What are the worst JRPG translations you've seen?
>>
>>12822743
Bottom one is best. Unironically.
>>
>>12822743
Bottom one is the worst. How do you screw up such basic dialogue?
>>
>>12822743
what the fuck is a "cheese biscuit" whoever the fuck came up with this shit

The entirety of Albert Odyssey for the Saturn. Working Designs pretty much changed all of the non-essential dialogue, and inserted gags into much of the essential storyline dialogue, too. Almost every second NPC dialogue is sexual in nature. No idea how it got a K-A rating. In reality, the original dialogue is probably really boring and generic, so it's probably a positive change and it adds some fun and flavor, but it does leave me wondering what exactly the changes were, and what had been left behind. It's less of a translation, and more of a reinterpretation of the story.
>>
"My fastball gone broke da mouth."
I'd love to see any Japanese that came from.

The bottom one is clearly the best. The point of localizing a game is to present it to a different cultural audience. A literal word for word translation is objectively bad because it doesn't take the ways the different languages are actually used.

And if you don't know what a cheese biscuit is, you probably shouldn't be bothering playing it in English anyway since you're clearly not who it's being translated for.
>>
>>12823035
>Localizations are BETTER than translations!
You're not a good writer, which is why you are re-writing something someone else made instead of writing your own shit. Just translate the work and stop trying to pretend you can write worth a shit. Localizers are just failed writers who can't get anyone to publish the crap they wrote, so they mangle foreign works and call them 'localized' translations.
>>
>>12823035
Redditors are not a cultural audience
>>
>>12822937
You don't want to know. America is the site of worst crimes against culinary arts. In a sane world, there would be death sentences handed down. Second place is shamefully occupied by Br*tish.

You've got 70 year old women over for a holiday?
The party really amps up when you open the oven and whip these bad boys out. If you're feeling really southern you'll dip the cheese biscuit in mashed potatoes dripping with gravy.
>>
>>12823042
I know this is will be shocking to you, but translating something from one culture and language into another so that the ideas and themes still come through is a skill. Anyone can do a direct machine translation word by word, but the result is stilted and loses most of the essence of the original work. That's why there's never just one literal word for word transcription in the world of translating things.

I get you're trying to imply that the only reason I would care about a localization being done well would be because I worked doing them, but it's weak bait. I just like quality.

>>12823047
You're the only one talking about some other website somewhere. Regardless, if the term 'cheese biscuit' is confounding to you then you're clearly ESL so your opinion on how an English translation should go is pretty worthless.
>>
>>12823128
So quality is making a bastadized working design tier mess? Then I'll have no quality thank you
>>
>>12823156
Perfect. Only read things in their original language and be happy then. You are permanently absolved from ever having to think about or criticize any translation ever. You do you. Learn ancient Greek to read Homer and have fun looking down on everyone else.
>>
>>12823161
Or read a version translated by someone that won't add retarded shit
>>
>>12822743
Reminder that people actually defend the bottom and claim the original is too boring or something.
>>
>>12823035
Yes, everyone knows that the extremely common phrase やった is culturally equivalent to "you got served with mashed potatoes and biscuits"

They're fucking delicious, they serve them at Red Lobster. They're called cheddar biscuits. Non Americans wouldn't get it
>>
>>12823268
This, if the original made some Japanese food joke then bottom would have been tolerable but seeing that's not the case, then no, dumb shit
>>
>>12823121
Dumbass jeet
>>
>>12823287
It gives way more personality and charm than "Hooray we did it." "Yeah!". 99% percent of the time if it's not a Working Designs game and you look into a line like this it's replacing some completely flavorless throwaway line
>>
>>12823298
>but it gives more personality!
Who the fuck asked for more personality? Go play some retarded indie game if you want quirk chungus characters, why do GBA Bartz and Cid now have the personality of redditors when they originally didn't?

