How negatively has the retro gaming scene been effected by the collector culture that has risen since the 2010s? Alternatively, if you think it has been a positive, then why?
>>
I collect PC stuff, it's hardly been impacted.
>>
>>12820627
Shelf collectors only want the stuff go look pretty on their wall, they aren't really participating in the scene outside of the actual collecting communities because they don't play games. But yes it has brought a lot of faggots in despite that. I blame AVGN.
>>
>>12820627
How the fuck is Sonic 2 a hidden gem?
>>
My take is that people complaining retro collections are the people who deserve its consequences.
You absolutely do not need retro hardware to play retro games, there are more accessible and convenient ways to play it, if that's what you want.
If you want to own the hardware rather than play it, then you really have no rights to complain. It's the same as what the collectors are doing, maybe you can't whale just as hard, but it's still the pot calling the kettle black.
>>
>>12820673
It's your fault games like Contra are like 80 dollars cart only now.
>>
>>12820627
Games used to shoot up in price online damn near over night when he made one of these hidden gems videos. I don't know if he still has that level of impact nowadays be he sure as hell did in the mid to late 2010s. Like clockwork.

They didn't really like the idea lol
>>
>>12820627
>How negatively has the retro gaming scene been effected by the collector culture that has risen since the 2010s
Retro gaming used to be a budget alternative to playing modern games. You could walk into any yardsale or thrift shop and buy what would be literally thousands of dollars today with just $20 in hand.
>>
>>12820765
Man, I miss those days. I can remember going to pawn shops and or thrift stores and asking if they had NES games and then looking at me like I was fucking retarded for wanting them at all "Uh maybe?" They'd come back with a box they rummaged from the back. Ok how much? "Uhhh... Hell I don't know.. a dollar a piece?".

Man I miss those days.
>>
>>12820627
There is nothing hidden about S2 it was a pack in game ffs.

Metal Boomer is retarded
>>
>>12820627
The biggest damage was that most finished prototypes were quickly snagged by WATA and never released again.

Thus includes the cancelled English localizations of Taloon's Adventure SNES, Neugier SNES, Dragon Quest games on 16-bit systems, and a bunch of original games including Dragon Hopper.
>>
>>12820731
game sack world tour never
>>
>>12820731
He also wanted his viewers to pay for his basement repairs
>>

I swear I remember Game Sack making fun of him while talking about Metal Head for the 32X but I can't find it

You talked about games being free and never buying games while posting a screenshot of Diablo. Your intent was quite clear.

i could have borrowed diablo from someone and taken the screenshot
i could have gotten the screenshot from google images
>>
>>12820627
I think tv-shows like storage wars and pawn stars have done more damage to the hobby. Now even old grandmas are resellers or scalpers.

Yes, use it to exchange for a copy of the game.
>>
>>12820627
I never paid for games then and I don't intend to start now just because some fat fuck made some video about them.
>>
>>12820627
It's gotten a lot of zoomers to artificially impact the market because they want to LARP and get easy views on youtube by making the 1642168652148965th video about "snoy no longer making discs is bad so i went retro!" but then theyll just go back to modern slop after the ps6 releases or whatever. Its all so fake and gay.
>>
>>12821195
>pirate digital only releases
Absolutely. No different than freeware.
>>
>>12820858
They donated him money for it but he used it for a trip to Japan while his insurance paid for the repairs.

You're paying for the code, chud. Stop Stealing Games.
>>
>>12821361
Put it on a disc and then i will.
>>
>>12821232
Eh, anything to shit on snoy a lil bit more is fine in my eyes, but preferably the shift wouldn't simply be buying up old games as an alternative, but also promotion more new games being developed for older platforms. I'm not particularly a fan of clone hardware, but i can get behind it as an alternative hardware to design games for and allow more people to play them without necessarily needing to track down and original system.
>>
>>12821361
The original people behind it probably aren't getting a cent from current sales.
>>
>>12820645
Either you are retarded, lying, or you only recently got into this.
People are asking hundreds for old parts and actual junk thanks in part to people like LGR and his contemporaries. Some of it is understandable like old Mac stuff, but people wanting more than $20 for an ATi Rage is crazy.
Used to be you could go to an old scrapper or even some kind of yard sale and find entire functional computers once valued at thousands of dollars for peanuts, Acer Aspire for $50 fully functional. Don't even get me started on CRT's and that whole area of autism.
>>

