Has the original Final Fantasy for Nes aged well? im interested in playing this version i have never played a Jrpg on the Nes before is this game still good?
play the better jrpg
>play the be-ACKKKKK!!
it's full of bugs and while it isn't the worst translation on NES modern ones are a lot betterplay the PSX version or an NES romhack that fixes bugs. pixel remastered is good but it changes the gameplay to be like an SNES final fantasy in some ways and makes the game a lot easier
>>12834334This.
>>12834257>aged wellKek it wasn't even that good back in the day. it's a poorly coded game riddled with glitches. The battle system is poorly designed.Feel free to try if you have the patience, but if you want an actually fun RPG on the NES you're better off playing Metal Max.
>>12834391contrarian bullshiteven as a bugged rush job the game was still groundbreaking for being one of the first 40 hour games to hit mainstream instead of relying on bullshit challenges and continues and lives
>>12834391I'm crine bro did OP dirty like dat
>>12834257>NOOOO DON'T PLAY THE ORIGINAL VERSION! NASIR IS A HACK FRAUD OF A PROGRAMMER AND IT'S LITERALLY UNPLAYABLE
>>12834436more contrarian bullshitnazir did a good job with the graphics programming pushing the limits of the NES, but all the pointer bugs like the critical hits going off the weapon index and spells failing to scale off INT fuck the balance in a way that skews it towards fighters and when you fix all the bugs, fighters are still overpowered anywayit's pretty clear you don't like this series and are giving him bad advice so he doesn't like it either
>>12834257Played it this year after funny enough playing Phantasy Star 1I think the original NES is worth playing, but truly realize you're gonna be in the long haul. People who say that game takes 10-15 hours to beat must be spamming emulator speeds or Isle of Power, because one of the reasons I loved it but also a drawback is it's very much a game where "you go into a dungeon for a bit, explore, go back to town, back to dungeon, explore, back to town". The limited pool for spells, while super useful, means you can pop really decent stuff at a very limited rate and need to kind of spread it around. Equipment is vastly important as well, it truly makes a big difference so sometimes you need to grind (or more often than not get a few good items from a dungeon)When the map fully opens up I suggest either a guide or taking some extensive notes. Did Warrior, Monk, Red Mage, White Mage. Red Mage is quite useful in the original NES version due to spells being locked at certain damage or healing rates, plus being able to tank hits better than Monk or any of the Mages.
>>12834517if you choose to play the NES version with no bugfixes, realize that it came with a huge mechanics guide, so save this file and consult it as you need to but realize that half the magic spells don't fucking work unless they have obvious effects
>>12834542augh, i didn't look at what i downloaded before i posted itdoes anyone have a high res version of this? if not, just go to gamefaqs man
>>12834375I just didn't have patience anymore for the NES original last time I tried it. I made it to the poison cave and just gave up and started playing the Pixel Remaster version instead. I'm personally fine with the easier experience.Old JRPGs are just tedious grinding sometimes and it's okay to wanna speed up and simplify the process somewhat. I might have had more patience for these kind of games when I was 8 and had all summer off to play them but now I'd rather just have a quicker and simpler time getting through them
>>12834653the marsh cave requires preparation to infiltrate, you need to go to the dwarf cave and do a lot of grindinglast time i played pixel remastered on 0.5/0.5 boost it took 2 trips to beat because i ran out of consumables and spells and made it back to elfheim with only one person alive, but i didn't get game overedi think the psx version is the best personally because you can disable life in combat and reenable ineffective attacks. i think removing ineffective attacks was a huge mistake because that's what's responsible for the brainless mash a gameplay that happens when you get overleveled
>>12834257Play the pixel remasterT. Have played the original no hacks no nothing and it sucked cocker spaniels
>>12834334>game offers all of the drawbacks to having fixed characters with none of the complexity
>>12834257>agedThis word should be an automatic ban
>>12834257It's jank, if you want a JRPG Final Fantasy experience on NES play Final Fantasy 3 with translation patch. It's one of the best of the entire series and the patch is excellent. I think theres two different ones, the Neil Corlett one is what you want.
>>12834670Pixel Remaster is dog shit. Wonderswan Color version or the GBA versions are best. GBA adds new content too.
