How did Americans react to Final Fantasy VII coming after III?
I didn't react. I listened, which is what no one else did.

Serious FF fans and gamers either already knew or quickly learned from mags. Less informed or more casual gamers rarely cared or gave it much thought, assuming they even knew much about the previous games.I imagine there were 6 fans confused by it, but I never met any personally. People generally understood and accepted it quickly.Though the era of writing 3j for ff3 on nes was funny. People had to distinguish still because it remained common for a long time to call it 3 (the name we played it as) even when you knew it was 6.

Same for Chrono Trigger or Earthbound. Similarly the TG16 was never released in Europe and they only gave a shit about PC Engine imports (a scene which predated the Grafx anyway)

all the square fansites laid it out pretty clearly so anyone who went online looking for a guide at all would learn about FF2j/3j/5, especially once you got into emulation

There was a good amount of hate at the time at Square for "betraying" Nintendo and "spurning" Sega by releasing the game on PSX.A lot of casual FF players only found out about FF2, FF3, and FF5 (FF2j, FF3j, and FF5j, as they were referred to at the time) because of the excitement for FF7. You can find a bunch of Usenet posts in 1997 from people asking what the three missing games were.
I remember being told almost as soon as I heard about FF7 that half the previous FFs never made it to the US, it's really not that obtuse of a change since most Americans were aware that tons of video games never made it out of Japan since childhood when half the games previewed in magazines would just never be talked about.