>>12820627
Its youtubers that ruined retro gaming, from the angry nerd guy to whoever the fuck OP is supposed to be. Collectors habe done what they always did for decades, its the aspiring streamers who buy shit just to use as background props while streaming, that is the real cancer.
>>
>>12820903
ACTUALLY I think Diablo 1 was free at some point, not just the shareware but I could of sworn there was an event where you could get the iso or something for free. It was around the time they were giving away C&C etc. Not OP you are both faggots and so is metal pee jizz
>>
>>12820627
I honestly don't mind it because I actually have too many games and am going to be selling them soon. Everything that pricecharts for less than 10 has been sold in a garage sale. A lot of my games go for $50 or more and they are all going on eBay. Will be keeping the stuff that will actually get played but the rest is just collecting dust and I'd rather it go to someone who actually wants it. Me making money is nice but I just want less clutter. I want to get each system I own down to 30 games or less.
>>
>>12821475
Blizzard offered it free for a time on their site but no longer do.

Imagine being that beta faggot who constantly chats up your girl as if he was her girlfriend. Imagine suffering him because your girl doesn't have the heart to tell him "fuck off". Imagine not having the heart to do so either, because he's just that sad and disgustingly subservient. At the same time, you suspect the dude would go insane if you told him to fuck off and will pull a gun on you or your girl. You never know with that type. There's a lot of betas like this, the same kind of "guys" that simp for YouTube females showing up on gaming channels. The same kind that will enter "donating contests" among each other, where the point is being the faggot who donates the biggest sum, as this is meant to show who can "provide the most" and "deserves" the girl to pay him attention. But no, they're just getting a "thank you!" and if they ever start to bitch, they get blocked. It's then that the beta begins his hate crusade against the girl who dared not to love him for a bunch of bucks.
It happens so commonly in that community that I don't watch any YouTubers. Let them rot in their own filth.

>>
>>12820627
There are some positives to this that don’t get brought up much
1. The amount of retro games that were not thrown out because people heard they could be sold is pretty great, most would have just been tossed by now
2. This has caused progression of emulation to quickly increase to meet demand. How long ago was it that there was not even really a decent GameCube emulator?
>>
>>12821571
That's a good point, particularly about how we've gotten more and better emulators due to more people being brought into the scene.

i have gotten games for free legally using ebay's 5 dollar coupon codes that they occasionally give out
>>
i eventually stopped doing it because i couldn't find any more good used games under 5 dollars
>>
>>12820676
There were many others below these, typically in the 30-40 range. The 50$ listing are there but are a bit less common. The first boxed copy I saw was 130$. That's the difference between shelf collectors and ppl who just buy vidya to play them. That's where the real damage has been done. I remember when a boxed contra was like 40-50 bucks.
>>
>>12821709
It was an exaggeration but this game used to be like 5 dollars and that was the point. It's like one of the most common fucking game next to Mario games, everyone had Contra and you were guaranteed to see copies at any flea market or pawn shop. Now it's this.
>>
if you would pay more than 10 dollars for a shitty nes game you are an idiot
>>
99 percent of nes games suck

i like only the rpgs on the system

i collect only rpgs, real time strategy games and 3d platformers
>>
most collectors don't even play most of the games they buy. they just like showing them off as a status symbol like a woman
>>
I love retro gaming!!! But I don't spend on much besides controllers and the occasional stream or gog purchases
>>

>>
>>12821720
Xontra and river xity ransom were consistently higher a few years ago (loose at least). Games with packages are going up, loose games are going down almost universally. A few exceptiona for shit like pokemon and genuinely rare stuff, bit overall we see flatline in pricing since 2020.

Pic related is snapshot from 2020.
>>
>>12821875
Todays price for reference.

Charizard, Blastoise, Squirtle—I don’t know what they are, you don’t know what they are, who gives a fuck.

Cash.

Whole lotta cash.

That I understand.

Some kid walks in here with a little yellow rat on a piece of cardboard, tells me it’s worth twelve hundred dollars. Fine. Twelve hundred dollars. I don’t need the rat’s biography.

Now apparently there’s holographic, reverse holographic, first edition, shadowless—I got three grown men arguing about whether a fuckin’ turtle has the correct copyright date.

