This is one of the best JRPGs I've ever beaten. At no point does it devolve into spamming attack every fight, things constantly happen in combat that require you to rethink your strategy on the fly. It has tons of replay value with different classes, it slowly opens up more as the game goes on, doesn't just dump you into the world too quickly like DQ2. The dungeons are actually well designed and not just a series of intentionally confusing mazes. What a masterpiece, no wonder it's the third best selling Famicom game.
>>12821580Famicom version hopefully? I cn't stand when people act like the original versions are obsolete and you should only play the remakes.
>>12821596>Famicom version hopefully? Hell yes (official NES translation).
>>12821580This is what all qjrpgs should have been, sadly FF ruined them and made movieslop games
>>12821606Based. Now play DQ IV
>>12821580DQ2 doesn't open up until 40% into the game as wellAnyway if you like this you should check out more Famicom RPGs once you're done with DQ4. You'll find to the standard for gameplay balancing used to be much better.
>>12821580>This is one of the best JRPGs I've ever beatenmaybe if you never played anything newer than 80's RPG'sthis slop was completely obsolete the moment the superior SNES remake dropped, which it turn became also obsolete once the definitive version of DQ3 the HD-2D remaster dropped
>>12821743>>>/v/ >>>/vrpg/ >>>/lgbt/
Best part of DQ3 is getting your Pilgrim and Wizard to get all spells, then going to Dharma and having them exchange classes and gear. Who needs a Sage when you already have two magic users with access to every spell? It takes a little while to grind them back up, but they'll still be useful before they hit level 25 again, and almost godlike afterwards. Also lets you choose between having a melee fighter for your 3rd or a sage.I really should play through again, it's been a while.
>>12821801Your party sucks and so does every other DQ3 party. The DQ3 vocations system is awful because there are only 2 vocations that learn meaningful spells, reclassing halfway through the game means you'll lose all the progress towards the spells you didn't learn yet, and reclassing by the end of the game is very grindy and still unrewarding anyway becausePriests into mages is redundant since sages completely trivialize this build.Warriors into martial artists is pointless because they don't carry any spells and the stat cap also make this reclassing pointless.Mages into fighters is just trading a damage dealer for another damage dealer, they do not complement each other.Priests into fighters is the only build that kinda works in clutch situations, it still sucks that they'll be permanently stuck with half of the priest's MP.It's like the whole system was tailored to make reclassing as unrewarding as possible because even though this is a mechanism of the game, the devs really didn't want it to be a core mechanism.
>beat the game 2 years ago>loved it>don't remember anything about a class systemDo I have brain damage? I don't recall it being any different from DQ2...
>>12822201Are you referring to DQ3? Then yes, it did have a class system, and yes, you may have early onset dementia.
>>12821580Totally agree ,play it only 2 years ago and whoa i was impressed even tough i played a tons of J-RPG before thatStill my favorite Dragon quest
>>12822325Put down the bottle and get some sleep
>>12821580I have never touched a dq game, but did just beat chrono trigger. I did like chrono, how do the dq games hold up against it?
>>12822549If you like how well developed and lovable the characters of Chrono Trigger are, then do not bother with Dragon Quest unless it's DQ8 or DQ11.In this aspect Chrono Trigger is much more of a Final Fantasy game than a Dragon Quest game, it only looks like Dragon Quest because of Toriyama.
>>12822551>DQ8 and 11>well developed and lovable chaarctersKEK this faggot can't read and only likes these two overrated turds because of voice acting
>>12821859>completely skips over the class changes I mentionedUh huh. You sound autistic and angry.
>>12821859This post is so fucking stupid I don't even know where to begin
>>12821859Mages are awful damage dealers, you want them for Oomph and Bounce
>>12823051Spells are the only thing in the true game that can hit several targets at once, which make them very great damage dealers. But yes, in the shitty remakes the point of offensive spells is lessened a lot thanks to weapons like the Boomerange/Flail that can hit groups or the entire enemy field, which is one of the reasons why the remakes suck.
