Fuck you, I liked it.
Based. If you played the PAL version you did NOT beat the game
Same. So did everyone else I knew. I only found out it had a bad reputation when people online started bashing it. Also, the overworld and boss music are bangers.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNgv8DPFYaMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoDISP18DrU
>>12828683the NA version was the beta release. PAL was the real version. forget beating the game. you did not even play the game.
>>12828691Yoy might as well just play with Gay Genie codes if you can't handle the NA version. The PAL version was cucked for casuals like you.
>>12828683I played both. The burger version honestly feels better balanced aside from the dumb "can't shoot through walls" thing, it actually makes the whip, TNT and missiles useful instead of letting you just easily beat the entire game with just the gun.
>>12828683>>12828706Even the NA version isn't THAT hard, I have no idea how it ended up with this "one of the hardest games ever made" reputation. You get so many bullshit overpowered items it's ridiculous.
>>12828674I'm sure it was fine but I still don't get why they made a game about uncle fester. If the adams family was popular wouldn't you go for a more popular protagonist on that show?
>>12828770The game was originally supposed to let you play as all the members of the family, but scheduling issues forced them to rush it, so Fester ended up being the only playable characters.>If the adams family was popularThey weren't at the time, the game was made because the project lead was a huge fan and really wanted to do an Addams' Family game.
>>12828712>The burger version>just the gun.I meanbro
>>12828843It's the other way around, the PAL version is easy to beat by just shooting everything with the gun, while in the burger version the other weapons have their uses as well.
>>12828856My bad. So eurofags are better at being burgers than united states of i can't breathers themselves
>>12828720It's the fact that when you continue after getting a game over, you get placed all the way back at the beginning of the game is why it got that reputation. Sunsoft's American branch even used that as a selling point when marketing the game.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxlDGdO2m_s
>>12828883That's more of an annoyance than anything.
I played this game a lot when I was quite young. I never knew what I was doing but I had fun. I should check it out again.
>>12828674That spider makes it look like he got shot in the head.
>>12828720If you can't figure out why some semi-obscure retro game has bad reputation, it's 9/10 cases fault of this faggot.
FUCK YOU TOO
>>12828691>PAL was the real versionExplain to me exactly what would be the point of Power Downs if not to let the player adjust which weapon to use when certain upgrades have trouble shooting enemies in tight corridors? Both mechanics were designed together. This is why romhacks that let you shoot through walls also get rid of power downs. That they dumbed down the game for retards who'd rather spam X to win than to think tactically isn't a proof that "it's the real version", it's proof that it's a half version.
>>12828883>Sunsoft's American branch even used that as a selling point when marketing the game. That was standards back then. Challenge was the definition of video games, players wanted hard games and a game being too leniant with regards to continues was often considered bad design. Singleing out Fester's Quest for it is like looking at the tree and missing the whole forest.Besides it's been a long time but IIRC starting from the beginning in Fester's Quest isn't that bad because you retain your progression, areas you beat, and there are shortcuts. It's not like you have to restart the entire game over.
>>12829976The most powerful gun shoots straight, retardbrain. At no point in the game is it ever more beneficial to have a different gun. >romhacks that let you shoot through wallsThe PAL version already does that.
>>12829980>Besides it's been a long time but IIRC starting from the beginning in Fester's Quest isn't that bad because you retain your progression, areas you beat, and there are shortcuts. It's not like you have to restart the entire game over. The only thing you retain are your life bar upgrades and that defeated bosses stay defeated. Beyond that, you go back to the beginning with whatever items you had when you died. There are no shortcuts, so you basically do have to do everything over.
>>12829980>>12830107Also keep in mind that the only way to get more consumables beyond money, keys and bulbs is to restock from the character that originally gives them to you (most of which are located near the start of the game) or by beating a boss, which will max out everything you've been given already. This means that once you're far into the game, you can't really use consumables much because there's no real way to restock.

>>12828674I think if they sorted out the weapons so they'd work in narrow corridors people would have a much better experience with this game. It's almost a bug.
>>12829980I remember playing on emulator and being unable to progress because entering most doors would cause the game to reset. Was this a copy-protection thing?
