When talking to another person do you refer to the first Doom game as Doom 1 or just Doom?
It's Doom, just like there is no PS1 (there is a PS One though but that's not what people mean when they say PS1), and whatever you do, when something gets a remake/reboot of the same name, NEVER put the date next to the original game's tilte. It's not "Doom (1993)", it's "Doom" and "Doom (2016)", having your release date hanging out like a sticky turd that won't come out is a fate that should be reserved to remakes/reboots.

Doom, with its episode and missions structure and its lack of a super shotgun and its lack of arachnotron/mancubus/pain elemental/revenant/archville/chaingunner, is different enough of an experience that it should be specified as "Doom 1."

Either "DꝎM 1" or "the original DꝎM".Whenever I say DꝎM most people automatically think of 2016."Classic DꝎM" is too broad a term. It could be anything from DꝎM 1 to FiNAL DꝎM, the fan wads and even 64. Not to mention that 1, not counting E4 and Si6iL, is the game I revisit the least since it looks more like a prototype for everything that came after.
