The real explanation is that you are in a segment of the level with springs and curved walls, like a pinball, and the correct way to get through it is to let Sonic flow with the spring swing.If you touch buttons on the controller after Sonic launches from the spring, you will lose trajectory. All you have to do is let it go and let the movement do it automarically, just "cope" with it.It's a bit abstract and maybe not the usual way the word is used, but I think it's obvious enough.

It was an early ARG.You had to figure out a 1-800 phone number from the game's manual, it was pretty easy. There was a substitution cypher where each letter had, I forgot how you figured it out, page numbers in a magazine? Basically you had to figure out that this was the clue and dial in the numbers C-O-P-E corresponded to with the cypher.You'd be treated with the sounds of some SOA interns pretending to be Luigi shoving "whipped cream" down Mario's throat as he resists comically. Pretty revolutionary.
