Well for 4 at least there's the 6th chapter, something they said they made because people made fake rumors about one existing originally so they played along with it. 5 was really getting held back though, it only took them two remakes to add something new to it! These games really were held back by technology, yes sir.

>>12819715OP, to actually answer your question, the PSX version has a completely different town-building minigame than the DS version, so it is not superseded by it.The PSX town-building minigame has a very different story. This story is however somewhat controversial: A character who is female in the NES version is retconned to be transgender in the PSX town-building minigame.I personally consider the Japanese DS version to be the definitive way to experience the game, but almost every version has their own unique merits.
The point of a remake/remaster/port one or two generations later is to sell the same game to a whole new generation of players. Everything else surrounding it is marketing bullshit. This phenomenom is particularly obvious when it comes to balance changes which always accompany them, point being they don't care to preserve to be faithful to the original and what people liked about it at the time, they make the games easier to catter to the more modern audiance. What they're telling this new audiance is "we know you've never played the original but trust us, you can buy this, it's better version", if said audiance keeps believing that to the point that 25 years later they're still be shitting on the originals that made these versions possible, then bravo the marketing worked (because it's logical right, if those versions are better than that can only mean the originals can be dismissed).Additional content is a mean to try and drive that marketing "new=better" point through the falsely objective measure "more=better". This is particularly egrogious because additional content in that versions always tend to be of very dubious quality, and the PSX/DS version of DQ4 is a great example of this, like we're now supposed to believe the "true final boss" of the game is a fucking palswap of the chapter 5 boss except with less forms. I don't know how anyone can defend something like this and even get to the point that it's "the true developer's vision that they wanted to do originally but couldn't" but there you have it.It doesn't mean you can't enjoy those versions, but I hope at least some of you will grow up to broaden their views a little.
>>12820091I don't believe for a second that the whole "originally we wanted Cannock's sister!" thing is anything more than marketing bullshit. This is something that was never mentionned or seen anywhere before the modern version. If it really was a real thing it was probably something mentionned in pre-prod and quickly discarded like many many many other things, not something "that was planned all along but couldn't do due to technological reasons". They probably dug that idea out of the trashcan of ideas discarded early on and then use that "it was something we wanted back then!" excuse to justify it for marketing reasons. The main reason I don't buy it is that Cannock's sister doesn't fit at all for the story they were going for, the point isn't just that they're heroes together because they're family, but that they're going through similar ordeals and have similar motivations which is how they end up finding themselves. Even if we pretend for a second that DQ2 would have had 4 party members, it wouldn't have turned out like what the modern version did at all, it would have been a complete different game both in story and gameplay to begin with. The real reason behind her addition was to standardize the game to what they think DQ should is like for everyone, which is a 4 members party, something they had already done with DQ5.
>>12820091>enough time to playtest the last partAs for this, the entire belief that "DQ2 wasn't properly playtested" comes from an interview from 1987. First of all, that was mainly talked about to explain why the game was delayed from Dec 86 to Jan 87, meaning they already had that extra month just for balancing. Secondly, this was talking about the Japanese Famicom version of the game. If you played the US NES version which came out 3 and a half years later, you played the rebalanced version, they had all this time to think about what to add and what to change, and guess what, the difference is almost nothing.Further balance changes in later versions are irrelevant to this, because as I said those were already remakes for a new audiance at a time when the expected difficulty of a console JRPG was already lesser than that on Famicom. To drive this point further, the SFC remake of DQ1 and DQ3 recieved MORE balance changes than DQ2 and I don't see anyone claiming like they didn't have enough time to playtest those. This whole belief regarding DQ2's balance stems from taking a quote out of its context and misinterpreting it.
>>12819715Read the github page and look at some of the conversations going on around this, the "programmer" took an existing toolset, threw it into Claude and had it create a minumum viable product while spitting out a huge load of absolute gibberish explaining how it was done. This will never be fixed because the code is unreadable and the developer doesn't actually know what he's doing, like most of these slop ai hackjobs. There are developers who know how to program and can integrate AI code on a function to function basis, and machine translations are fine if they are transparent in that fact, this is neither and a complete waste of your time.
