this can play doom nowwe are literally trapping fruit flies in the matrix where they experience pain when they take damage and get a dopamine hit when they get a kill, item, or reach the exitapparently they are just as bad at doom as they are at surviving in physical reality and survive the demons for like 8 secondsshould we even be doing this? i like doom and how it runs on everything and all but it seems unethicalwould you want to be a simulated brain getting lit up by imps, reincarnated, and then smashed again over and over until your god gets bored?

>>12817253>we are literally trapping fruit flies in the matrix where they experience pain when they take damage and get a dopamine hit when they get a kill, item, or reach the exit It's just mathematics. There's no fruit fly.
Yeah dude, it's not an actual tiny dissected fly-brain with electrodes attached being funneled into a computer or some shit lmao.
>>12817272It isn’t.

However it's done, I doubt the brain scan is conscious in any regard.
which mapset would you pick to spend the rest of eternity cybernetically trapped in?
A couple of months ago, I don't know if you anons remembered, but I posted about a nightmare I had where one of the Project-Malice enemies (The Broken) tried to come and kill me. Well last night I just had another one, starring the Voidspawn.>This time I was in Minecraft (I SWEAR this is still retro fps related, bear with me).>In a pond, probably harvesting clay for bricks or something.>As I'm doing that, I immediately hear https://voca.ro/1bUA3Xj8qian and realize this fucker is noclipping through blocks to gank me and avenge the last fucker.>I Get the fuck out of the pond, pull out a sword, and try to face the direction the noise is coming from.>Don't even know if it'll be his normal sprite or looking like a Minecraft mob, but I'm ready to fight for my life again.>This time he never shows up, the sound of him stalking for me just plays in circles around me before eventually going away, and then I wake up afterwards.Should I be concerned if this mod's enemies keep stalking me in my dreams? What the fuck do I do if next time I'm in TF2 or some shit, and https://vocaroo.com/19sZrNE2KF50 is the next thing I hear?

I nearly shat myself when I found out about the void cunts because they remind me of it, then I nearly shat myself out when I saw the level changes were basically exactly what most of that dream felt like.

Hey so I know it may be a stretch to ask this here but I haven't seen it so farIs there a Quake PAK that's close to the Neon Overdrive Doom WAD? Quake 1, 2 or 4 is fine, I just love that vibe of that WAD and want something similar on something more fully 3D
>>12817387>Arcane DimensionsI was gonna pick this or alkaline. Both a really awesome and I feel like I can get lost in them. There was an anon a few threads back that said something to the effect that he wished he could just live there instead of dealing with whatever was affecting him irl and I totally feel and get it. For me, personally I've been addicted to many things over the years and Quake is the least damaging so I'm gonna stick with it. Confront your demons; then shoot them in the face. Thank you to all the map builders, regardless of the game or the engine. You have made my life significantly better in so many ways and I couldn't possibly thank you enough. I truly appreciate you.
>>12817420Hope to be on your list soon anon, I've been casually practicing making shit over the past couple years and things are shaping up to me actually releasing something that I feel satisfied with before the year is overProbably for Q2 because I'm addicted to using scrolling textures which Q1 sadly doesn't have
Question/rant to mappers itt: How do you deal with absolute mapper block? Even if I manage to start a new map I never finish it and run out of steam quarter way in. It is not that bad in doom because the editor really facilitates sketching and dragging of sectors/lines/vertices really makes changing initial vision and morphing the map easy - I just doodle something, add details at beginning and go along with it by adding more setions. The problem arises in true 3d engines where changing what you already blocked/detailed out is harder - I just can't start anything because I don't have a complete vision of what I want at start, and I just can't imagine the whole project at start. Adding details seems like a final step in those engines, even though I love doing it immediately in doom because it is so satisfyingSo, 1)how do you deal with your imagination blocking midway through, and 2)what do you use to sketch up a map so you have something to follow in the appropriate mapping software(I'm a drawlet)
>>12817445when I'm stuck in creative block I go study other maps. Play new stuff, explore in editor things I know and like a lot to see how other mappers do things. I'm not a drawfag either so I just imagine everything in my brain. It also helps when I draw a basic top down layout on grid paper
>>12817445More or less what >>12817453 said but I play bad maps, pretty much from the same principal of this video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCOmkrwQdFc

>>12817457this is a good advice too. I played a lot of shit before getting into mapping myself
I have been producing/streaming TRVE KVLT underground black metal and Quake on my twitch channel. Currently I am using a snowy forest background but do any of you anons have some cool Quake or Doom map screenshots I could use? Preferably without any enemies. Resolution and size doesn't matter much to me, just something that would look good behind a 40 something playing guitar and wearing corpse paint.
>>12817489I guess high resolution screenshots of mapsets like GothicDM, Gothic 99, and Crucified Dreams, those are all gothic as fuck DM levels without enemies, and would look pretty kvlt.Just boot them up with your sourceport of choice and use the clean screenshot function.
working on a new hud, dunno if it's too big or not
>>12817510now this is getting serious
>>12817445i don't map anymore, but when i did, i would either just send screenshots to a fellow mapper i respect for feedback, or if the map is far enough along, load up in warmup/coop and just hop around
No, i'm not upgrading to windows 10 to play a Uzdoom exclusive.
started playing doom recentlyI don't know what they're called but the weird cackling bastards who resurrect the dead and hit you with flames are really annoying.
>>12817532They're called Uncanny Fellows. I fear them.
The state that revenant projectile smoke puffs spawns with depends on which hitscan attack has last been processed by the game. The chainsaw or any bullet attack from the player or enemies and will cause them to spawn in full, but only the player's punching attack will cause them to spawn with a shorter duration. In this video, I've used dehacked to separate the state sequences and spawn an item fog to clarify what's happening. I believe this happens because the fist weapon has special handling in order to prevent its impact puffs from making 'sparks' that glow in the dark and homing missiles spawn the same puff object. You can't tell here, but this effect will apply to all homing rev missiles simultaneously.
>>12817540Pausing the game using the bespoke pause function (not the esc key, full keyboards literally have a button labeled 'pause') will cause homing revenant missiles to forget their target about 50% of the time. Surprisingly, this behavior even works when recording demos. This was recorded under complevel 2, not sure how useful this is or if there are any rules among speedrunners about about abusing it. I believe this happens because the homing behavior of missiles is tied to game tics, but I'm not sure.
>>12817493Thanks for the tip, much appreciated.
>>12817549Here's a more extreme example, I think this could be abused consistently with some finesse. Another effect I thought was interesting was how the game can almost be played in slow motion by repeatedly pausing and unpausing. I was able to rapidly cycle it by binding pause to my mousewheel, which wouldn't ordinarily be against any speedrun rules.
>>12817532yeah same it took me way to long to realize the revenants fireballs were tracking ones. My brain didn't click even if it was just one of them alone
>>12817549what happens if you ctrl+z the process if started through a unix shell?
>>12817549I think I've seen someone use the pause-trick during a demo (might have been a TAS?). Although it was kind of a special case. The map was Revenant Waltz from Poogers, which requires you to trigger a bunch of lines using revenant projectiles.
>>12817445For 1, it's usually a case of letting the idea of the concept or map sit in the head too long and trying to keep the entire map in "the buffer" so to speak makes it harder. The solution is to go in engine to look at/work on what's been done so far. It does a lot for shaking the dust off and going "Alright, this is where it is" and you'll usually find some things to adjust to get your momentum back.As for two, despite also being a drawlet, tend to skip the sketching stage. That is a bad habit. When not doing that, the sketches are either in a notepad or CSP.
>>12817457This is really good advice, you need to see bad or broken things, it's like taking apart an appliance you don't understand how it works when you see a magical shiny white box that just works, seeing the guts through a broken case lets figure out how simple they are.