>>12835075>the Neil Corlett one is what you want.kekno, you want ChaosRush. His FFII/III is basically GBA/DS script-port to the Famicom versions, factoring and retranslating the numerous differences the originals had with the remakes. Playing other fan translations will kind of screw you over when you talk to other fans since there's no shared lingo experience.
>>12835089Neil Corlett one is the ancient one and that's the one I played. Booting up a version that has a different text crawl st the beginning throws me off. Can't do it. Never played the DS version it's gay bobblehead shit. But FF3 with that patch has a special place for me, probably my favorite JRPG ever.
>>12834257The only thing you need to know are the few spells and stats that don't work. Once you figure out what to avoid, the game doesn't feel dated at all.
>>12834460>spells failing to scale off INTnot a bug, just a design flaw>>12834375>play the PSX versionThis is what I usually recommend. There's some downgrades, the overworld isn't as soulful despite the higher resolution. The music is pretty good for the most part but sometimes feels a little generic. The Pixel Remaster doesn't improve on either of these aspects. The bugs in the original are annoying, but largely overrated as far as their detrimental impact to the gameplay. This is usually a sign of a shitposter who hasn't even played the original and maybe not even played any version. A far more noticeable issue with the NES game is the UI itself-- the shopping subsystem is a particularly egregious example. You want to stock up on PURE for the marsh cave? Have fun menuing through to buy one bottle at a time, over and over again. The slow screen drawing often makes the game feel sluggish. The text messages in combat are either so slow they bog down the game or so fast they're hard to read. Damage numbers don't appear next to the units taking the damage, either.People who have actually played the game know that these are the more annoying issues. Yeah sure, TMPR is great, sucks that it's broken in the original but that alone wouldn't make or break the decision.>>12835020I think board quality would improve if we banned the people who are too stupid to understand metaphorical language, like you. Having autism is no excuse.
>>12835127No, board quality would improve if we banned all retro haters, of which 100% of the "aged" word users are. I'm fucking sick of subhumans making threads about how much they dislike playing original games of versions. Fuck you and fuck your mother too.
>>12834257>im interested in playing this versionwhy should anything else matter? stupid question from stupider people.
>>12835101>>12835089I really liked the other one that LiThL uncovered while back that added a functional run button. I asked him about it once and he said he had no involvement with it, just found it languishing in obscurity in a GameFAQS link. (Also told me a RHDN admin rewrote half the description he made for it, which made it seem more dated than it was and rubbed him the wrong way.) "ad0220" might not even be the author handle, it's just what was used as the tripod url. Only downside, the names can be a bit too literal.
>>12834257I think you should play it and I think you will like it. Its a wonderful adventure. If you do like it there is a lot more to look forward to out there.
>>12835132It's fair to acknowledge certain mechanics that may feel clunky or cumbersome though to someone playing an older game for the very first time. There are far more gaming options available now than when these games were originally released and it's completely acceptable to critique elements of these games that are not particularly fun or user friendly compared to similar games that arrived later on
>>12835132You're a fucking poseur who doesn't care about games either, just being a retro identy faggot.>of which 100% of the "aged" word users areNo it's not. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. Meanwhile trolls just try to kill discussion every time regardless, because you think it's funny to bitch about the commonly-used term with contextually obvious meaning. Some 80s games play really well. Some just really fucking don't. A lot are in-between and Final Fantasy 1 for NES is one of those in-between games unless you think buying potions from that retarded shop interface is "soulful." Anyone with half a brain admits it's fucking jank.In 1989, when there were hardly any RPGs and almost none with a better UI than Final Fantasy, then sure it was fine. If you really only care about the "authentic" experience then go for it. But the FF1 shop and equipment interfaces were hasty, "best-effort-given-limitations" attempts to adapt D&D to a console game. But they are bad. You can debate about whether automatically missing because your target died is fair/balanced but the UI is just archaic and miserable by modern standards.
>>12835132sorry that i actually beat the game on the original hardware and i tried to recommend a better versionromhacks are still retro
>>12835180Interesting, this wasn't documented until recently and just released to a GameFAQs board years ago? Is it a full new translation AND a run button? That's crazy that something of that caliber was never known about in current scene until now. Neat.
