How?! HOW?!

Once you play some 5th gen games you will realize most of a game's size is wasted on useless shit like voice acting and fmv cutscenes
>>
>>12834817
>code written in assembly
>256x244 resolution
>pixel art graphics
>standardized map tiles and charsets
>chiptune music

the real question is: why are games so bloated nowadays?

graphix compressions and not-MIDI music?
Star Glider was more technically impression IMO.
>>12834819
true. but CD medium also made devs get lazy with music and sound effects. they just throw uncompressed CDA into games. 1 hr of uncompressed music can quickly fill up a 700MB CD.
>>
>>12834831
>why are games so bloated nowadays?
not /vr/ but....
almost the same as what >>12834819 said.
but now add uncompressed pixel art and tiles. and code written in Java or Rust, with few hundred MBs worth of code libs included, which is not really as bad as all the uncompressed graphics they throw into games thesedays.
>>
>>12834852
nowadays, the large filesize is mostly do to graphics libraries and other middleware that games are built on top of

High resolution assets and uncompressed audio, it's not rocket science. Modern systems are powerful enough to use them at the cost of storage space.

wait what, there is another remake? i thought only psp remake existed... why
>>
>>12835012
Í think it's essentially just the psp version reskinned, that's what the parappa release was.
>>
>>12835026
That looks like your typical fifth gen racer #59992
>>
>>12835028
Except that's running in 480i at solid 60fps, unlike your typical fifth gen racer #59992

Yeah whatever, arcades got raped and gaped by home consoles o algo

to put it another way: shit no one cares about
>>
I hate sharing games I like with retards mindbroken by Nintendo like 12835026, no wonder arcades died when you have scum like that anon.
>>
>>12835021
It's not. The PS4 remake is basically just the PS1 version with new graphics and some minor changes. The PSP remake is way more different.
>>
>>12834994

cost of more RAM and faster CPUs, and faster GPUs. the costs add up just because modern devs are dumb and lazy.

for me its Gran Turismo 1 on ePSXe, because it just werked.... still overheats my GPU if i get the settings "wrong" and change my power options.

>comparing arcades to home consoles
That is no different than comparing single screen black background 1985 NES launch titles to space harrier (an arcade board considerably more powerful than the NEO GEO, and was only decently ported on the sega saturn a decade later). Arcades were 1-2 gens ahead of consoles, and often it was arcade hardware that would steer upcoming console development for a reason.

One of the biggest things to know about PC gaming is thermals. Most gaming PCs you can adjust the case fans in the BIOS (either steady-state or a curve set to temp).
And more importantly, the GPU fan(s). It's up to you to watch that shit and set the fan speed so your GPU will last a decade instead of 2 years.
If you have one of those CPU integrated "GPUs", set your case fans in the BIOS to higher speeds before you game.
You'll destroy a laptop gaming on stock fan speeds. Even on macs you can usually download tools to up your fan speed.

Even more to your point, is that people actually cared about the 80s arcade games and how they looked and played. Games like Space Harrier and Road Blasters felt like the real deal while you could play a weak imitation of it at home. By the mid-90s arcades were a novelty other than fighting games. You could play Ridge Racer at home all day long. No quarters to feed, no waiting your turn, no sharing the controls with random greasy-handed strangers or germ-factory kids. Slightly better sound and screen resolution with the same or sometimes even inferior gameplay, wasn't worth the tradeoff. And RPGs weren't even on the table to play in the arcades.

>>12834817
Imagine if they optimized modern games just as vigorously. I bet they could shrink them to a fraction of their size.
>>
>>12838598
storage size optimization in the past wasn't a best practice, it was mandatory for creating a game as important as anything else. devs are never going to push as far when they don't have the same incentive.
>>
>>12835819
nope. i tried a couple of progs and checked my BIOS. no way to set the fan speeds in my toaster laptop.

IIRC the PSP version was just a port, while the PS4 version was not just a port or remaster but a full-on remake similar to the recent Mario RPG remake.