>>12817420AD is the peak of Quake mapping for me and in general, I think it's home to some of the best levels in gaming, retro or not. It's a bit nuts that it exists and is completely free.I've made some Doom maps and one Quake map, though that was just because I wanted to make sure I'd be part of Quake Brutalist Jam 3. I love brutalism and while I don't like the community that made that project happen, I still like what I made well enough. It's a shame I haven't felt the pull to make more Quake maps since, even though I started a few.>>12817445The healthier way would be to play something else entirely or read a book or something. The way I do it is start a new map, lose my shit in it and ragequit it when nothing works.Eventually, something clicks. It's easier if I have a goal in mind, which doesn't happen often.
This is completely useless for now, but I did it anyway. I can traverse the NODES lump and build subsectors just like Doom builds them. Was fun. Too dumb to look through the Doom source code for how it's done, so wrote my own algorithm. It werks© so whatever, it's not like I'm going to re-create the whole rendering engine.
What does nuked SC55 getting a license change mean for source port use?
>>12817645As I understand, that they could put it in straight and run it natively.
>>12817645it means we can listen to the music in game as bobby intended (rip)
>>12817646Ooh. That's pretty good then.
>>12817284The fruit fly thing makes me think of a city with roads built. Now we try to understand how traffic flows between all the conencted roads. I also understand it, I think, that these fruit fly simulations are basically logic/threshold gates where parts of the brain are reduced to basic (like Doom or Quake AI basic) stuff where if X is at 40% and Y is at 60%, then activate Z but do not active A. Interesting stuff but I do agree the clickbait shit of "I put a fly's brain in Minecraft!" is obnoxious
>>12817645What anon said, It means there's a point in turning it into library now, like a dll file, that can be shipped with source port so it could play the midis using Nuked. Which is objectively superior to any SC55-like soundfont. And you won't have to setup Nuked as a standalone app yourself, believe me you don't want to.
>>12817649guy who you're all flaming herei'm of the philosophical opinion there's no difference between being simulated and actually existingwe live in a simulation anyway, we've just built a recursive simulationit's only a matter of time before they figure out how to do this to the fruit flies and upload doom directly into their hardware (kinda like the difference of playing an NES game in emulation or on real hardware)it's only a matter of time before we have brains in jars calculating stuff and i just think is a really bad ideai am completely aware that it's not being run on an actual fruit fly brain, but what do you think the scientists are using this simulation to try to figure out how to do? it's the next logical step
>>12817654Oh, you're a schizo. No wonder you bought into it so easily.
>>12817650I wonder, what are the rights on this? The way I recall it, the reason that SC-55 recordings aren't used in commercial re-releases is because of Roland's ownership of the sound samples used for their original device.Does Nuked SC-55 just provide fresh new samples which are simply really authentic and close sounding? Or did they simply just permit people to use them?Obviously, I don't have the full picture here, but I'd appreciate a clarification.>>12817654>i'm of the philosophical opinion there's no difference between being simulated and actually existingI would argue that this is really rather retarded. The Imp that I'm zerk-punching into a splatter of blood and gibs isn't a living and thinking entity, neither is the Centaur that I'm gassing.>we live in a simulation anyway, we've just built a recursive simulationOh, you made a retarded argument because you're actually retarded, my bad.
>>12817659Oh shit, yeah, I forgot, you can't ship Roland samples with the source port. So at best it will be like PlayStation emulator, where you have to copy your "own" firmware files into the dedicated folder for things to work. Still I hope they'll add it.
>>12817654based on this retarded post, are there any /x/ pilled wads or other retro fps games? I can only think of some themes in AMC, but that game borrows ideas from literally everything.
>>12817445Might sound obvious but try sketching the basic layout by hand with a pencil first. It could lessen tje chance of "running into a wall" later.
>>12817668One of the things which works for me sometimes is to plain sketch out some kind of rough outline shape of a sector, which you can then start to sculpt into something.
>>12817654Wasn't flaming. Just saying that it's not really a simulation and the reality of what is going on is much more dry. >simulation vs existingWas gonna say somnething but >>12817659 beat me to it.

>>12817445I will say the process that's helped me is as followsStep 1: make a "art box" room where you experiment with aesthetic choices until you have a look you like without going too in-depth on detail or texturesStep 2: Block out the level design of the map while keeping in mind what would "fit" the style of your art box, e.g. no elevators in an ancient templeStep 3: do an initial art pass to transfer some of the color and base detail of your art box to your blocked layoutStep 4: add your enemies, entities, and playtest playing through the actual map while considering what needs to be adjusted for gameplay and where some additional visual bonuses would bring the map together more, like a hallway being open on one side to show off a waterfallStep 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you feel like you're satisfied with all the visualsStep 6: if you made your own basic assets in step 1, refine all the texturesThis may not be the best way for everyone, but the main idea is you should have a workflow of some sort, even better if it's a workflow where you can openly measure progress and have fun experimenting through the entire thing