>>12819798He wasn't being ironic, dumbass.
>>12820874Someone years ago researched the text engine on RHDN and posted findings in public with the intent to further work on it. This patch is exactly at that state.
>>12820885Yes I was.t. the person he was replying to
>>12820785Actually I happened to look at DQ2's pixiv page some days ago and saw a part that mentions how Horii and Nakamura went on a TV program 2 years ago and mentioned DQ2's lack of playtesting. I can't find a full recording online so I'll just show the preview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDTj1zK4Miw but I did find a torrent that thankfully finished before the thread died so now I have a screenshot but fuck it I already typed the rest of this posthttps://dic.pixiv.net/a/ドラゴンクエストⅡ>(approximation) Our schedule was so tight no one in the company was able to play through the game from beginning to end before release so we couldn't properly adjust the difficulty. I myself played the game after release and got thrown into the depths of despairHonestly I think they just didn't want to fuck with the difficulty of the last part in remakes much because of how infamous it is. Getting put through the wringer by the cave to Rhone and beyond is just part of the game. It'd be like Ninja Gaiden not sending you back to 6-1 when you die to the last boss.
>>12821956The thing is I believe modern interviews like this are exagerations of the truth because the customer is always right and because it's from a modern point of view. He knows people complained about Rhone and this is his excuse. This interview is also marketing to sell the new remake. When dealing with devs that have been in the industry for 40 years, you also have to realize that they've most likely developed the same taste as what is standard in modern gaming (or else he'd be disgusted by his job every day), including thinking that JRPG balancing today with the games playing themselves is better than what it was in the 80's. Nobody says to a modern customer "actually the standard for balancing was completely different then", it's not something they understand and it's something they might take the wrong way because it's like being told "players suck now"; instead it's always "you're right, this was Bad Design, but buy this new version, we fixed it!"As I said the game was delayed a month just for balancing, they had an entire month to do this which is a lot. Secondly as I said the US version does rebalance some things and the differences in whole are minimal, the only difference for Rhone is the priest in the monolith reviving allies: on Famicom there were probably a lot of players who when using the warp tile to go back to town to revive allies didn't think to use the Return spell and thought they had to walk all the way back through the Path to Rhone, which is most likely a huge part of why people thought this part was too hard. I've talked to a lot of players throughout the years who even to this day didn't realize using the Return spell to go back to the monolith in Rhone was something you could do for instance after going back to grab another Leaf of the World Tree, now imagine thinking this every time you die. This is the ONE balancing change Rhone got for the US release and it's something that is meaningless if the player isn't retarded.
>>12821956Finally that *he* personally didn't play *through* the entire game doesn't mean that nobody else did, or that the last part wasn't playtested. That not every dev goes "through the entire game" isn't the amazing thing people think it is, it's standard practice, so is using debug features to test certain parts specifically; because key devs like himself would be fixing things based on other testers' feedback.Yes there would also be testers assigned to go through the entire game and restarting over when a new version is made, like they said it was, but thinking that was the entirety of the testing is taking them for retards. Secondly, key devs don't need to test to know that the Gold Batboon has a certain % chance of casting Sacrifice when his HP is low enough, or to know that you're not beating Atlas or Malroth without debuffing their defenses, or that noone is dmging Killing Machines except Midenhall, or even at what lvl you need to be for certain parts etc this is all things key devs know without testing.>Honestly I think they just didn't want to fuck with the difficulty of the last part in remakes much because of how infamous it isAnd this brings me to my last point, which is that those changes in Rhone in versions after US NES don't 'feel' like much to players precisely because there weren't a lot of paramaters they could tinker with *within* Rhone to begin with. The entire design of Rhone (originally) revolved on the fact that the game has reached the limit of what you can do with 8-bit stats, which is for instance why Atlas has such crazy high defense or why Malroth can fully heal, because the game has reached the point where 255 HP isn't enough but they couldn't go beyond; and this is also why a couple of enemies are based on OHKO spells. Without changing the entire game design the only parameters for something like the OHKO spells is reducing the likelyhood of them being used, which isn't something the player is going to 'feel'.
