Ideally evil AI? I nominate the Marathon trilogy. Which runs and looks great now on most any computer thanks to a remade engine.

>>12826981I feel all threads talking about artificial intelligence in /vr/ should be considered 'advertisement' and 'flooding', thus, giving ground for janitors to act in. We should be talking about old videogames and not meta/current affairs. But that's just me.Anyways:>Halo series.Cortana being a qt.>Chrono TriggerMachines rule over the wasteland after Lavos chimps out.>Fallout 2You can have a robot companion that is as intelligent as you are in order to pass several Int checks while you put a body together. You transfer an AI into a robot that can have from the brain of an animal (basically a packing mule) to a cyber-enhanced brain (good marksmanship and action points)>Megaman X series and forward.Robots are getting too intelligent and self-aware so they must be put down -- by other robots.>MetalTech: EarthsiegeIntelligent robots are used for war and are so good at it that they turn against humanity as a whole, making them find shelter underground.
>>12827162>I feel all threads talking about artificial intelligence in /vr/ should be considered 'advertisement' and 'flooding', thus, giving ground for janitors to act in.Sounds like a you problem. Stop being a queer.
>>12826981Not retro, shit just came out 6 months ago ffs
>>12826981Is og Marathon any good, i feel like its one of those games were the premise is more interesting than the actual game
>>12827276The first one hasn't aged well but Marathon: Durandal the second game is one of the best retro FPS ever made. Infinity the third in the trilogy is also quite good but Durandal is the gold standard. Highly recommended and you won't miss a lot skipping the first. They are pretty plot heavy but all the exposition is delivered through terminals mostly but in a very cool and unique way you've likely never encountered in others games. Very good writing. Just read a synopsis of the first game and jump into Durandal. If you like retro FPS you won't regret it.
>>12827281>The first one hasn't aged wellhard disagree, it's sparse in its way but it's supposed to be a creepy mystery more than a balls to the wall shooterand you need to play it to appreciate the later games, it's the setpiecewith the modern engine it looks and plays just great
Probably not really retro since it released in 2004, but The Moment Of Silence did a pretty good job at forshadowing all the problems with smartphones, AI and similar shit we have today. It's mediocre gameplay-wise, but the story makes you realize that all the dystopian stuff it mentions is happening today.
>>12827284You can easily just read a synopsis
>>128273092004 is retro.
>>12827319Fuck I'm getting old.
>>12827326It was only 22 years ago pal
>>12827162>the fact that AI happens to be a hot topic now means that any attempt to talk about the probably hundreds of old video games that make reference to the concept are now advertisement and flooding don't you think the fact that you still came up with 5 games makes this take just a little retarded?
>>12827317Much of the game is suspense, you're in this ship and the AI controlling it is well... anyway they tried to use the 3D shoer vehicle for more than 3D shooting, it is still fresh. It's slow though. Sparse even. Enemy AI for that time was excellent, they would sneak up, run away and heal, etc. Even today it would be considered non-yellow-arrow-friendly.
This game gave me nightmares
>>12827276It's pretty good but if you want nonstop action you'll probably dislike it. Story/setting is a big part of the appeal and if you're not interested in reading I don't see why you'd play this. It is a proper scenario though and not just some story thrown on top of an existing game. Original is somewhat basic compared to the other two but still has its own appeal, I could see different people preferring each of the three Marathon games. Enemy placement is worse than the other two. Not so much in a frustrating way just a lot less thought put into it.
>>12826981Desu Sex 1.Chrono Trigger.
The Neuromancer DOS game. Wintermute.
>>12827276Considering that you're playing The Master Chief in a previous life, myeah it is.
>>12827803Marathon takes place two centuries after Halo.
>>12827804Two Centuries, a Universe before.
>>12827860Huh?
>>12827864Marathon. It takes place two centuries ahead, but it's from the previous universe.
>>12827912Proof?
>>12828235Halo is essentially a mirror, a reincarnation, of Marathon
>Look at you hacker...https://youtu.be/5iZMD_eCpEo
"ai computer" boss in gi joethis is the first time i ever remember hearing "ai"
>>12827276The gameplay (mouse aim, third dimension physics, wall climbing/jumping, enemy corralling, etc) is better than any other 2.5D shooter and most 3D shooters in terms of player control
>>12828642oh man i remember this one now lol
>>12827473I played Marathon for the first time on a Mac with a HUGE Apple Two Page Display, the greyscale one, I think 20-22"? It was extremely spooky in greyscale.
The japanese version of Ace Combat 3 has a surprisingly in-depth story that is all about AI. There are english fan translations available for it. It's basically Ghost in the Shell with planes, and the animated FMVs are done by the same team that made GitS. I highly recommend it, it's a great game. Don't bother with the NA version, it cut a shitton of content including the entire story and it's FMVs.
Galerians
>>12828601Halo is in the 26th century and Marathon is in the 28th.
I guess every Terminator game? I never personally played a very good one though
>>12829328so is that why some anons are complaining about how this isn't "retro"well I'm convinced I think we should just talk about Joe & Mac from here on
>>12829362Who said it wasn't retro?
>>12829362Master Chief can't be a reincarnation of the Security Officer because he came before. The Security Officer is a reincarnation of Master Chief.
>>12827281>The first one hasn't aged well>Just read a synopsis of the first game and jump into Durandal.Anon...stopM1 has some of the best and most memorable level design in the series for better or worseand through design even explicitly shows Durnandal's rampancy the door at Blaspheme Quarantine, skipping that does a huge disservice to the players experience of the tone of the series as well as Durandal's characterization.M2 level design is a huge design step down in boldness- it's very open and unrestricted in comparison to the claustrophobic feeling of M1. Not a great start to the series as Infinity blends the two together into the highlight of the trilogy. If you're skipping M1 to just read a synopsis, might as well just skip the entire series.fixed the spoiler
>>12829441It's jank and primitive compared to Durandal and runs in a tiny window. I understand you're a Mac fag but for everyone else there is nothing there a plot synopsis can't cover.