>>12830350They did. In the PAL version.
>>12830398I ain't playin' no 50Hz game.
>>12830406PAL lines go out at 50 fields per second (since Europe uses a 50 hertz power supply), i.e., 25 alternating lines. PAL televisions produce 25 frames per second that causes motion to be displayed faster. PAL may have fewer frames per second, but it also has more lines than NTSC. PAL television broadcasts have 625 lines of resolution, compared to NTSC's 525. More lines means more visual information, which equals better picture quality and resolution

>>12829976>Explain to me exactly what would be the point of Power Downsthere are countless games that have negative power ups. the mushroom in mario that kills you for example. they fixed the guns not traveling through walls for the pal release. i dont know what to tell you. you are obviously very proud of yourself for beating the na release. congratulations but that doesnt mean it wasnt a bug that was fixed
>>12830461As >>12830104 said, the most powerful gun shoots straight anyway. You don't want to downgrade your gun to something weaker but slightly easier to aim, you want to upgrade it into something stronger AND easier to aim.
>>12828674I think it's alright in spite of its flaws. It's got some strengths.>>12828683Shut up.>>12828720The Japanese game testers allegedly complained to the American branch that the game was too hard, and the lead dev says that it was his first time leading a game and that he made some mistakes, said he realized too late in development that they should really have put in a password system, because they hadn't accounted enough for the fact that they could use debug tools to just start at any stage in the game.Supposedly, this is why they tried to lean into the game as a challenge for the marketing, which I think is actually a half-decent save for being a bit short-sighted.Is it hard overall? Maybe a bit, but it's not too bad.Mainly it's a bit annoying in how it makes you go all the way from the start if you die. You do still get to keep any progress though (defeated bosses, health upgrades), but you gotta grind up for powerups and items aaaall over again, and wander and fight your way back, so it's more that it's unforgiving by forcing you through a fair bit of tedium if you fuck up.There's many MUCH harsher games in that aspects on the NES though, more often than not, game overs means losing all your progress in other action games and starting over everything from scratch, so Fester's Quest actually isn't as harsh as it could be even by the standards of its time.>>12828908Pretty much.>>12829224Give it a roll, played it about year back and I found it fun enough. The music and graphics are both a treat, like you expect with Sunsoft NES titles. Everyone knows about the secret health upgrade in one of the hospitals (at least, that's what me and my brother called them), but there's actually a second one you can find which is much more hidden, you need to try to make it into the big Addam's Family house.
>>12830637>grind up for powerups and items aaaall over againNot really grind, you end up with way more bulbs, money and keys than you need without actively grinding for them, you keep your weapon levels, and the other items are filled up by just visiting the Addams houses along the way. It's really just that it takes like 20 minutes to walk back to where you died because the game is one long linear path.
>>12830637Also>secret health upgradesThe manual more or less tells you where they are.
>>12831015I don't quite agree, last I played and I got to the UFO, I accidentally touched a downgrade, and it made things a chore. I tried grinding for upgrades for 20 minutes, but they just wouldn't goddamn come.Final boss was not fun without a fully upgraded gun.>>12831020I don't know if my manual did. I MIGHT still have it, but it was a localized photocopy (we bought it from a video rental place back in the day). What my memory tells me is that it hints at you that there's one in the first person sections, but it doesn't tell you or hint at you how to find the second one. That's memory though, it's never QUITE as reliable as people think. I actually found the VHS style clamshell cover for it a while back, I should go find it and see if it has the manual in it or not.
>>12831080Would you believe we're actually both correct. The original American manual tells you where to find the first upgrade and incorrectly tells you it increases your life bar from 2 to 4 (probably the original design, they forgot to update the manual when they changed it), while the European manual fixes it to correctly tell you this increases it from 2 to 3, and that a second upgrade can be found in the family's house.
>>12831080Does this happen to be your site then?https://androidarts.com/FQ/fester.htm
>>12831168Nope. Hold on, I forgot to go look for the manual. Mine's not in French.
>>12829907He got really popular before like, good retro game coverage really became a thing, I don't know if that's his fault though his videos were always knowingly hyperbolic, he was never trying to be a sincere critic.