I fucking hate and like this map at the same time. I always wish i could get into map making so i could create a wad where there is little ammo, not that much weapon choice and tough demons in general so it gives the feeling of you being a simple weak marine trying to survive a demon infested mars, where the point is more to survive and pass the level than killing demons and upgrading your arsenal...... >>12817871I would like to know this as well
>>12817979Yeah, same enemy count. You don't even get the invoker (thunderbolt equivalent) by that point either to cut through them all. I think the QBJ3 arsenal is a bit better suited for larger groups of enemies at least. The super nailgun equivalent pierces enemies and the rocket launcher shoots multiple smaller rockets. And the invoker hits a wider area too so you can potentially vaporize multiple shamlers in one go.Though from what I recall this map was ported from one of the older brutalist jams that were made around the vanilla weapons.
It's interesting seeing someones first maps and then watching them slowly improve over the course of an entire megawad's worth of a total conversion. On episode 3 of Imagination World since I wanted to get the one file so I can unlock M1911 and Jackhammer for AMC Squad. Also played through Red 1 and downloaded a bunch of Duke maps I mean to go through.

Just finished Going Down Turbo.I liked it a lot but it felt a bit easy, but then again being able to run all over the place blasting demons is a big part of the fun.Not having played the original, I'm a bit torn on it. It's great, but it's lacking the burn from a bit of hardness but it also feels like some maps would be an absolute slog to play if the difficulty was increased. Mixed feelings, in a sense.

>>12817552I've been investigating how to create new effects with mbf21 dehacked for custom weapons. For some reason, impact puffs weren't de-hardcoded with mbf21, so hitscan attacks will always spawn the usual puff object when they hit walls/floors. However, it turns out you can take advantage of the hardcoded behavior of melee attacks specifically to make them appear different. I was hoping I could just simulate a bullet attack with a really long melee attack, but it turns out the game is checking the length of the attack when it chooses how to spawn puffs. If the attack has a range of 64, it will spawn the puffs with a different animation, if it has any other range (63, 65, -99, whatever) it will spawn them normally. Still better than nothing.
>>12818124Try the original sometime for a comparison.
>claims to have a photographic memory>couldn't remember the title of REKKR when he shit on it What did the King of Deathmatch mean by this?
>>12818150Here's a slightly shitty railgun. It operates simply by spawning a bunch of objects quickly one after another until it hits a wall. The problem is that since things in this engine don't have any pitch angle, the spawned objects can't be adjusted for height and hit enemies above or below the player. Maybe someone could make use of a weapon like this with custom made maps, but generally autoaim is too important to do away with.
>>12818157He said photographic, but never mention what type of photography.
Is there a premade Doom64 EX (or EX+) file that I can just unzip?
>>12818158You can sort of fake auto-aim by using homing projectiles, but doing so requires the objects to have time to move up or down, which requires slowing it down overall. These are only slightly faster than normal projectiles can be. It doesn't quite feel the same as real auto-aim either.
>>12818158i made a railgun mod once, i copied the particle effects from quake 2 and took snapshots of a centered weapon model and converted them to doom palette should have released it as i'm never gonna find the file it was for original zdoom

>>12818164Last thing. Holding the fire buttom spawns bombs which can then be detonated remotely by pressing fire again, but it only works if you actually have line of sight to the bombs. It uses a custom splash damage attack to detonate them from a distance. When I was creating it, I expected all the bombs to explode at once, but for some reason the order seems slightly random. I'm pretty sure being able to isolate remote damage between two arbitrary objects like this has potential for other stuff, but the system has convoluted problems when used with custom enemies since it relies on unique splash immunity. This is just a proof of concept, I don't actually have any specific plans to use these for anything. >>12818929It quickly becomes not so good idea when the wad gets a big update few years later and now you don't know where to put it. The filesystem is just not that good for that. >>12819974I wonder if it's just lack of knowledge on how to configure/play them or maybe people are too tired/stressed and they don't want to learn how to setup something new - I can be like that sometimes. It hit me whilst trying to get Shadow Warrior running was that GZDoom/UZDoom/Raze just scans the Steam Directory for you copy of the game to play and that's why so many people stick to GZ/UZ etc still even when you really should be running something like DSDA/Nugget/Cherry/Nyan/Crispy etc for some maps. A lot of people don't have launchers or anything and don't know how to configure any of that nonsense up. It was a struggle finding a decent modern source port for Shadow Warrior + a modern copy of it to run - I eventually settled on Raze using the old copy of Shadow Warrior I bought on Steam years ago which I thought ran well once I was playing it in Raze. And yeah I always thought those edits were funny - the AMC crew knows how to laugh at itself but also be serious as times. So it's good I like it a lot. l thought about this the other day cause I was checking to see if there was any Shadow Warrior mods/maps to download and AMC Squad episode 2 might be one of the only real major mapping projects that is technically Shadow Warrior. That grenade launcher had me restarting Shadow Warrior to play it again but this time spam the grenade launcher on maps I didn't prior.

