What was it like to be around the 80s and 90s as all the classics were coming out in real time?
We watched Sailor Moon for the cute girls, but risked being called gay if people knew.
>>12831193If you were good looking you could get away with it. I even befriended some qts at school thanks to Sailor Moon, made out with one of them.
>>12831193>haha this fag like cute girls, what a queer
The thing about eople who were kids in the 80s and 90s are in a very unique spot between two different worlds. If you grew up in that time you probably heard your parents or your grandparents say the same thing over and over. They would look at your room with cable television and video games and movies on VHS and say if I had that when I was a kid I would have never gotten bored. For them childhood was mostly books and maybe some comic books and a music record and a radio show. So when they looked at an 80s or 90s childhood they saw it with a kind of sweet envy. They saw more color and more fun and more options. They thought you were lucky. That feeling is completely gone now and it is actually reversed. When someone who grew up in the 80s/90s looks at childhood today there is no envy at all. There is nothing that kids today have that we wish we had. We already had television and games and movies and music. What kids have now is just more of everything but in an overloaded way.Now childhood comes with socialnetworks and constant notifications and the pressure to be online and to be seen. It comes with a lot of anxiety that simply did not exist before. Growing up without all of that was not a disadvantage. It was a gift.So it flipped. The older generations looked at us and thought we had it better. We look at kids now and we think we had it better.
>>12831189>classics were coming out in real time?Pic unrelated? We had no way of playing it when new, other than randomly taking a chance on an 8000 yen import (plus $30 shipping) from the black and white clasified ads in the back of EGM magazine.Unless you hung oit in chinatown with access to cheap bootlegs a lot of super famicom games were never really played in the west until well into the emulator era in the early 2000s.
>>12831225That's just a licensed sailor moon game, the classic is sailor moon as a franchise. But yes it was possible to get sailor moon video games back then through bootleg carts. I had the Sega beat em up and the Super NES fighting super S game back in the mid 90s.
>>12831189Licensed shovelware isn't a classic, anon.
>>12831189>Slop Moon>classicmaybe for little girls and queersno straight guy watched this garbage, there was cases of boys watching girly shows like Powerpuff Girls but not this garbage
>>12831239Read >>12831229>>12831242holy projection
>>12831225Anime license games were the most popular imports for a reason. People knew what they were getting, they weren't taking a blind chance. Picrel is clearly a Sailor Moon game.
Also unlike with western licensed stuff, japanese licensed games were mostly decent. There are exceptions, but especially during 4th gen, licensed anime games were generally good, quality dropped on 5th gen I guess due to developers not being comfortable with the new hardware and paradigms, but at least in 4th gen if you get some anime licensed game there's not big chances it's total kuso. The game in the OP is a cute puzzler, nothing bad or offensive about it. Good for playing with your gf.
>>12831245>t. queer
>>12831248>Picrel is clearly a Sailor Moon game.you don't say!
>>12831189Sucked. Adults just molested whoever they wanted back then and never got caught. If you tried to expose them the police would just put words in your mouth about Satan which would discredit your whole story and turn it into a Satanic Panic "false memory" "hysteria" thing. Video games were the only form of escape for kids during this dark time
>>12831267>Adults just molested whoever they wanted back thenSo just like today? Also, funny you call them "Adults"
>>12831193>sneaking downstairs at 6.30am to watch Sailor Moon when it first aired on terrestrial>quickly turning it over to early morning golf highlights if my Dad heard and came downstairs too>accidently convinced Dad I was into golf>pretended to be pleased when he gave me golf lessons as a present>6 months of golf lessons, just to hide my Sailor Mars habit>still quite good at golf>still suspect he knew what I was actually watching, and signed me up for golf for a laugh
>>12831196before my balls dropped the girls on the playground wanted me to be tuxedo mask and it wasn't until i was an adult and watched the anime that i realized what they were getting ati could have probably lost my virginity at 10 or something if i watched the show and understood what was happening
>>12831338>meanwhile, me>Dad: Are you watching this because it's fun or because the girls are hot?>Me: Uh, both I guess?>Dad: Good boy.I never got why American parents apparently thought their sons were gay for watching shows with sexy girls in them.
>>12831369This. The girls in Sailor Moon were basically naked too when transforming, that was a big deal to me as a kid.The show was also good on top of that, I got into the story and characters. Had to learn what the deal with the Moonlight Knight was.
>>12831357That's exactly how I befriended them, I played Tuxedo Mask.Good times, thanks Sailor Moon
Sailor Moon is basically a MOTW sentai show with Shoujo protagonists, it's pretty damn good and the first season's finale will forever be one of the most memorable moments on TV for me as a kid
>>12831189Yes, let me tell you. We would go on youtube and watch our favorite influencers talk about them and why we should buy them.
>>12831189Otaku!
>>12831448kek basedunc no cap unrizzled
>>12831450otakuposter!