Here we go, it was even cheaper than I remember, they just pasted a photocopy of the instructions on the inside of the cover. We also bought Megaman the same way. Good games. What it says here, incorrectly and in Swedish, is that the secret one in the building upgrades your health from 2 to 4, so presumably this was drawing from the English manual. No mention of the Addams Family house, and it says that there's 7 houses to visit for upgrades, thus excluding it.(Pardon the poor focus, my phone has a dogshit camera, NEVER buy a Motorola, it's so shitty).I don't know if this is copied from a proper localized manual by the Bergsala company who have been Nintendo's local distributor since the beginning, or if this was a separate translation from an imported manual. PROBABLY the former. The cartridge is genuine, and if we ever had any bootlegging going on around these parts, it'd have been Eastern Bloc FamiClone stuff like Dendy and Pegasus that might have potentially filtered over after the Iron Curtain fell.Incidentally, the Megaman cartridge didn't always work entirely right, and I realize now that it may have been damaged by some previous renter before we bought it. No manual scan pasted on the inside of that one though, not sure if it was lost, if they included a separate one, or if it was never there.
>>12831410>What it says here, incorrectly and in Swedish, is that the secret one in the building upgrades your health from 2 to 4, so presumably this was drawing from the English manual. No mention of the Addams Family house, and it says that there's 7 houses to visit for upgrades, thus excluding it.No, the bit about a second upgrade being in the family's house is at the very end of the manual, as one of several bullet point tips
>>12828674https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rio0DbVUFTMI always wonder what is the game developing process for a game like that? Like it barely has to do anything with the actual movie. Was it just a game that was already completed and they decided to toss in some some well known character so Westerners would buy it?
>>12831460The game predates the movie by 2 years, it's based on the 60s live action TV show.
>>12831460Pretty sure this game preceded the movie and was more based on the old TV show. As to why the Addams Family, who knows?
>>12831460>>12831473>Q: The Addams Family seems to have been a fairly quiet property in the late 1980s. Why did Sunsoft option it for a game? Did they get it as a package deal with Platoon?>Robbins: I was a huge Addams Family fan. I called Charles Addams’ widow Lady Colyton literally at a chateau in France and started a dialog. It took many, many expensive long-distance calls and a sort of romancing to convince this regal lady to let us do a game. Lady Colyton kept talking about a movie deal, which I thought was a bunch of baloney at the time. The Japan folks at Sunsoft were extremely skeptical and gave me a real hard time. They really questioned who would care about this really old weird TV show.
>>12831421Oh, that's interesting, that bit IS included. It's worded poorly and incorrectly though, it says to go through a wall for the first one in the building (describing it as "kind of remote"), which is wrong and you don't need to do any of that.It does however correctly state that the second health upgrade is in the Addams House, but the description for going through a wall is absent here, so it doesn't quite tell you how to actually get there.Interesting also that the first mention incorrectly states the first upgrade will upgrade your health from 2 to 4, when the second mention clarifies that they are two separate upgrades.>>12831460It was developed in America and it was apparently nothing of the sort, as long speculated, and this was before the 90s movies, so this was just his weird fucking vision he had for a game, partially based on a dream he once had. Here's an interview with him:https://web.archive.org/web/20190919160231/http://www.kidfenris.com/interview-festers-quest/
>>12831480>They really questioned who would care about this really old weird TV show.Let's be fair, they were right. he overlap between people that remembered the TV show and people that played Nintendo at the time was very small.
>>12831471IIRC they'd rerun really old TV shows as daytime filler on a lot of stations in the U.S back in older days, which is how a lot of old stuff like that kept in the public conscious for extended time. For instance, that's how the original Star-Trek really built a big fanbase, they kept running it on TV over and over, and more and more people kept watching. Other notable stuff is The Andy Griffith Show, Gilligan's Island, Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C., The Beverly Hillbillies, etc.If the 1960s era Addams Family sitcom had been running on TV any during the late 1980s, which is likely, it's possible that this was the one key reason that they decided it was worth pursuing this IP for making this game. Might also be why the lead dev had a dream about it.>>12831504Wouldn't have been the favorite of kids, but it feels likely that the show would have been aired on TV in prior years and that some kids would in fact have seen it.
