#1 - Iridis Alpha by Jeff Minter of Llamasoft.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34mnRVmM_uo>60hz gameplay absolute tight>moving 2 directions at once on a split screen, which craft you control depends on the dimension you're in (alternate dimensions) and it can switch instantly>speed gets so insane you merely react in your hind brain>if you take too much damage you blow up but you increase power by destroying enemies, and if your power goes too high you overload and blow up so taking damage at times, is absolutely required>can heal by landing and assuming a walking form, also necessary to transfer energy to the planet's core to win when you're nearly overloadedPeople literally play the same cute witch shooter over and over for decades rather than enter the psychedelic and inter-dimensional world of Iridis Alpha. It's baffling. Perhaps the fact that it's non-deterministic and there are no set patterns that frustrate the traditional speed runner weirdos who like shmups? It's a top 10 game for me to this day though.
#2 is easily Gridrunner also by Minter.
No Minter game nor any 8-bit home computer game has any speed running interest which is weird, they hit those tendies super hard and they'll speed run anything made in Japan which has zero randomization.Western games often built in some randomization so there was replay value and you couldn't simply memorize the entire game or record it.What's truly bizarre is that there are zero Japanese speedrunners.
Isn't there a randomized SMB? How do speedrunners deal with that? I don't even hear much about them any more or the scene, did they all... you know... die?
The blinking lights in this will cause weak people to have seizures.
the game has two sub-mini games tooit was kind of a new thing that jeff invented
>>12822306its a masterpiece, and its unlike Minter to have not remade this several times like he does with all his other games.
>>12822306the overload of energy is a great game mechanic, so you deliberately have to go on a suicide run without firing really works well
>>12822926Maybe it was just perfect the first go and he doesn't want to mess with it? He answers his own email, might be something to ask.
>>12822306the Commodore 64 is chock full of great shooters, but for me its Armalytehttps://youtu.be/pXfq5PDt2aE?si=0h6xiSqwr_qVE6bq

Silphexder.
>>12822926I think I know, it was published by Hewson Consultants, the firm Jeff had linked up with which was just some kid and his dad, and they were not good business partners. Finally they split up but IIRC from reading Jeff's book which is free on his site, they got to keep some IPs. He didn't say which ones. But it seems likely Iridis Alpha was one of them.
Hover Bovver!
>>12822312Japanese care about scoring. Speedrunning is a more western phenomenon
>>12822312i know some jap speedrunners in the sm64 community
I think Jeff Minter might have gone a little too far with Iridis Alpha.
R-Type IIIBest soundtrack for a retro shooter
>>12829013dang thats a shame. there is a retro remake of Iridis Alpha that isnt easy to get any more. Google and AI search claim it doesnt even exist
>>12832772the remake is by idigicon and its here:https://archive.org/details/iridisalphaeasily found on Yandex, thus proving that Google is over
>>12832750It also has the coolest intro of any video game ever. I wish someone would make a high quality webm off of it.
>>12834789https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2H4SNzVZ-8You mean the attract mode? I guess...
>>12834804No, like when you actually start a game. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/TrKiXT7Uie8
>>12835330Wait, let me embed it properly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrKiXT7Uie8
>start a practice run>game is muted so I can play background music>pause occasionally to change songs>end up beating the gameDoes it still count
>>12822306 (OP)>60hz gameplay absolute tightMinter's games are meant for 50Hz (PAL), Llamasoft was a British studio.
Did the Wachowski brothers play Gridrunner 2 at one point or am I going insane? The logo looks strikingly similar.
>>12836754I don't see why not unless it bothers YOU specifically.
