I really like using my Wii to emulate old consoles & games (specially NES, GB & Genesis), the Wiimote & the Classic Controller are nice controllers imo.Gamecube compatibility is also really cool.
>>12827610Same, but I use a PS3 with the retroarch port and a retrobit wireless controller
>>12827610Same here, but I use composite out, and blueretro with a modern BT GC controller that has rumble.
>>12827610I use a Wii U myself because I don't have a CRT anymore. It's great having native GCN + Wii + Wii U software in one machine.Wii visuals are fine with evWii and the deflicker filter turned off nowadays, just with a bit of chroma shift. For GameCube, I use the WUP-028 adapter and the official wireless NSO GameCube controller for Switch 2. No additional input lag, which is great. For Wii (and therefore emulation / Virtual Console), I disagree that the Wii Classic Controllers (Pro or regular) are good. They're comfortable controllers for 3D games, but the D-pad registers way too many false diagonals. For 2D, the NES and SNES Classic Controllers (included with the Minis) are FAR better.I also don't notice the mere 1 frame of input lag that vWii is supposed to have over a regular Wii.On the Wii U side of things, Virtual Console games have too much input lag and are unusable for me. Only GBA (M2-developed) and DS (NERD-developed) are fine, but for that I already have a New 3DS XL with native support, so... in the end, it's just a machine for GCN, Wii, and Wii U games (most of which have been ported to Switch anyway, so...).
>>12827610Cool story OP. I've modded a wii and a 3DS and a xbox360 to run emulators and play retro games. I think everyone should do this so older games are more easily accessible for posterity. I use the gamecube controller on my modded wii. Also in case someone doesn't know, you can hold down reser while you power it on so it starts tye homebrew immediately and you don't need the wiimote at all!
>>12827610Same here, but I use PSP connected to a TV
I used to have my Wii be an emulation machine thanks to the Homebrew channel. my PSP was an early model so even SNES emulation was choppy and bad.Xbox and Wii are probably the best emulation stations that aren't a jailbroken PS3/PS4.
I have two emu setups:>PCRetroArchPS2 controller>TVWiiCRT via compositeWii U Pro Controller (it works in every emulator I've tried)I see no reason to use anything but the Wii with my CRT. It's literally perfect for everything up through 4th gen and isn't too bad with N64 and PS1 also.
I have a modded wii myself but i lack a gamecube controller. and i refuse to use the wii remotes the battries run out too fast
Lost interest in Wii emulation and reaffirmed my view in original hardware once I realized how laggy it was.
>>12827859I remove the batteries out of the wiimote once I'm done playing, they last much longer that way, i also use duracell batteries.I was considering buying rechargeable batteries but I'm fine buying a regular pair every now and then.>>12827848I have mine on a CRT with component output, Genesis, GBA and NES look super good on it.I also own an N64 & a PS1 so I don't have to worry much about emulating them.
Configuring wiiflow is a pain in the ass though. Pushing box art with dem wiiflow tools etc.My latest struggle is getting the FB Neo Geo retroarch core to work, getting wiistation to save properly and fixing second controller not working on some emulators
I use the Bliss-Box Gamer-Pro Advanced with the Bridge over the GC ports so I can use the right controller for the right emulator.
Not retro.
>>12828525Emulatating /vr/ games isn't retro now?
>>12828416>wiiflowisnt usb loader gx better for that?
>>12829198idk, heard somewhere that USB Loader GX sometimes freezes and I remember it doing that ~15 years ago so I went with an wiiflow setup
>>12829206I haven't got issues with USB GX Loader at all, for my emulator channels, gc isos and wii games (both wbfs and wiiware shit), that being said I use an SD card, I think I remember hearing that Wiiflow is better for HDDs but that was a long time ago.
>>12828569His computer runs a script that scrapes the board and notifies the bluetooth dildo in his butt to start vibrating anytime someone mentions the wii
>>12829228The main draw of wiiflow for me is cover art for the emulators and also for the media on wiimc (which I haven't been able to boot through wiiflow yet)I want everything easily accessible as this is mainly a setup for my daughter's bedroom coupled with an RGB modded 14" crt
>>12827610Same, but an AW Alpha R2 with a Steam Controller V1
>>12827941Is that VC? I had a worse experience, never that bad, with VC on Wii and only used it occasionally. I emulate on a 360, I found in a dumpster, no problemo. Really I suggest everyone just go dumpster hopping for xboxes, they are unusually common to find, slightly broken, in a dumpster.