Wonderful.

You bring me the cards. I look at the number. I look at the condition. I make an offer.

You don’t like the offer? There’s the door.

You tell me, “Well, on eBay—”

Then go to eBay!

Why the fuck are you standing in my store explaining eBay to me?
>>
>>12820645
>I collect PC stuff, it's hardly been impacted.
An original Adlib Gold sound card costs upwards $3000.
>>
>>12824209
And a soundblaster 16, the workhorse of the dos era and the card that people actually played games on?
>$15-$20.
Done

Again its young retards with money listening to some streamer audiophile who makes a spiel about some meme magic sound chip and retards throw money at it. It doesnt affect gamers at all.

Some stuff is also inexplicably expensive, like 3DFX for collectors but the same game plays as good or better on a late 90s nvidia card. 3DFX was an expensive stopgap add-on product that made a tiny mark in gaming history before becoming obsolete almost overnight, like the sega 32X of PC gaming.
>>
>>12821935
>you shouldn't be buying sealed or cib if you actually want to play the game retard
that was the entire point, how did you misunderstand?
I am saying if you want to buy the game as a gamer, to play it, then loose is best and the prices have flatlined for nearly a decade. Prices are only really goign up for the speculative investors who want graded CIB and shit like that, not gamers who want to actually play the game..
>>
Good: Demand has increased the availability of new parts and products. Flash carts. Modifications that enhance old consoles.

Bad: Invasion of flipper/picker culture. The Heritage Auctions bullshit and the attempts to repeat the "success" of it. The same retarded nonsense where popular games that sold millions of copies like Mario and Pokemon get needlessly marked up because of an agreed upon and increasingly irrational "market value" despite lack of scarcity.

The best time to buy was in the past. It's not coming back so get what you want how you can before it all gets even more retarded. Don't look at the prices for pristine consoles and have a cry about it on the internet. Buy the most busted shit you can find and fix it up into a quality retro piracy machine. That's what I do. Or you can emulate.

Remember bros. Times are tough. Gas price is sky high. Inflation rising. Wages stagnant. It sucks and I'd be lying if I said it had no effect on me. That doesn't mean you need to be personally upset with me for buying a heavily damaged Gameboy Color, an IPS display screen to mod it with, a new case, a new speaker, and new capacitors to put in it for around $100. Yes I know I could get some Chinese emulation handheld for around $20. But I'm not so broke that such a thing is the only way I can experience the games I want to play. There's no need to pocket watch. Let me distract myself from the misery of modern living whichever way I choose to.

Not really bro. Im just saying emulation is actually better. I have more options. I can seemelessly switch between snes, genesis, nes amiga cd32 dos games I mean really what ever I want and I dont have to pay for anything. Nothing i paid 100 dollsrs for the board and like 30 dollars for the console. Ive played all the games I've ever wanted and never once gave some resellers nigger a dime some faggot who runs. It really is crazy tho. I can save any time I feel like. Change the colors aspect ratio type in any cheats I want. Enjoy the game any way I feel like. Its cool cause I actually enjoy playing games

>>12827623
I enjoy playing games too but I care somewhat about authenticity. I'm not 100% strict about it to the point where I'm making comments on YouTube talking about "we do this because we can finally get all those things we saw in the glass cabinets that our moms wouldn't buy for us." But booting up the actual console, holding the actual controller, etc is part of the experience for me and I'm mostly buying consoles that I'm nostalgic about owning in the past. I use flash carts and exploits rather than actually buying games unless there's a good reason to. I bought a Pokemon Pinball cartridge because it just isn't the same thing to me without the rumble feature, which of course I had when I owned the original cartridge as a child. But the vast majority of the GB or GBC library will fit on a single cheap micro sd card and my $25 ez flash junior handles them like a champ. I'm not concerned about graphics upgrades, save scumming, or those other things as much as I am having the real hardware. I'm buying it up now knowing that I'm not getting the best possible deals but it's trending in a worse direction so I'm fucked if I don't. Also buying things in shitty condition makes more sense if you're just going to mod it anyway.
>>
>>12827634
>le 30 year old rotten hardware is part of the experience
mental illness, the other anon is right, you genuinely don't play any games
>>

Well it's fine if you feel that way. I'm not going to argue with you too much about it. I gave my reasons. If you disagree feel free to do something else. I'm not trying to make you jump into the retro repair and modding hobby. I am not in the business and I am not going to get anything from shilling it. Emulate and be happy. I'll play on my original hardware and be happy. You are not a threat to me. I am not a threat to you. What's there to be mad about?