Any other games James was 'wrong', or too harsh about?
>>12831592I remember him saying that he actually really likes Simon's Quest.
Fuck, kinda wanna play Fester's Quest now, actually.
>>12831620I think the real issue, that was resolved for him in his retrospective, is a fan translation that makes the cryptic-event hunt easier. Meaning it was never an issue of gameplay.Street Fighter 2010 is also pretty fucking fun to nail.
>>12831620He said he liked Zelda 2 IN the fucking video itself and retards still insist "it's shit because James said it was shit".
>>12831660His only con, going by autistic memory, was that it was a bit hard. Which honestly isn't bad at all. My reverse gripe, is faggots hating Castlevania 4 cause it's James's favorite. I think it's a strong contender, even if you prefer Iga-vanias.
>>12831659The only thing the original translation really shat the bed on was translating "hon" as "clues" instead of "books". Those various hints you get about how "clues to Dracula's riddle can be found in x" are telling you what locations to look for hidden books in, which the translation doesn't really suggest.Beyond that, the game's biggest hurdle is that the book telling you how to get under the lake is difficult to find, but that's not unique to the western release. The red crystal puzzle being obtuse is just parroted by retarded fags that never played the game, since the puzzle comes AFTER the blue crystal puzzle that involved doing the exact same thing.
>>12831662The age old dilemma, either you hate Super Castlevania therefore it means you're parroting Egoraptor, or you like Super Castlevania, therefore you're parroting AVGN.There's things to be said for how YouTubers can affect discourse and public perception, but for many people, insinuation that whatever opinion you have is actually copied from someone else is in reality just a convenient and intellectually lazy kneejerk solution towards disagreement.
>>12831734I think it strikes the good sweet spot of SoTN powerfantasy, but OG rules of jumping arcs being committal and sub-weapons still being strong powerups. But yeah, I wish more people saw Egoraptor's gameplay of OoT and Link to the Past. I think him giving retrospective kudos to game design is one thing. But him dictating and making distinctions on what is and not good game design, is the real problem there.James is can admit he can suck, Arin isn't allowed to suck ever. He's just a more goofy DSP sometimes, with some justification to actual shit like S06.
>>12831483I think the funniest part is the devs knew they made the gun fire rate suck ass, and instead of changing that, adding auto fire, or lowering enemy HP, they just said "buy a turbo controller lmao"
>>12831853It's not that bad, you can easily shit up the slimes with the strongest gun.
The only turbo I had back then was the NES Advantage, which I thought looked and felt pretty cool, but aaaah, that rubberdomed stick is just not very good.Kinda works for topdown games like these, but never as good as a D-Pad, and it's a disaster for sidescrollers. So usually, it was the regular gamepad for me.
Aight, I've done a lot of work today, and put a lot of effort into my soup, I'll treat myself to some Fester's Quest while it simmers away gently in the background.
You know, I'm just at the start, but calling Fester's Quest unforgiving was maybe hasty, because you get handed a lot of vital shit very soon. Also, if you use turbo like the manual explicitly recommends, that smooths over a lot. Yeah yeah, YBTG, etc, etc, but I'm not playing this one for bragging rights, just some quick fun.
>>12830104That doesn't mean there can't be moments when taking a power downs is benificial for the moment to come. Also obviously I know the PAL version does that, I'm just pointing out that ROMhacks that go one step further and remove the power downs make sense in its own twisted way because the moment you make guns shoot through walls other mechanics fall apart too.Anyway the main argument as another anon pointed out is that the game precisely has subweapons and items for the player to use when the gun isn't enough. Again making the gun shoot through walls nullifies the point of those. And if you want to talk PAL version, while the reception towards the US's version difficulty was mixed, defenders of the PAL version conveniently forget that the reception of the PAL version's difficulty was also mixed in the opposite way, precisely complaining about the things I'm talking about like "braindead shooting" and "short length">>12830107IIRC there is a shortcut, you don't need to redo building 1. The continue system retains a lot of items/progression then which is a nice middle ground rather than having a back to title screen Game Over, but instead of seeing it that way, people are complaining that there isn't more of it. 1989 was precisely the moment when the standards for continuing in console games was evolving which is where there is this middle ground here.>>12830461>bugfixA balance change is not a bugfix. >you are obviously very proud of yourself for beating the na release.More like PAL version defenders would rather be disingeneous than to admit they like the easier braindead version more
The fruits of my labor.