>>12827848Not really, it's inaccurate emulation. It doesn't look or feel like original hardware. There's infinitely better ways of emulating out there but they cost more than a wii.
>>12829656By "better ways" do you mean fpga and original hardware or do you think crtemudriver is acceptable? I would like my emulation machine to manage 6th gen
I've both been told and read about how the WII is the ideal emulation platform for generation 3 and 4 on an old CRT for like 10+ years now. But the thing is, I already had a Gamecube and a way to load Swiss. And I could already emulate gen 3 & 4 pretty well even way back then. So I've just kept doing that.I will say that snes9x-gx does really struggle with Star Fox and also Super Diagonal Mario. Otherwise the whole set-up works great paired with a Hori pad or an adapter so I can use an SNES, Genesis 6-button, or Dualshock controller.
Not op, but random wii question pertaining to retro. Are there any softmod hacks for it that installs everything to the systems internal memory, or is a micro sd or usb stick still required to load homebrew?
Can you install the Wii Shop Channel versiond of retro games to the system and load them up like as if you actually bought them?
>>12830756yep they're called WADs.
>>12830756If you mean installing VC wads then yeah you can.
>>12830489I did emudriver with crt switchres for a few years. You can get it to a pretty good point after messing with it a ton but it's not really worth the effort vs other options unless you want to watch too like 480p rips, it's good for that. For just retro, ya it's a rabbit hole and the end result isn't nearly as good as mister. With PCSX2 it was good with emudriver but Dolphin was lacking in many ways. Another decent option for gen 6 is just get a crt monitor and just do normal pc emulation on it. Looks pretty nice although not quite as good as a tv imo. My end destination was to just use mister for anything gen 5 and back and then for gen 6 it's good to just jailbreak the consoles and load them up with roms. Plenty of tutorials online, even AI gives good instructions like 98% of the time for this stuff and it's not very hard and it's not overly expensive. PS2 involves getting hacked memcard, hard drive that goes into the expansion bay and an adapter to hook it to the ps2. For GC I just use wii since its cheaper and easier and it runs GC natively and you can also play wii roms along with GC roms from an sd card. I haven't done Dreamcast or XBox yet but it's all doable for those too if you're into those. I warn you that emudriver ate up probably 2x more of my time tinkering with it and retroarch, than learning + configuring mister AND modding these consoles combined.

I beat Quake on my Wii and it was really fun.I wonder if the other ports of retro fps control just like it.
https://github.com/BenoitAdam/nullDC4WiiAnyone here has tried this?
>>12832679>Significantly reduced input lag by moving input polling to exactly when Snes9x polls (at vblank) instead of after each frameI haven't messed with SNES on the wii for a while but I hope this is true.NES and Genesis feel perfectly fine imo but SNES never felt right, to the point where I'd avoid using it.
>>12827610As someone who actually owns it and plays it and it's NOT AN INDIAN BOT nor Mr.Smith.....lemme tell you.As an emulation machine, the Wii is just mid / average.People really overrated and oversold the emulation capabilities of this thing, I do always wondered how can a console gets programmed to output 240p to maybe hack the Wii U to have more raw power and fix all the emulation issues, but the later literally murders itself for lack of use, so as bad as the Wii can be with the instability brought by hang ups, soft locks and stack dumps, at least you can still use it.
>>12833602Genesis it's perfect, and so it's GBA, PS1 is half way done, PC Engine is pretty good if you use RetroArchh Frankenstein mod, Saturn it's experimental but the fact that SOME games are playable at mostly 60fps (but with audio lag buffers) is a good thing, and you can play the few unique VC games and GCN and Wii, makes it worth it, but GB and GBC is unoptimized, some emulators are outdated and cannot properly scale to SGB framing without fucking up the graphics and scanlines, mGBA does not have separate video set ups for GB and GBC and GBA, EmGBA needs to be edited with augments to display correct CRT scaling but has micro pauses / or minor audio skips which are annoying, MgbaGX turned out to be vibe coded garbitch and it's abandoned, NES while perfect does not benefited from the Wii's ultra clean composite output and makes it look a bit blurry compared to a real NES, same with SNES which has still not perfect, and most other consoles are only feasable via RetroArch Franken.
>>12827610The wii can play ps1 games. 90% of the library work
I like playing NES games with a Wiimote.
>>12827941Never used the classic controller only ever used a gamecube controller when emulating never had this problem
>>12833652I like how the button labels match the SMS controller.