>>12826981
>>12829927There's a modern engine for it if you're superficial like that.
>>12829927>It's jank and primitivenigga this is /vr/, go away
>>12827281Durandal with the unlocked framerate is so good.
>>12826990This is the best suggestion in this thread and no one has said a damn thing. The community here is fucking retarded.
>>12831396It's an edgyfag point and click adventure. No one cares.
>>12826981Metal Gear Solid 2
>>12827276Marathon: Infinity is hard. I beat it but the save points are spaced such that you might potentially be rerunning multiple levels if you die en route to the next save point.
>>12827276The Marathon games are the best boomer shooters. They have the best story, best puzzles, best art design, best weapon sandbox, and best enemy AI.
>>12829927>It's jank and primitive compared to Durandal and runs in a tiny window. If anything the enemy AI is more aggressive and the weapons better balanced in the original. Durandal tones down the hitscanning and promotes circlestrafeslop.
>>12832134play on Major Damage or Total Carnage.
>>12831396Thats like asking what platformers are good and just getting Mario as a response
>>12832146I do on all Marathon games
>>12827517and BASS/Beneath A Steel Sky.just not the non-/vr/ sequel.
>>12832085They were definitely upper tier, but they ran pretty poorly on the macs available when they were released, even the PowerPC based ones that would cost fuck knows how much in 2026 inflation adjusted buckaroos.1995~1996 PC FPSs on 486 DX2/DX4s and then Pentiums blew the Marathon games away in smoothness and movement control/speed if not necessarily physics engine flexibility or game lore lmao.
>>12832085>>12833910yeah, Aleph One makes the games WAY better. go look at any footage of someone actually playing it on a Mac and it's kind of a snore.
>>12833910>even the PowerPC based onesThey ran fine on our Performa from what I remember, well enough to enjoy multiplayer anyway. And I used to play Duke Nukem and Blood at a friend's house, but tbf I don't remember what PC he had just that it was new. Also played Duke on the Mac, but with the "skip odd lines" scanline option to make it smoother.
>>12829238This sounds pretty rad
>>12834250HUD spam, frame line skipping, and tanky controls/narrow FOV were all needed to help hide the shitty perf.Fun games despite all this though.
>>12835475The big HUD in the first Marathon and line skipping option in Duke3D were because of the 640 x 480 resolution.
>>12835475>narrow FOVThere's literally a fish-eye power-up in the game that gives you 180° FOV.
Phantasy Star II, Ayn's story in Phantasy Star III, Chrono Cross, Live-A-Live's sci-fi chapter, Metroid/Super Metroid, Snatcher, Front Mission, Lagrange Point, Xenogears, Silhouette Mirage, technically Wild Arms (the "demons" are created living metal; intelligent, literally artificial and antagonists) and I'm drawing a blank thinking of others. Lots of RPGs.Surprised I can't think of any beat em ups.
>>12831396It used to be a cult classic but it's been posted to death in recent years. There's not really anything more to discuss about it and honestly ihnaims fans should've probably moved on to posting about another game like dark seed or harvester or one or Ellison's other books at this point.
>>12829328Nah, that anon is right. There is shit in Halo that never happened in Marathon, so it's the same universe but in another New Game+ so to speak.
>>12829238This is true, but its also true that the japanese AC3 has comically inferior jet handling/control/physics to the western releases, to the point i found it unenjoyable to play. If there was a way to have the western plane physics in the japan game, that would be goat.
>>12826985>metroid seriesFusion is probably the only retro Metroid with a major AI character, and even then, he's just the guy who points you places.
>>12835475fixed in the modern engine
>>12826981Neuromancer
I had a dream that an anon posted a webm of a shortcut in a fictional level that resembled a combination of Requiem for a Cyborg and Post Naval Trauma with low-oxygen enabled that involved starting on a down-moving elevator with a bunch of vacuum BOBs, letting them exit and then pressing a hidden button to make the elevator reascend. At the top is a set of double doors with a hidden third door between them which allows entry into a narrow ventilation shaft like area, then to a staircase that abruptly ends with a ceiling inches above the top step. If you position yourself just right, you can press use on an invisible switch which causes the entire ceiling to raise a couple inches, as if the security officer himself is physically forcing it up. Press it several more times and there's now enough space to run around above lower hallways that you'd ordinarily have to fight in. One technically challenging grenade hop later and there's access to a secret terminal in which Durandal acknowledges your ability to bypass the mission objective, which was to restock on equipment before being beamed to a new alien planet. However, the secret terminal also mentioned the importance of stocking up on oxygen tanks due to said planet's harsh atmosphere. The alien planet level itself has breathable air, so the terminal was basically a forgotten oversight of a plot line that was changed before release, and it appears like the daytime swamp levels in Marathon Rubicon with tan cracked earth, Pfhor poop liquid, and sprites of what looked like some kind of growing root vegetables. I woke up wanting to thank the anon for posting the webm until I realized it was all fake.
apotheosis x is sweet
>>12841756>dreams about the internet I'm so glad this doesn't happen to me. I'm in my early 40s. I tried using a cellphone once in a dream, to give someone a number and it just doesn't work. The screen was all glitchy and I couldn't read anything. I woke up shortly after.
>>12841786How many games are in that series?
>>12835582>Silhouette MirageEverything in that game is an AI
>>12842079it's a marathon mod but it feels like a standalone game. if the dev had changed the enemy faction to something other than the pfhor it would stand on its own.
I have no mouth and must race.