>>12831239Sailor Moon had a decent selection of games, most of them were pretty good. The Super Famicom had 2 beat em ups,a fighting game,a jrpg and puzzle game which is a lot of variety for a single franchise. The only really bad Sailor Moon game was the one on the Playstation/Saturn, that one was actually trash
>>12831543The first Game Boy one is pretty ass.
>>12831543I liked the RPG and the fighting games. Not going to say they were great and I've only played the fighting games single player, but I had a good time with them all.As far as Super Famicom anime RPGs I've played go:Slayers > Sailor Moon > Ranma > Tenchi > Magic Knight Rayearth
>>12831225>We had no way of playing it when new, other than randomly taking a chance on an 8000 yen import (plus $30 shipping) from the black and white clasified ads in the back of EGM magazine. Did your local game store just suck? Going to trade in Gameboy games and getting taught about removing the plastic tabs from a snes to play imports was the shit that made it feel like an actual "community" back in the day
>>12831543There should it been a Famicom game as well.
>>12832114There's a Mega Drive game as well and I think there was a Sailor Moon arcade game
>>12831248>Anime license games were the most popular imports for a reasonBullshit. Fighting games were. Some fighting games happened to be based on anime though, and most of those were dogshit bandai/banpresto shitshows. Anime video game adaptation were notoriously among the worst games ever made, consistently as bad or worse than their American movie game counterparts. Only a handful were passable, usually as fighting games, but even then a lot of those were shovelware that were made just because studios demanded a game for each of their bigger series as part of merchandising deals.
>>12832120>Anime video game adaptation were notoriously among the worst games ever made, consistently as bad or worse than their American movie game counterparts.LMAO no.Compared to amerijank/bonjank, bandai/banpresto are god tier. Your meme about banpresto being "the LJN of japan" will NEVER work
>>12831193Never cared because it always was nonsense>Wanting to watch show with hot girls in sailor outfits with mini skirts.>Finding these girls hot is gay... somehow
It was awesome. Maybe you can look through the archive and read the last time some faggot made this same exact thread and live vicariously through our experiences because you're a fucking loser that has nothing better to do.

>>12832668>>12833030There hasn't been a thread discussing Sailor Moon games on this board in a long time, what are you two going on about?
>>12832668>>12833030>>12833074They are train the ai or grift threads. Through, you make the idea (lie) real by responding to the fake premise. The trolling has done damage to everything related intentionally.

>>12831369American culture is completely insane in many ways, and that is one of them
>>12831229First Sailor Moon snes beat em up got a local release in FranceSome Dragon Ball and Saint Seiya games too, since these shows were on tv and very popular with kids
>>12831189There were no Sailor Moon games released in the West. A great deal of games called "classics" now we couldn't play until ZSNES and Nesticle were things.I wanted fucking Rondo of Blood on TurboCD in 1993 but I couldn't play it until 1999.
>>12833339Which Sailor Moon episodes would you recommend? Which is your favorite arc?
>>12833069They should use the Shatterhand Engine and made one for 1993 that covers the first series.
>>12833574Remember when Super Butoden 2 would gotten an American release based on the September 96 release of DBZ in the US and the previous 1995 DB dub they released, and it was planned to be released in Mexico as well?Well BanDai also wanted to release the first Sailor moon game as well, but sadly both US localizations were cancelled and those were 1993 games to begin with, release 3 years late, doesn't make any sense.Instead they made Power Rangers Zeo Battle Racers
>>12833610no I actually don't remember any of that because I would have been fucking excited to see previews for anime games being released in EGM or GameProFor some reason a Ranma 1/2 fighting game got released Stateside and I thought that was a girls anime at the time, I wondered who the fuck was buying it>>12833426islamic countries are not western
>>12833574I got picrel back in 1996 at my local vidya store. Don't underestimate old school piracy
>>12831189It sucked honestly. Waited almost 6 years for a fan emulator translation of Seiken Densetsu 3.....
>>12833752Kids today are lucky, all japanese games are getting translated all of a sudden
>>12833593>Which is your favorite arc?Classic for the origin, S for the tone.
I just thought it was going to keep getting better and better. Then the 2010s came around and everything went to shit
>>12833593Just start at the beginning and watch everything in order. It's all good.
i am a millennial and i only started playing video games sometime in the early 2000s
>>12831338Lol, have your golf skills helped your career or anything?
>>12831189My dad was raping me in my sleep so it was pretty awful
>>12833426Never seen the PAL label for this game. Do you have the box by any chance?
>>12831189it was great and i have been reliving this period in time in my mind ad nauseam. i wish some new games could come along that were any good. the nostalgia just doesn't hit the way it used to. existence is fucking crap.
I had to record sailor moon cause it was on when we were on our way to school. It was a nice little treat for surviving the day. As far as video games, definitely didn’t appreciate it at the time. I had a good record with the snes, played all the classics. Thought it would keep going on. But I was a kid and couldn’t predict private equity and how the hd development cycle would kill off mid budget games.
