie like one that LARP comic.
I also bet whoever did that comic doesn't have kids

it's valid to only want your kids to play older games
most modern games are evil dopamine drips refined by psychologists to take up as much time as possible to squeeze money out of you
i wish i could delete stuff like vampire survivors and megabonk from existence. any game with gambling or grinding as a core mechanic should be destroyed
>>
>>12811793
I'm looking into getting this for some basic arcade emulation from time to time, is it any good? My experiences with BSP before were pretty decent.
>>
>>12812067
>evil dopamine drips refined by psychologists to take up as much time as possible to squeeze money out of you
soooo just like arcade games where the difficulty was cranked up to 11?
>>
>>12812180
The "modern gambling mobile slop is JUST like arcade games!" narrative has never sounded convincing.
>>
>>12811416

my nephew only plays fortnite and forza. he is 13 and I unironically believe he is lost. the entire generation is retarded and useless.
>>
>>12812190
It's sad that kids have been playing the same 2 or 3 games for over a decade now.
Imagine if kids in 1996 were still playing Pacman or Donkey Kong...
In a way, modern kids are playing "retro" (to them) games lol
>>

That's your own personal experience.
All kids today play the same bunch of games, all released 10+ years ago or even 20+

Yes, sorry for noticing ludo dynamics, I'll go into Modern Narratives rehab so I will be convinced that 80s and 90s arcade games are exactly the same as downloading a modern gambling app on my phone!

By not getting near them. Don't try to force you hobby on a kid, he or she will grow to hate it quickly. Besides, it's much more better to teach them fishing, camping etc, some fun activities outdoors. Don't try to turn them into an anxiety-ridden escapist sitting inside their room all day, thinking about who is to blame for their situation (angry for having it better than a majority of people).

True. The actual concern would be not to play games, but creating ways to get them away from screens. Games are of no concern these times. If they'll come to like playing, they'll naturally start playing older games simply because majority of current games are embarrassing shit. What a dumb question.
>>
>>12812264
Thanks for showing me that we were playing mobile apps back in the 80s anon
>>
>>12812274

no one said that you stupid fucking retard. but if you can't see the parallels you're either legitimately stupid or being intentionally obtuse because you know you're wrong and you need to protect your fragile ego on on online imageboard
>>
>>12811694
If kids don’t bully you’re a normalfag and a fakecel, why would I want to live with and raise my bully?
>>
>>12812273
>they'll naturally start playing older games simply because majority of current games are embarrassing shit.
an 8 year old isn't a grumpy jaded 30-something that thinks everything released after they became an adult sucks. something like fortnite is a kid's wet dream. a simple addicting gameplay loop and you get to choose as your favorite character from whatever. you would have thought so too if it was around back then.
>>
>>12812279
Ah, finally you backpedalled.
You implied they were the same here:
>>12812202
>parallels
Vaguely, but the basis of the arcade game design (limited lives, actual gameplay, non-gambling) is not present on modern mobileslop and if you claim otherwise you're being dishonest.
I will grant you that, maybe, in a way, using quarters to play arcades is kind of, maybe, in some way, similar to modern microtransactions, but not really.
>>
You're a thoughtful uncle, OP but that level of involvement is ultimately decided by a child's parents. You are not their parent.
>>
>>12812291
>you would have thought so too if it was around back then.
You don't have to imagine, that has been Smash Bros whole gimmick
>>
The thing with Fortnite, to me, is that I don't find 3D shooters all that amazing.
I'm sad Anarchy Reigns was mishandled by Sega... It was the only online multiplayer game that I actually enjoyed.
>>
>>12812195
The library of interesting games expands greatly once you begin emulating. I began with emulating Persona 3/4, Fate/Extra, got FF7 and FF8 Steam releases. It made me remember all those console games I played at my friend's houses. When we were older, we started playing in Internet cafes. D2 was insanely popular, but Quake III Arena was a mind-blowing game for me. We naturally got into mods such as Bid For Power (Dragonball mod, very well done, not exactly balanced but still great for mindless fun). Heroes III hotseat was another one we played, but never to an actual completion, and Worms World Party was another hotseat game that was incredibly popular.

Yeah, last thing I want to do is to control what the kid likes. It's not the end of the world if they decide retro vidya is lame. There's more to life than video games even if I would like them to have an appreciation for the classics.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I'll keep them in mind.
>>
>>12812292
>Ah, finally you backpedalled.
different people retard. you know this is an anonymous forum where you don't know who you're talking to?

>the basis of the arcade game design (limited lives, actual gameplay, non-gambling) is not present on modern mobileslop and if you claim otherwise you're being dishonest.
i'm thinking higher level than that. you're getting lost in the weeds because that's the only place you think you can get a "gotcha!" in. exploitative game practices designed to suck money out of you have existed for decades. you can go ahead and not like the state of the industry today, but to act superior because you grew up with one version of it is pure nostalgia-brained retardation.
>>
>>12811416
Keep them the fuck off Youtube Kids.
>>
>>12811771
>>12812608
Parents have already said they won't let the kid have an iPad, thank God.
>>
>>12812593
You can then just say video games and any industry at all is like that and call it a day.
This was the origin of this thread's discussion:
>evil dopamine drips refined by psychologists to take up as much time as possible to squeeze money out of you
And I never said that arcade games didn't have a money sucking scheme behind them, but right off the bat, there's one thing arcades didn't do: sucking time off you. If anything, arcades wanted to DISPATCH you as soon as possible, hence the difficulty. You could get better by buying another try but the game wasn't designed to make you waste time with things like gambling or extensive time usage.
Mobile games take from arcades only the fact they are video games, but they are free to play (complete opposite to arcades, from the start), and then add elements from casino and gambling, not arcades.
The model guys like you try to paint as "just as the arcades!" is fundamentally wrong.
>>
>>12811416
Take away and destroy any and all mobile devices they might get their hands on.
>>
>>12811416
they're gonna have to play roblox and minecraft because all their friends are gonna play it, you can't really