>>12833637It depends, old gfx is for 80% of 2D games, other settings will cause stuttery scrolling or epylptix graphical issues and bad image stretching.OpenGX adds more speed to more demanding games but still not up to date yet cause the Wii is that weak, and De-interlacing doesn't work well anymore.WiiSX allegedly it's faster but they integrated 240p but they fucked up by only making it display right on Component, and those fuckers only release 1 update a year.
>>12833892I forgot which emulator I used but I was able to play metal gear 1 fine. Some funky freezing happened after I defeated mantis but thats the only problem I remember.
Do you think a 2gig SD card is probably large enough to cover a library covering the good stuff from gen 4 and earlier? Ordered a couple of cards that are showing up tomorrow so I can mod my wii, I figure I'll get a second larger card for Wii/Gamecube games.
>>12834110Easily googleable
>>12834114
>>12834110probably yeah, unless you want mame/neogeo.
>>12834076which one, there's only WiiSX (revival) and Wiistation, and at which version? dont tell me you are one of those dummies who only grab v2.4 of the latter, when you need to gather the latest version from gbatemp thread (good luck with the brainrot tough)
>>12827610Yep I do the exact same. Lots of fun was had and more will be had!
Can you use an NVME in a shell with USBLoader-GX or does it have to be a premanufactured external drive in order for it to detect properly? I started with my SD card with older roms for emulation and I want to use something like pic rel for my Wii and Gamecube games but I can't seem to get it to recognize. I used Rufus to format it into MBR FAT32 format and I've tried it with and without 'create extended label and icons' checked but no go either way. Is it because it uses a USB-A to USB-C cable that connects to the drive enclosure?
>>12836252cant you use wii backup manager to format the drive to fat32?
>>12836295I'll try that, but I don't know why it would be any different than using any other format tool with proper options.
>>12836306No dice. I can only assume the problem is with my NVME enclosure or something, I'm gonna have to rummuge for a regular USB drive for comparison.
>>12836390i think this is a power draw problem. The Wii USB ports provide maybe 2.5W max but an nvme can draw 3+W under load. I switched to a SSD in an enclosure (even USB-C) and everything works; it maybe pulls 2W under load.
I use two 64gb sd cards, one for wii games and other for retro roms & gc isos. Not vidya but i was also considering getting another for movies/shows/anime, WiiMC is pretty cool and i kind of want to watch anime on my crt.
>>12833652The silicone jackets that came with the Wii Remotes make it incredibly comfy horizontal (don't know if they were included by default everywhere but it was in the UK). D-pad also feels great for how small it is, especially compared to the Classic Controller/Pro.
>>12836483I just sorted out getting my half terabyte external working so I'm gonna try out WiiMC and see how Riding Bean looks.
>>12836616Well the copy of Riding Bean I have is too large. Same with Desert Rose, but Gunsmith Cats and Dominion Tank Police worked just fine.Anyone have a good config for making stuff that runs well on WiiMC?
>>12827839Yeah the og Xbox is great too. Mine came preloaded with a massive FB Neo romset including the CAVE PGM era shmups.
>>12836770Im using Baseline and Fast conversion speed.Software is Handbrake
>>12833143I'm not the one yelling 'reee not retro!' in every god damn thread.
>>12830594I play Star Fox on SNES9X GX on Wii and I thiiink it runs like on SNES? That is to say, slowly lol. There is a fork called RX that runs it much worse so watch out for that.
>>12830754You still need the SD card. It can be risky to write stuff to the internal memory so homebrew developers avoid doing that afaik.
>>12833630Saturn? Huh wonder if the Megaten games work. Would be cool to play them on my crt.
>>12836483WiiMC is cool, I watched Bebop and BECK on it.
>>12836770Not him but I convert them to AVI files (xvid codec), 720x480 res, 2500kbps bitrate, mp3/aac audio and 128kbps audio, higher bitrate makes the video laggy or have audio delay.
>>12833143Shut the fuck up nigger, the wii runs emulators that play retro games and you crying about it isn't going to do a damn thing.
Next thing I have to figure out is fixing USB Loader GX taking ages (also crashing) while trying to reinitialize my external SSD (NVME in an enclosure). I know part of it is because it's such a large drive (half a TB) but the Loader support guide said not to use drives over 2TB so I thought it would be fine. It also mentioned using partitioning tricks without explaining anything so I tried parting it into three equal volumes in the hope the smaller sized scans would work faster but no dice. Am I going to have to decapitate my drive into a smaller partition or try a flash drive? >>12837325I am him, I was replying to myself.I'll try those settings out.>>12837061and this, but I looked elsewhere than Handbrake because I was surprised it out could only output in MP4/MKV/Webm.