More personality =/= good
>>
>>12823298
1. It's not your game, it's not your creation, it's not your job to inject personality where you deem it lacking.
2. It's not even funny. If you're going to add jokes everywhere, at least have the courtesy to be funny.
>>

>>12823316
Learn Japanese if it hurts your feelings so much, dumbass weebs
>>
>>12823035
Localization is for adapting cultural references and idioms to an unfamiliar audience. If a script references Issun-Boshi, an American kid isn't gonna know what the hell that is. Localization is also meant to improve readability by cutting down on tautologies and stock phrases. Japanese can sound very repetitive if you translate it clinically with a dictionary. Adapting the yakuwarigo that gives color to dialogue is what localization is for. Not adding your own stand-up routine because you're bored.

tl;dr Richard Honeywood sucks
>>
>>12823409
richard honeywood turned into a supervillain after being forced to translate xenogears solo. from that day forth he cursed the japanese and vowed no JRPG script would go unmolested.
>>
>>12823298
It's not the job of the translator to give someone else's work "more personality"
>>
>>12823505
It detracts nothing from a bullshit line like "We did it!" and only enhances the work. Cope harder.
>>
>>12823505
Localization is not the same as straight translation. This is localization, not translation.
>>
>>12823340
I am, but even if I already knew Japanese as well as a native, I'd still be opposed to trash localization like this because it makes people like you happy, and I don't want people like you to be happy
>>
>>12823507
You can't "enhance" a work that isn't yours, only vandalize it
>>12823514
The person who wrote the dialogue in the OP was hired as a translator
>>
>>12823568
That's what localization is bud cope harder jeet-sama
>>
>>12822743
Worst I've heard of, but not played through is Secret of Mana, which iirc has a massive amount of the text deleted to save ROM space.

In terms of non-RPG translations I think Capcom has a bad history of translating the win quotes of characters in their fighting games. In the Japanese versions the characters have character-specific quotes directed at each other. These are entirely deleted and replaced with 3-4 generic quotes used for every encounter.
>>
>>12822743
Breath of Fire II is really bad and even gives you a lot of flat out incorrect gameplay info.
>>
>>12823507
>and only enhances the work
Personally, I get taken out of a story when a character says something really stupid and unfunny out of nowhere or references The Simpsons or TMNT

Even wackier is that YATTA/YES is displayed after winning battle, so to be consistent, they should have made every battle end in an exclamation about cheese potatoes.

I love chain restaurant references in my media. Every game should be like Yakuza. Just product placement through out the script and game.

But enough about your sexuality.
>>
>>12823639
You act like FF5 is fucking Shakespeare. Both characters are goofy. This fits just fine.
>>
>>12822743
The fact that the bottom translation has become the de facto "official" version for all current and future releases is basically digital vandalism.
>>
>>12823854
It objectively doesn't fit. FF5 has a lighthearted tone and silly moments. They aren't spouting Family Guy cutaway gags in Japanese. It's entirely invented. You know there are proper fan translations, right? You can experience what FF5 is actually like instead of this fake constructed version in your head.

How would you know? Post more examples of the japanese script, not just "yosh" and "yatta".

I blame FF7 and Working Designs. Ted Woolsey's situation was understandable. Working against censorship, short deadlines, cartridge limitations. Also working against the Japanese-specific subtleties. (ie: making Kefka crack jokes and rhymes in English when his og personality is entirely antisocial and selfish) He was praised too hard for getting the US version out the door, and FF4 was blamed too much on its sales numbers.
FF7 was free from Nintendo, cartridges, ESRB E/K-A. They had a chance to get rid of all the fluff for good, but they didn't, and that trend metastasized forever. It was too tempting, after all Barret is a black guy with Mr. T hair and a gatling gun for a hand.
FF7's original translation gets the story correct, the numerous messy bits are all minor. But Barret and Cid were reduced to meme spouters and enough people ate it up that it became a stable for the industry. The Reddit GBA translations are a self-aware post-Woosley woosleyismfest. It wasn't nipped in the bud like it should've.
>>
>>12823705
If you want a truly faithful localization, Cid should raise his arms and say "McDonalds!" to proceed back to the game.

Who cares? Like genuinely who the fuck cares, the story isn't changed because of stuff like this, it's literally taking what would be boring basic dialogue and making it more interesting without changing the core meaning.
Just because you're a sour faggot doesn't mean everyone else has to be a miserable cunt.
>>12823042
There are more than a few examples of localizations being much better than the original, mostly when it comes to TV shows but it also applies to plenty of other media.