>>12835228>unless you think buying potions from that retarded shop interface is "soulful." But it is. So whats the problem? Originals are always going to be superior to remakes in this regard.
>>12835303The ad0220 version was uploaded to Romhacking.net over a decade after it was made and virtually no one knew about it, and it allegedly started development before the common Corlett version was published. The translation work is overall better and less compact due to expanded ROM size which also allowed the author to add more flourishes like the dash than the other translations don't have.https://www.romhacking.net/games/127/ (under "Fully Playable" last updated in 2005)
>>12835325Very interesting. I might give it a go.. what is this business with the literal names thing? Can you give some examples?
>>12834670Is the psx dawn of souls game the same as GBA?
OP, the game is fine. Every semi-popular NES game is going to be accessible enough for you to just try it yourself and see how it is. This one is fine. You asked your question in the wrong place and have already received a bunch of misinformation about bugs - ignore it. The game is accessible enough; it's clunky and will feel old and may drive you to grind for gold and XP more than you'd like to, but it's fine. You very likely will not notice a single bug unless you look up what the bugs are. Play it for a while and if you hate it then quit. Don't switch to any later port or remake of it; just quit. This is the game and if you don't like it you don't like it.>>12835228The potion-buying interface was bad then. I was there and I knew it was bad and actively disliked it even though I loved this game. It is still bad now. Nothing has changed. You are not smart enough to justify writing such long posts, and the hyperbolic anon you are replying to is more correct than you are. Grow up.
>>12834334It is better, yes>>12834257Aged fine, if you dont mind 8 bit. I suggest the PSX version. If you prefer 8-bit, use the restore rom hack to fix all the bugs.
>>12835347Here's an example from one of the sample pics (don't mind the DS party names, no default was added, Lithl just used that when uploading it). Kurokotta is a direct romanization of Crocotta, which is rendered right in other translations.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CrocottaSo the upside is that textboxes fit more of the translation and there are tiny extras, downside is that individual names don't have the same research and it works on less emulators.
>>12835352>The potion-buying interface was bad then. I was there and I knew it was bad and actively disliked it even though I loved this game.Yes. The NES FF1 UI is dated. It has aged poorly. You have the option to play versions of the game that don't have this awkward and annoying interface. The PSX version is mostly better.> You are not smart enough to justify writing such long postsAnd yet, you're the one pointlessly spewing word salad merely to avoid the succinct and accurate term "dated" to describe the FF1 UI.> and the hyperbolic anon you are replying to is more correct than you are.No, he is more wrong and you are a faggot. It's far more common for trolls to bitch about people using the terms "aged" and "dated" than it is to have reasonable discussions about the quality of old design ideas.
>>12834375>>12834257The best official version to play "overall" is either WSC or PS1 (something about the later versions feels too normie) but I still prefer the charming NES look. Even the popular conservative bugfixes hack introduces new bugs (check the reviews). But if you don't mind delving into unofficial versions: https://rengames.us/ffr.htmlFinal Fantasy Renaissance is the way to go. The draw is ostensibly the remix mode, but the classic mode is pretty much the baseline fixed game.Download: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/18USQPVo1DUVY_d3GgAahQyHh9xVzsSDE
I actually played through it for the first time many years ago with the WSC version and translation patch, this was prior to the GBA version being released which I also bought later on. I just could never get into the NES version, too jank. Playing through the WSC version on my computer though was fun. Good times.
Final Fantasy didn't exist before VII.
>>12835127>spells failing to scale off INTThat came from folling AD&D too literally. while STR and DEX affect combat rolls, the INT stat in 1st edition really did nothing in combat. It was a roleplaying stat, and was used to learn the spells in the first place. I played D&D in the 80s and we never once consulted the "chance to know spell" INT table. Final fantasy captured this useless stat perfectly.
>>12835564It's also worth noting that magic scaling was not a global standards at that point. I think Wizardry did it to some little extent; but for instance Dragon Quest series had fixed magic damage and as a result most JRPG did the same thing. And what you said about AD&D also applies to games based on AD&D Those romhacks that scale magic with INT are simply modern misinterpretation.