Raze IMO is closer to the more vanilla/limit removing ports for Doom in function etc despite being GZ derived & created for mods because of how lightweight it is. It doesn't have a billion features or bloat - the options are all quick and ez to navigate. You do have to turn off filtering but it was running some stuff better than the other source ports with less hassle to get it to run properly. I kinda hope it gets support down the road from the UZ team even if it's 100% functional and works out the box right now aside from the filtering issue. It's been like a year since it last got updated. Kinda wish Graf or someone else actually sat down and took that approach with GZ/UZ and made like a lite version that cuts all the bloat.>>12820013I was about to bookmark that only to realize I already had it bookmarked and downloaded into my Shadow Warrior folder when I went looking a few weeks back for anything else to play for SW like I did Duke/Blood.
>>12820013>quake is 2nd most talked thing about here. >>12820045>But what does .pke actually DO that .pk3 and .pk7 do not?there are some features that only work in EE that other sourceports don't support. I think EE has its own scripting language or some shit.
just moving towards Build or anything decently modded for Doom the enemy/weapon department - you usually don't have to deal with modern slaughter mapping trends typically. You might have some slaughter sections but it's usually gonna be lite and for designated combat arenas or on final maps - which I think most people don't really mind. It's climatic and you are gonna have a BFG/Rocket Launcher or the equivalent there of for that map/mod at that point and the map maker is usually pretty generous since they know people are getting used to new monsters/weapons.
playing quake without viewkick and viewroll is like playing doom and goldeneye without headbobwhy
>>12820051I know, but a .pk3 is literally just a renamed .rar or .zip archive (potentially with directories) for storing content like you do with a .wad, and .pk7 is a .7z archive renamed in the same fashion. There aren't like, any direct features tied to .pk3 and .pk7, they simply work as a more practical and modern .wad format.Does .pke just use another compression algorithm for the sake of it? I don't see any reason you couldn't put files with Eternity engine code into the others and not have them be readable just the same.

I think something I like about Build is it's kinda like Plutonia mostly in terms of design since Chaingunners (fast firing hitscanners) & Revenants (explosives) and other strong enemies tend to be the default enemy type but I have weapons I can kill the enemies in the room ahead with. Doom's arsenal doesn't let you yeet explosives around walls or down below you to kill the enemy before you enter the room.
>>12820083>Quake also gets you away from Slaughterdoes it really? modern projects tend to fall into arena combat

Done with Imagination World 2. Episode 4 was definitely vastly weaker than episode 3 (it was more focused on atmosphere and had less combat - even had stealth/horror with more of a story focus - dare I say it was a walking sim even) - far more experimental and I do appreciate it walking and testing a lot of features that would be refined in AMC over it's long development. I wouldn't recommend this desu - it didn't age well - very glitchy visuals. Had fun with it though - was kind of a weird little viewing into the mind of a teenager in the mid 2000s. It was weird mid of Duke Nukem, Star Wars, Counter Strike Condition Zero models, Adeptus Astartes models for Mikko's soldiers, eventual MJ12 and then Doom in fourth Ep. Tons of guns because it's fun. Vehicles because why not that's fun too. 3d models everywhere because you can. It's very early Z Doom tier - very experimental and less focused on having good level/combat design and more using every feature now available to them without concern over whether they should do them - I can appreciate those maps/conversions sometimes if it isn't but a lot of people justifiably dislike that period for good reason.