Shelf collector culture, which wasn't a thing until the rise of cunts like this guy in the late 2000s/early 2010s and many others like him (Game Chasers, Pat the NES Cuck, and countless others) virtually all springing up as a result of AVGN becoming so popular, has been disastrous for those who wish to actually buy and play these games. They are the reason games cost so much now and they don't even play them.
>>
>>12827708
I just wanted to point out that your garbage hoarding hobby has nothing to do with games, that's all

It amuses me that the continued existence of this hardware which is the only reason the games meant to be played on it were made in the first place offends some people so much.

From normies faggots who invaded the hobby buying whatever shit he covered in his hidden gems videos. Prices used to go up virtually over night. I am not sure if he has as much influence on prices nowadays but he sure as hell used to.

I seriously cannot comprehend how a fully grown adult man would enjoy playing gameboy shit, emulation or not
>>
>>12827843
That's not the only console I own. But I get it. You can't enjoy something with primitive graphics because you didn't actually grow up in the era in which they were common. If you went back to 1998 your mind would be blown if you visited my childhood bedroom and saw me playing Pokemon on a Gameboy Pocket even though I own a Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, and Sony Playstation with my own TV/VCR combo and one of the earlier models of DVD players from the era in which those were still considered a luxury item. You're constantly lecturing me about how I don't play games when you can't enjoy them at the base level, just enjoying a game for it's gameplay and because it's fun without caring about how primitive it looks. That's why you're so deeply insecure about these things and try to make what a man does with his spare time and spare change some kind of issue of moral turpitude. You're ngmi anon. Your preachy autistic screeching about mass marketed consumer electronics is going to hold you back from happiness.

Want me to translate it to retarded zoomer sharty user speak so your dumbass can understand it? I find it especially hilarious how younger generations are starting to associate coherent text with LLMs.

You have an IQ of 78 and would fail if I challenged you to read a single page of a Harry Potter book. A task that the average American 11 year old without learning disabilities used to be universally capable of. You are dumb as shit.

At this point you're just coping since you're both unable and unwilling to address any of the points I made. You want me to get into a gay little slap fight about emulation versus original hardware. I refused since I think that's a waste of time. Now you're making excuses. In between those posts I actually played a game on an emulator which goes to show I'm not bothered by it.

You can scream "bot bot bot" endlessly into the void like a butthurt Hillary Clinton voter on Twitter in 2017 until the end of your days for all I care. I'll simply disengage.

Yep. I acquired 90% of my retro game collection nearly 20 years ago when I was barely making 30k a year. I’d bring $50 with me to a flea market and easily leave with 20+ quality titles almost every time. No resellers, barely any other collectors, smart phones were barely a thing yet, it was amazing. I make about 150k now annually and there’s no way I could afford a lot of the games I found back then, and pretty much all game hunting is a complete waste of time now.

>look! I spent 20 hours going to garage sales and I found a couple of $30 games for just $10!each! Score!

It’s so fucking sad what’s happened to this hobby.

Yes, they had a massive influence on making the hobby popular and driving prices up, but they’re not solely to blame. People naturally become nostalgic for their childhoods when they reach their mid 20s and it seems to persist into their late 30s and early 40s. They want to recapture that sense of excitement and wonder they had playing something like SM64 or FF7 again so they naturally begin to seek these games out. Many eventually go above and beyond what they played growing up and start looking at other titles they missed out on or never even knew existed. The fact that people in that age group typically have more disposable income than they’ve ever had and sometimes ever will have also allows them to indulge their sentimental game collecting habits. And yeah, along the way many of them go on YouTube to look for recommendations which further fuel demand for games that they might have overlooked initially. This in turn makes these channels more popular, leading to more new channels like them getting created, and more people finding them and getting into collecting. So yeah, YouTubers are a big reason why we’re where we are right now.