>>12832283Comf and stew.
I realize it's about time I clean my kitchen, actually, when looking at those pics, it's been a while now.>>12832278>PAL version defendersIt's the version I grew up with, so it's what I know. Maybe if I'll beat it now, I'll give the NSTC version a go later as a hardmode. You'll pry the turbo from my cold dead hands though, my fingers aren't made for that kind of abuse anymore.
>>12830637>Supposedly, this is why they tried to lean into the game as a challenge for the marketing, which I think is actually a half-decent save for being a bit short-sighted.You are misinterpreting this to fit your pre-concieved opinion. Again, "challenge" being used in marketing was common practice back then in the west and especially in the US. "Challenge" was seen as THE definition of video games. Nintendo used it in their slogan, Sega used it in their slogan, Capcom called some of their NES games the "Challenge Series", magazines reviewed and scored games based on 'challenge' (meaning that if games were too easy they would complain and rate them lower), players wanted challenge, and a ton of games used it in their marketing including RPGs etc etc. That Fester's Quest used it too isn't them 'trying to save face because they fucked up', it was standard market practice because it's what most people liked and wanted.>The Japanese game testers allegedly complained to the American branch that the game was too hardThis sounds like bullshit but it would make a lot of sense. What I just said about Challenge was true in the west but not in Japan, because action games wasn't what they played the most. The kind of balance changes the PAL version recieved was precisely the kind of changes Japanese versions of games would get back then (such as the director of Contra Hard Corps admitting they added a lifebar for the Japanese version; or the JPN version of Battletoads). This is just a baseless theory but if someone told me they made those changes for a JPN version that ended up not being released, and then just picked that latest revision for the PAL release 1 year later, I'd believe it.
>>12832292>This sounds like bullshit but it would make a lot of sense.I'm literally just recalling what I read in the interview, you can read it for yourself. Is he completely honest about it? Who knows for sure, that interview was MANY years after the fact, and memory is what it is, he may simply not fully recall how it all truly went. I coulda sworn that the manual copy with my game didn't mention the second health upgrade, but obviously I was dead wrong.I think it's possible that maybe the game was harder during testing and that they may have toned it down some right before release, and the testers complained about that, but that's just me speculating, it's never stated. If you love the game, it's an interesting interview to read:https://web.archive.org/web/20190919160231/http://www.kidfenris.com/interview-festers-quest/I always wondered if the thematically weird nature of the game really was from it being thrown together from leftovers from other games, but no, he says it really wasn't, this was pretty much the game he set out to actually make, and I think that's fantastic and makes it even cooler. You don't get that kind of screwball auteurism with modern mainstream games, and I think he did a pretty damn good job after all considering he was a rookie.
>>12832278>next to impossible bossesThe bosses are some of the easiest parts of the game, what the fuck is that retard on about?
You know, maybe the turbo is a bit much even, because I pretty much just mowed the second boss down while I still had my starting i-frames and he couldn't do shit.Maybe if it fired half as fast, it'd be more fair.>>12832381They aren't terribly hard, though I recall the final boss giving me a tough time even with turbo. The final boss is SUPPOSED to put up a fight though, so that feels proper.
>>12832383The final boss is kinda bullshit in that his attacks are a dick to avoid, but as long as you can make it there with full potions, you can just tank him. Whip the guns in front of the boss itself while spamming missiles and chugging invincibility potions (and using a health potion whenever your life bar is reduced to 1) and he'll die before you run out.
>>12832389Feels like the romhack which would actually be warranted is a combo type, and which offers a hard mode.Easymode is PAL rules, your projectiles go through walls, and you have a really fast turbo fire by default. Then normal mode is NTSC rules, no shooting through walls, you can have a turbo but it's nowhere as fast, it's only there as carpal tunnel mercy. What'd then be good for making a hard mode for this game? Just make enemies and bosses faster and more aggressive? Maybe make some of the more dangerous enemies more likely to spawn? Not refilling all your stuff after beating a boss I feel would also be good for making a hard mode.
