As a kid I NEVER did and never got my saves erased.
Now I do it just in case and because pressing reset feels good. I even do it with CD based consoles even though you don't need to do it

I used to just hold down the power button on my PC to turn it off rather than waiting for the whole shutdown process

I have builds of Win95 and 98 in PCEm and Dosbox86 and they go psycho and corrupt themselves unless I shutdown the OS properly for some reason