Why? Because I wrote a thoughtful paragraph with correct grammar and spelling? Zoomers need to be drafted so we can be done with their retardation.
>>
>>12828037
Who is they? Collectors? So people becoming nostalgic for something and buying it are also collecting it for that purpose so I don't see how you're differentiating between the two you dumb ass faggot bitch

>>
>>12827715
NTA, but you are indeed a retard fag that knows nothing outside of his little individual bubble. Far more knowledgeable and skilled game enjoyers than you have been acquiring original hardware and games for decades before you were born because they actually have a deep interest in the medium beyond save scumming through a game just to mark it off a list.
>>
>>12828037
OP says nothing about YouTubers. It says collector culture and asks of it has negatively or positively effected retro gaming.
>>
>>12827756
Avgn has had that same effect. That shitty playstation E.T. game shot up from worthless to worth something because of the recent video he did on it.
>>
>>12828095
AVGN wasn't making videos listing 10-20 games per video like the others. But if you trace it back he's to blame for all of this because all of those channels started because they were inspired by James and the "retro gaming scene" online largely sprang up due to James in general. Before that it was a niche hobby relegated to places like GameFAQs.
>>
Now /vr/ has successfully drilled into my head which people I should be resentful of. I feel better. What would I do without being told how to navigate my parasocial relationships by some guy on 4chan? You talk about the game now game expensive! Me so mad!
>>
>>12820627
It's a big positive, back when this stuff was worthless people would often just throw it away.

Only people who are mad are the kiddos and people who gave / threw away their classic games and then had to watch video gaming go to hell and want their shit back, maybe. I don't get it really because you can emulate pretty much anything, if you just want the games why not try emulation? Leave the collecting to the big boys.

>>
>>12829423
Where in that post did I simp for him? I think his videos suck and I don't watch them. I just find the specific criticisms being raised in this thread to be somewhat lacking. If it was merely about the quality of the videos and not conspiratorial whining about the price of plastic, the contents of which can easily be pirated, I wouldn't find all of this to be so pathetic.
>>
>>12829427
Literally the entire post and your disingenuous framing of the discussion itt is done to simp for MJR.
>>
>>12829521
Maybe if you repeat that enough times some people will believe it's true. But between me and you only one of us is obsessed with a YouTuber.
>>
>>12829558
What gives you that impression? Do you think the entire thread is one person? The thread isn't even about MJR or YouTube it's about retro game collecting culture and if it's had negative or positive effects on the hobby overall
>>
>>12829564
You're the one who keeps bringing up MJR and accusing me of simping for him. I said his videos suck but you are still continuing in this direction accusing me of belonging to his fan club or some shit. You can pretend otherwise once someone points it out but this person is clearly someone you care very deeply about. Even when the discussion goes in another direction you keep bringing it up.
>>
Hot take: all this whining and crying in the thread isn't from people who are anti-collector. It's from people who didn't get into collecting until it became more popular. They imagine themselves as being in the same position as people who have collected for years and lash out at the most visible personalities out of jealousy. They found out about these games from MJR or Game Sack or one of those other channels like everyone else. They weren't sitting on their want lists for years.
>>
>>12829575
You're referring to him here obviously you disingenuous swine
>>12828576
>>
>>12829602
I was referring to retro gaming YouTubers in general. Not any specific one in particular. I'm glad that it hurt you so deeply when you read into it as a diagnosis of your own parasocial relationship with MJR. Perhaps when this thread is dead and you no longer feel the need to defend your own ego from what you see as an attack upon it you can examine why you feel so strongly about this person you don't even personally know.
>>
>>12827850
gameboy games are literally for children, it has nothing to do with primitive graphics
how the fuck can an adult male enjoy mario and pokemon is beyond me, you were supposed to outgrow them 20 years ago
let me guess, you still watch your childhood cartoons as well
>>
>>12829775
I play whatever I want. Whatever I find fun. You're never going to be able to make me insecure about it. It starts with playing Nintendo makes you childish! Then it moves up to playing video games is childish get a real man's hobby! Then it goes to why aren't you doing this and that instead of what you actually want to do. If I lived my life the way dickheads on 4chan insist I should then I probably wouldn't be very successful. Do what you like and stop worrying about what the next man does unless it's actively harming society and causing problems for others. Live for you.
>>
>>12829782
the very fact that you feel the need to type all that shit screams of insecurity
>>
>>12829787
I'm not the one getting upset about what an employed adult male does in his spare time. I can talk about my hobbies without getting too defensive. I don't need to justify them to you because I don't even know who you are. You're not my friend. You're not my wife.
>>
>>12829791
>I'm not upset
but you are, that's why you keep rambling on
>wife
you don't have a wife, you'll never touch a woman in your life, unless you throw away all that useless garbage
>>
>>12829794
I do have a wife, actually. You desperately need me to be some strawman you made up in your head so you can justify your own preconceptions and the base judgment you made up when you read my posts. I'm trying to show you that's embarrassingly pathetic. I'm not trying to force you to buy a Gameboy and grind through Pokemon games. You can tell me you don't think that's a lot of fun without trying to make it into a status competition you can't win because I refuse the frame. Just because I can write at length doesn't mean I'm somehow angry either. I have my own thoughts and opinions that I didn't get from soijak jpgs.
>>
>>12829807
sure buddy, go play some pokemon with your wife instead of arguing with strangers on 4chan
>>
>>12829810
Let's simplify this since you're not one for long paragraphs. I do what I want because I want to do it. You do what you want because:

