Why do JRPG translations always seem to have weird and dated pop culture references.
Like referencing Punk'd in Disgaea 2
>>
>>12820427
it wouldn't have been that dated at the time
>>
The translator is either trying to replace a Japanese pop culture reference, or they just don't care about the author's intent in the first place.
>>
>>12820427
It's based and funny
>>
>>12820427
Punk'd was big at the time
>>
>>12820427
Action games do it to. I watched a playthrough of Bad Dudes because it was supposed to show the president at the end but the guy looked nothing like Trump.
>>
>>12820434
It's never a pop culture reference replacement. They always just throw in those stupid jokes because they find them funny.
>>
>>12820427
Because they're failed writers bitter about being stuck "localizing" non-failed writers' work instead of actually creating anything.
This is also why they're so much more active and opinionated on social media than the actual creatives.
>>
>>12820432
lies
>>
one of the reasons you pick AI translated stuff over them and then proceed to laugh at them while they have a huge ass tranny meltdown
>>
Localizers are translating thousands of lines so sometimes they get bored and change a Japanese joke into an American joke. Very few actually go full Working Designs are change serious dialogue across the board into American pop culture references and fart/shit jokes.
>>
>>12820574
They liven them up. 9 times out of 10 it's a completely boring line that means nothing
>>
>>12820574
And you know this how? Retarded weeaboos like you should be culled.
>>
>>12821183
It's probably the greatest sin of translation.
>>12821216
Checked many a line. It is very rare for a pop culture reference to be a swap.

>It's never a pop culture reference replacement.
Except when it is.

Fun fact, Disgaea 2 also parodies Fuji TV with 不死TV (Fushi TV)
>>
>>12820427
>thinks the localizers went and created zombie cameraman and director sprites
Why is OP always retarded?
>>
>>12820427
it's because Japanese scripts are generally so bad that the translators have to get localizers to punch it up and make it into something funny or memorable for the western audience
>>
>>12821560
Why couldn't he say something like "Am I on a prank show?"
>>
>>12820427
Because the Japanese line is probably "Huh, am I on that show where Chibi exposed his ass crack on national TV right after stepping off the plane to Japan?" and that needs to be localized to popular American shows, such as Punk'd
>>
>>12820574
Then make your own translation or learn how to read Japanese and quit being a whiny faggot
>>
>>12821583
Do you think the Japanese developers were big Ashton Kutcher fans?
>>
This won't be a problem anymore when AI translation gets perfected, give it a few more years.
>>
>>12821617
>popular American shows, such as Punk'd
I've never heard of Punk'd, so the joke failed.
>>
>>12821628
Sorry you were a shut-in. Everybody knows Ashton Kutcher.
>>
>>12821603
It doesn't quite capture the feeling of the original line.
Disgaea has a very strong tone and the simplest translation wouldn't always be the best.
The Disgaea translators were infamously incompetent fuckups, but there's nothing wrong with this line in particular IMO.

>fan translator doesn't insert irrelevant pop culture bullshit: impossible challenge
>>
>>12821560
A better suited translation would be "huh? is this a prank show?
>>
>>12821636
I'm sorry you were born retarded (american)
>>
>>12822387
Or just "candid camera", which is a term everyone knows.
>>
>>12821560
Does that really count as pop culture? Prank shows and hidden camera gags are kind of a universal thing. Candid Camera basically invented the format.
>>
>>12822439
>we can't call it a prank show we specifically have to reference this American hidden camera and practical joke reality television series
Huh? You know ドッキリ just means "hidden camera" right? And that it's good to translate concisely?
>>
>>12822303
>You know what this translation of a Japanese game needs? A Shania Twain reference. Yeahhhh, now we're rocking
>>
>>12822521
NTA, but it technically only means "a startle" or "a shock." The prank sense of the word comes from a Candid Camera-inspired show called どっきりカメラ. Now it's a generic term for a hidden camera prank.
>>
>>12822523
Not the first time Shania Twain got added to a localization. To get this monster in Monster Rancher you have to have her album "The Woman in Me". The Japanese version instead uses Ami Suzuki's "Nothing Without You".
>>
>>12821216
>And you know this how?

Working Designs.

>>12821589
>the translators have to get localizers to punch it up and make it into something funny or memorable for the western audience

based on what? there is absolutely nothing to substantiate this except the self-recursive ramblings of those people involved who claim to know why people play games.
>>
>>12822541
Holy shit, that is an obscure bit of trivia. That's at least understandable though, no one in America is gonna have a spare Ami Suzuki CD laying around.
>>
>>12821619
Nah, make better translations, and I won't complain.
>>
>>12822546
Yeah, it's kind of fun seeing how Tecmo had to adjust what discs gave what unique monsters for the English versions in the series. Other than Monster Rancher 4 just literally putting in magazine ad monsters in the game, that was just bad.