>>12832381Bosses were given less HP in the PAL version
>>12832405I'll believe that, though with such blistering turbo it feels like it'd only delay the inevitable slightly.
>>12832405They're easy as shit in the burger version too. More HP makes no difference when their attacks are so easy to avoid.
>>12832416I just did the fourth boss in a few seconds, I don't see him having twice the HP or whatever making a significant difference. I have not died once, and I'm genuinely not that good at NES games. Not getting to have i-frames at the start of the bossfights is definitely something hard mode should have.
Ok, anon is 300% correct, the game really IS braindead easy in the PAL version. The turbo certainly helped me out, but the manual does encourage its use and the game still gives you SO much goddamn help anyway, like free refills after every boss, and free i-frames at the start of every boss battle.I want to stress, I'm generally not that good at NES action games, yet it was a cakewalk for me. That says a lot to me. Still had a bit of fun.I was wrong to call the game unforgiving at all, because at least in this guise, it just isn't. Tired as hell now after all that cooking though, so I'll sleep, but maybe I'll give the NTSC version a try later just as a comparison. Also, maybe I'll finally use an NES emulator that isn't from the 2000s, so that I can maybe adjust the turbo rate to be less cheap.Anyway, if any of you've never had a good goulash soup before, try it out sometime (like a home cooked or restaurant one), I think there's none more delicious.
>>12832303>https://web.archive.org/web/20190919160231/http://www.kidfenris.com/interview-festers-quest/What I take from this interview is that having Japanese testers for an US release is dumb, and you can see the difference in his interview between having Japanese testers complaining that the game is too hard, and him saying that marketing the game as being a hard game helped sell it (although saying that it was marketed as "one of the hardest video games ever" is an exageration, the marketing's angle towards difficulty was pretty standard). As a random example check out the nintendo power issue from september/october 1989 which covered Fester's Quest:https://archive.org/details/nintendo-power-complete/Nintendo%20Power%20Issue%20008%20%28September-October%201989%29.pdfYou have: players corner with players talking about their proud achievements of beating hard games. Then an ad for Super Off Road that says that the game is not easy. Then an ad for River City Ransom that calls it "the roughest, toughest [...] brawler ever!". Then the Sky Shark section claims the game is "a challenge even for experienced aces!". This was just standard then, the examples are countless. Also regarding the interview, that he was not involved in the changes made for the PAL version.
>>12832423Even without turbo, the fourth boss I'm pretty sure you can beat by just standing in front of him and button mashing while using a potion whenever you're down to 1 hp.
>>12832493I remember our local video game magazine called the Neo Geo a console for "people with more money than brains" because most of its games had infinite continues and thus didn't give you your money's worth of challenge.
>>12832710I'd love to see that if you still have it. People these days can't comprehend that infinite continues could ever have been considered a bad thing so more examples is always good.
>>12832710That's so weird, I would be under the impression that cutting the quarter eating middle-man for the home experience, was nearly half the allure of home-consoles at the time.
>>12832710>because most of its games had infinite continues and thus didn't give you your money's worth of challenge.sounds like a schizo invention and most likely it was called that by the magazine because the console was way too expensive.
>>12832760I should have it somewhere, but it's in Norwegian, so you probably wouldn't be able to read it.
>>12832760>>12832797Found it, from the letter column.>Q: You mentioned SNK's Neo Geo in issue 4/92, but you didn't mention that it's twice as good as Super NES. Why not? - Patrik & Kristian>A: What should you consider when judging how good a console is? Should you just look at the graphics and sound? Or should you take challenge and price into consideration as well? We think the latter. The games for the Neo Geo often cost three times as much as the games for the SNES. Are they three times as good? We don't think so. Most games for the Neo Geo have infinite continues when you play them at home. Does continuing from where you were every time you die provide a good challenge? We don't think so. Neo Geo is probably nice for spoiled rich people. We prefer to stick to what's best, and what we think gives the most challenge for your money.>Caption: Neo Geo - for people with more money than brains
>>12832841So it's a Nintendo magazine? Anyway nice example either way
>>12832845>So it's a Nintendo magazine?Yeah, at the time. They went multi format when the PSX released.
i have no idea how anyone would have the patience to play through this. i ran thru it with save states a few years back simply because it was an oddity from my childhood that i played a few times. to me the most frustrating things were some of the boss fights. you have barely any time to experiment and even see what you are supposed to do before dying. and youre expected to just play thru the entire game again so you can get killed in 5 seconds looking for where you are supposed to stand. hats off to people beating it legit but it is not nearly fun enough for me to do that

>>12832892It's actually pretty easy.