>>12833574>There were no Sailor Moon games released in the West. Carrying imports/bootdiscs/etc was one of the main ways independant game stores competed in the market back in the day.
>>12835513>As far as video games, definitely didn’t appreciate it at the time. I had a good record with the snes, played all the classics. Thought it would keep going on. But I was a kid and couldn’t predict private equity and how the hd development cycle would kill off mid budget games. It's especially sad to realize this
>>12831189I wasn't aware that games "came out"I wouldn't realize whether a game I was playing was from last week or 10 years ago. I think the first time I became aware of upcoming releases was when they announced the gamecube.
>>12831193I actually watched it *in spite* of the all-female cast. No homo.
>>12836401This too. We don’t even know in retrospect when a lot of games actually came out. I also only had money after my birthday or Christmas. So I’d read Nintendo power and then when I had money every six months when I had money I’d just grab what I remembered looking fun. Other than super Metroid, and yoshis island, which i rented, I feel like owned and played every snes game released in America that went on to be well regarded.
>>12835625If you live in an area with a huge chinese population, sure. The chinese kid in my highschool (we had exectly one asian kid) had a VCD player and pirated the fuck out of shit and thought we were weird for still using VCRs. He also had bootleg famicom and super famicom games. His family would travel back to hong kong for chinese new year and he said street vendors sold VCD discs and games for next to nothing (he didnt do much anime, mosly early jet Li and other martial arts films), plus all his bootleg games. It would be years later in the DVD era that they at least pretended to crack down on piracy, but it was in their blood. So midwest, good luck finding them without knowing a connected asian kid. But california with fuckhuge china towns, the vootlegs spread to all the ither smaller game shops just for them to survive as you said.
>>12838410The short skirts were super interesting for viewers of a certain age.
>>12839295>If you live in an area with a huge chinese populationMy childhood gamestore was in a "mall" made from a converted country airport in a semi rural community of scots-irish catholics. They carried import titles. You are just ignorant and probably bought all your games at kb toys or some shit.
>>12834973This pretty much.>1980s:>Wow, this NES thing is awesome, way better than the 2600!>Holy shit, computers at home!>VHS makes it so I can record TV or copy movies to watch later, fucking awesome!>Arcade games just keep getting better!>Special effects in movies look more and more realistic every year!>1990s:>Woah, 16-bit and 32-bit consoles are incredible!>Holy shit, 3D and FMV, everything's looking amazing!>CDs allow for games to be fuck-heug now!>Arcades have 4-6-8 player games more, and lots of unique experience games like Prop Cycle and Time Crisis!>X-Band and that Sega network brings internet multiplayer to console gaming, and the big companies are thinking about including internet built-in to the next generation of consoles!>2000s:>console devs who previously did half-assed PC ports start blaming the half-assery on pirates and say they are going to stop trying on PC>consoles start becoming more PC-like, including patching games with updates>DRM goes so far it enters the realm of criminal behavior, leading to lawsuits>steam comes out and devs rush onto the platform, beginning the era of always-online DRM phone-ins and removing the right of resell from gamers>arcades rapidly die off in popularity as the majority turn to online multiplayer instead, arcade profits die with them, leading to the death of arcade machine maintenance at most arcades, cementing the death spiral as less and less games remain functional>movies abandon traditional effects and use CGI for everything>DVD ripping isn't as easy as pressing record, they actually designed it to prevent specifically that, because fuck your legal right to make a personal copy of the media you buyThe 2000's were a real shock after 20 years of constant improvements, upgrades, and increasing benefits for the average gamer. We went from a never-ending geyser of awesome games and new genres, to a monkey's paw nightmare where everything gained suddenly had a terrible cost.
>>12839392>You are just ignorant and probably bought all your games at kb toys or some shit.I lived in three different cities in late 80s and 90s, and bought my first car in 93 so I got around. I have never seen a game store like you are descrcribing that carried import anime games in the 16 bit era. Decades later those stores emerged, but not the mid 90s.The only non-chinese import game I saw in the wild was the bootleg mario 3 carts circulating a year before real mario 3 dropped (it was in a grey NES cart but the sticker showed the famicom cover). The demand was so high, one of the specialty game shops had 3 copies of it for rent. The shop that had the mario 3 bootlegs went on to rent saturn and even 3DO titles for a while, but even they never touched 16 bit era imports of anime games. That would just be weird as most anime besides sailor moon and pizza cats wasnt even on tv yet, and stuff like ranma was available for rent but an extreme niche audience (and they even localized one of the ranma games for SNES but it was underwhelming and sold like shit).
>>12839305Completely lost on me.
>>12833776Yeah, but none of them the old ones we missed out on in our youth.
>>12839468>because fuck your legal right to make a personal copy of the media you buyThat one's actually understandable due to its sheer abusability. Because, y'know, piracy?