For GameBoy/Color I use the Retroarch Hexaeco build, I haven't used it in a while but I remember getting GB games to look okay and with the dmg shader working

>>12833630There was Mednafen on the Wii but it's been permanently abandoned ND has outdated cores, specially for PC Engine and GBC, and it never saved individual button remappings, regular RetroArch on Wii also has the same problem and it's been reported that more then half the cores are busted, you MUST track down the Frankenstein core over at gbaTemp that allows individual core settings and even then it hasn't been updated in almost 2 years, fuck. You need it to emulate GB/GBC, PCE and CD and CaveStory property, oh and Wonderswan and NeoGeoPocket and the few NeoGeo, Arcade and CPS1/2 games that don't go overboard in size, oh and Mame emulation is mostly based on an ancient version from the 2000s that was never truly updated, shit, Caveman Ninja runs ULTRA SLOW for crying out loud. And for SNES, you are much better off getting a job and saving for a used SNES (DONT DO EBAY, ITS ALL MARK UPS AND BOTTED AUCTIONS NOW), don't pay more the 60 bucks for the console, and save and invest in the FKPAKpro. So yeah, Wii emulatiors are a HUGE mix bag.
>>12841698if this post read like I was an Indian botgot or ESL crap, it's because auto correct kept fucking me up.
>>12837316Tolerable Saturn emulation has barely started, there was an abandoned emulator called Seta-GX that could sorta emulate both VDPs but it was ultra slow and 88% of games would just stack dump.Month ago someone actually picked up the slack with a fork called ZGX which gave it a notorious push tought it removes VDP2 emulation for now to speed things up, mostly to focus on Wii U over locking, but last version made SOME small amount of games to run at pseudo 60fps, but with the catch of constant audio stutter lag buffer due to still needed fps increase over the 60 number to make it run smoother, right now it already has 240p and games like Rayearth and Princess Crown now work, the latter even has its new English translation fully working, but only the latest build has saving working. Also since VDP2 emulation is disabled games like MegaMan 8 and X4 and Rayearth get crippled by it with parts being blocked by solid colors due to lack of transparency emulation, keep in mind that while they started focusing on Wii U over locking, they were able to make around 20 games run at 60fps on Nintendo Wii (tough not solid 60fps either with fluid music playback)
>>12837986The damn problem with HDDs and SDD not working on Wii has to do more with this damn fucking things!
>>12841735I bought a regular SSD and it works fine now, I'm guessing the NVME wanted too much power, idk.Trying to get all this old anime downsized and playing correctly (huge pain in the ass between wrangling Handbrake, MP4 not wanting to use fancy MKV subtitle formats and finding the right kbps so shit doesn't lag in WiiMC, I definitely am going to want a different solution for playing videos on my CRT eventually) and I'm gonna go see if I can find a Wii Classic controller so I can play Super Metroid on something that isn't a wiimote.
>>12841803I use shuttle encoder to convert videos to my Wii, dunno if you can use that.
>>12841824I was using Shuttle but I was getting errors here and there but I may try it again for the next batch, though I think I have this batch of files converted well enough now and I don't want to leave my computer on overnight to encode them all again. On the topic of videogames however, one of the retro game stores in town just bought out the space next to themselves and are combining stores. I bought a third party Gamecube controller there and it feels pretty alright but getting a clean down input for morph ball in Super Metroid feels kinda shitty. I wanted to buy a Wii Classic Pro controller they had but it was tied up in a trade that wasn't completed yet so I'm gonna go back there tomorrow to pick it up.
>>12841984Shuttle has worked fine for me but I have only used on videos without subs files or things like that.I have a normal classic controller, I like it quite a lot for things like Super NES, Gamecube & GBA, I even have used it on my PC for fighting games, it is small and takes some time to get used to its triggers, but I'm very fond of it.Only thing that sucks is no L3/R3.
>>12841803Try a gamecube controller?
>>12842014That's what I'm currently using, >>12841984It's hard to get a clean down input on the dpad with it though. It's good enough for now.My bigger problem is figuring out how to get an arcade stick working so I can play Soul Calibur 2/Deadly Alliance/Tatsunoko VS Capcom. Nintendon't doesn't seem to recognize anything I plug in but supposedly I can make custom configs to get controllers working but I need to find a guide for it.