>>12829976I would have really liked it if there was an easy mode that was the PAL version and Normal mode that was the NA version. Kinda like Megaman did.
Ok.
>>12828674Me too, bro.
>>12831592Mischief Makers was in one of the openings and he got a lot of complaints even though it wasn't featured in any videos
>>12828674>"It's good if you know what you're doing">knowing what you're doing means grinding for 30 minutes at the start
>>12838073You don't have to grind very much at all.
>>12828674The 'troidvania killer they said
>>12838073>>12838581It's really just "walk up and down the street at the very start until you get the level 8 gun" at the beginning of the game and then "grind on slimes in the sewer until you get the level 4 whip" once you get the whip.Yeah, it's not amazing design, but it's not the worst thing in the world. Just take it slow and avoid downgrades.
>>12828686Never realized how good the music in that is thanks anon!
>>12840382Give it a run, it's worth trying. If anything it's short and not very hard. If you want it REALLY easy, do the PAL version.
>>12831410Hitler dood wat nou
Playing the NTSC version now, and it's maybe a little harder, but not like, shitloads.>>12829976>Explain to me exactly what would be the point of Power Downs if not to let the player adjust which weapon to use when certain upgrades have trouble shooting enemies in tight corridors?Honestly? I don't think the gun downgrades existing is meaningful for this at all.All of the weapons besides maybe the basic short yellow shot one will get blocked by walls if you're at not quite the right angle, and the spawn rates of upgrades vs downgrades just aren't common enough for this to allow for any ready adjusting for selecting weapons for the player to make much sense. You don't have to grind for long to get a good gun at the start, maybe 8 minutes at most, but if you wanted to try to swap to another weapon in the heat of battle, that entails backtracking to go grind somewhere, which is an annoying and situational time commitment that may not even pay off meaningfully.Your shots being awkwardly intercepted by walls is a pretty annoying design choice, and while I think being able to shoot through all walls clearly is a bad overcorrection which instead makes the game easier than it needs to be, usually the problem of your gun being blocked can be solved by repositioning. That's annoying and clunky IMO, but it largely solves the issue for the moment.
>>12828683I don't find the changes in the NTSC version to be monumental so far. PAL is easier, but NTSC is honestly easy already.NTSC still gives you Potions and Invisibility Potions, and refills them for you after every boss battle. If you needed to deal with tough enemies in one of the rare instances they're a problem, then you get plenty of Missiles and Nooses for that (and again, they get free refills). This game being regarded as hard I feel is honestly in error.
That's NTSC as well. It's a bit harder, but I don't feel it's harder enough to be a big deal, Fester's Quest is actually not a very tough game.Still had fun with it though.
Some neat unused stuff in this game.
It's a shame this metal looking dude wasn't used.
>>12831410>I don't know if this is copied from a proper localized manual by the Bergsala company who have been Nintendo's local distributor since the beginning, or if this was a separate translation from an imported manual. PROBABLY the former.Researching the Yapon brand, it seems they were working pretty closely together with Nintendo's Bergsala company and had sole rights for renting out Nintendo games in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland, so the manual scans would likely come directly from them.Yapon would provide basically whatever retailer (usually video rental places) with Nintendo games with these clamshells, along with rental consoles too, and apparently this was quite lucrative for them. Presumably the games would be released for outright sale once they got old, which was probably where we got our examples.
>>12829907He has never been nearly as popular as his fans think.
>>12840734Yep. Unfortunately they eventually stopped with the manual scans and just included the manual in the box instead, where it lasted a week before getting stolen by some asshole.
>>12841138Maybe that's why my Megaman one had no manual?