Fill in the blank.
>>
>>12829816
what the hell are you talking about bro? I just said that hoarding useless hardware from 30 years old is insanity, and that an adult would never enjoy kiddie games like gameboy cartridges, the same way he would never enjoy cartoons for kids
does your wife know you spend all your money on trash?
>>
>>12829824
You failed to follow a simple instruction. Tell me why you do the things you want to do. Is it because you want to do them? Or do you run through a mental checklist beforehand to question what others will think of you for doing them? Are you living for this group of people who you imagine give a shit about you in your head, or are you living for you?
>>
>>12829827
>no u!!!
I do what I do cause I want to, you do what you do ( insane rambling blog posts on 4chan) to score internet points amongst your autistic peers whom value the rotting garbage you keep "collecting"
>>
>>12829829
You'll forever be a slave to imaginary social judgments. Even when they aren't imaginary it's worthwhile to question their relevance. As I'm doing to your social judgments now.
>>
>>12829834
>being an adult is a social construct
kek, an actual manchild
>>
>>12829834
ok since you're so liberated, I dare you to whip out the gayboy on a date with your wife, see what happens
>>
>>12829835
Where in my post did I say that? You're on one of the manchild strongholds of 4chan. This is our home turf. Rather than saying it's a "social construct" I am saying should I worry about people judging me for it? Should I even care? I don't think so. You seem to be deeply terrified of this ever happening to you. It's funny to think about why that is. I can speculate that it's insecurity or that there was some formative event in your life where you got bullied, or saw someone else getting bullied.
>>
>>12829843
>our
>>>/reddit/
>>
>>12829842
If we're on an actual proper dinner date why would I do something that's obviously socially inappropriate?

>>12829846
You seem to think you're going to make people feel embarrassed about childhood nostalgia and retro gaming on the retro gaming board. I think that's pretty funny.
>>
>>12829847
>obviously socially inappropriate
oh so you DO care about what others think
>>
>>12829858
Why wouldn't I care what my wife thinks? I don't want to disappoint her. Likewise you won't see me go buy one of those huge bluetooth speakers and blast shitty rap music on a crowded train just to annoy people. It's not just about social shame even though I think it's entirely justified in such cases. Why would I want to deliberately cause problems for other people?

Now circling back, you're trying to make collecting retro handhelds into a moral issue somehow. I think that's just silly. There are real problems in this world. It's not worth worrying about that.
>>
>>12829861
so what retro cartoons do you enjoy with your morning milk?
>>
>>12829873
Well when I was a kid I was big into Beavis and Butthead. I was the only kid at my school who was allowed to watch it. The proper retro experience is one of the WOC recordings from MTV you can get on myspleen. I had the Genesis game too but you know how much of a pain in the dick that was. I'd usually just play Road Rash or Sonic 2 instead. I collect the 90s music video blocks too because as a kid in the 90s I preferred watching those instead of most cartoons.

The MetalJesusRocks Effect has been documented to be within 24 to 72 hours of a video's release when collectors flood online marketplaces like eBay and PriceCharting to buy the recommended games but it's been shown to mostly be temporary in most but not all cases. Depends on the print run/availability of whatever games are covered.