>>12823071>boohoo remakesAgain you don't know shit, AoE weapons have always been worse than just having a party of good physical attackers, that's why reclassing mages and priests into warriors and fighters is great.Mage damage spells are only good for the very rare enemy with high def like Army Crabs
>>12822619This retard could not deny the post so he started projecting instead.
>>12822551I thanks for the Intel, I thought chronos characters were fine, wasn't my favorite part in the game. I really enjoyed the the world building. Ice age caste system powered by Satan was my favorite segment as it accurately portrayed my actual beliefs about human history.
>>12823075This is completely wrong, generally speaking if you're facing a group of 4 enemies you can take them out with 2 spells whereas in the best case scenario even if your physical attacker can take them out in 1 hit (which they often do not) it'll take twice as many attacks by comparison. This is why spells matter especially when said enemies group can quickly fuck your shit up if they give them the chance, and this is basic 101 RPG balancing that DQ3 does well. This coupled with your reaction to me critizing the remakes tell me that's what you played>AoE weapons have always been worseThe best weapon in the SNES/GBC remakes is the Flail, it does the most damage out of any weapon AND it affects the entire field. This sort of thing is precisely why the balancing is fucked in those versions as the late game meta went from favorizing a balanced party vs "3 physical attackers + a sage"So here you come with your knowledge from the 'press X to win' versions thinking it applies to the original, which this thread is about, and can't even get that remake knowledge right.
>>12823127>This is completely wrong, generally speaking if you're facing a group of 4 enemies you can take them out with 2 spells whereas in the best case scenario even if your physical attacker can take them out in 1 hit (which they often do not) it'll take twice as many attacks by comparison. >This is why spells matter especially when said enemies group can quickly fuck your shit up if they give them the chanceThat would make sense in something like Wizardry, but this is DQ3 where spells "fail" 50% of the time and do extremely pitiful damage compared to physical on top of being a limited resource. >The best weapon in the SNES/GBC remakes is the Flail, it does the most damage out of any weapon AND it affects the entire field. The Flail was decent but not better than weapons that are single target and do more damage, that's something you give your priest/sage so it can finally do decent damage, even so the boomerangs and whips you cry so much about are shit. And if your post >>12821859 is about the original, then sounds like the original is poorly made and the remakes fixed the class system, making reclassing good on top of enhancing many other things
>>12821580I played and beat the GBC remake (port of the SNES one) and the 3D HD remake (pretty good, I'm grinding like crazy because I want to make a party that has all the skills)A few weeks ago I beat the original DQ4 and now I'm looking forward to play the original DQ3 in the future.
>>12823183>The Flail was decent but not better than weapons that are single target and do more damageThe flail is the strongest weapon of the SNES version, and in the GBC version it's only surpassed by the sword that you get after beating the superboss of the game, by the point that it no longer matters.
>>12821580>At no point does it devolve into spamming attack every fight, things constantly happen in combat that require you to rethink your strategy on the fly.lol. no.
>>12823278Stop playing remakes.
>>12823281I've played the NES version to completion. it's not a thoughtful or strategic game.
>>12823281The warrior spams attack because he can't do anything else. The martial artist spams attack because he can't do anything else. The merchant spams attack because he can't do anything else. The gadabout spams attack because he can't do anything else. The thief spams attack because he can't do anything else. The hero spams attack because his limited MP means his magic is only for clutches.
>>12823324>thiefStop. Playing. Remakes.
>>12823327It won't change any of the other vocations.
The remake (2D-HD remake) actually fixes this.
>>12823329There are four spell casting classes and four attacking classes.
>>12821596>>12821606Glad someone else feels like the SFC/Remake versions feel off in some way
>>12823183That other retarded post wasn't me no>this is DQ3 where spells "fail" 50% of the time and do extremely pitiful damage compared to physical on top of being a limited resource. This is like you're talking about a completely different game; you're also wrong about the Flail as another anon noted
>>12823401>it feels...... offThis is what you say when you can't actually justify your dumb opinion in any meaningful way
>>12823342There is 2 schools of magic
>>12823491Remakes are bad because they miss the forest for the trees. They try to fix up every little piece of the original game one bit at a time, but they miss the wider idea of what the original was going for with any particular idea, so you just get this sense that something is "off" the entire time. This is true even for the very best remakes
