How the fuck do you use ts?

I wanted to give old school arcade games a chance but why is it so needlessly complicated?
>>

play MUGEN instead? might not count as real /vr/.

How can you claim that when you don't even know how it works?
MAME emulates pretty much everything, including devices without CPUs or screens and even then it's much more user friendly now than it used to be.

If you're just interested in arcade games, grab Final Burn NEO or Retroarch instead.
>>
>>12839605
Use Final Burn Neo for everything it supports, and Arcade64 for everything it doesn't.
>>
I have a few rule of thumbs when emulating arcade.
This kind of emulation has edge cases here and there that can make the experience really miserable to some, while others don't even notice any problems.

1. Don't rename your games, the filename is relevant for the emulation
2. If the game is for Naomi or Atomiswave, use Flycast instead of MAME (this is a must)
3. If the game is for Neo Geo or CPS, you can use FBNeo instead (optional, MAME also works)
4. Some games, such as Killer Instinct, require an additional CHD file that isn't always provided, this caused me a lot of pain
5. If you're on RetroArch, try disabling the rewind feature if you're having performance issues

Mame also doesn't have a great integration with RetroArch (reason to use FBNeo when possible).
The MAME menu is not integrated with the RetroArch menu, you'll need to activate it via TAB and F2, and you can't have RetroArch hotkeys binds on these or else it won't work.

download non-merged final burn Neo roms for the games you want to play
>>
>>12839605
If you already have a few games in your mind, then get a portable version for every one of them. If you want a romset, then I strongly advise you to get a curated one, because if not you're going to end with tons of useless stuff like slots and non working roms.

>>12839621
Final burn neo works so well.
>>
>>12839605
You will need BIOS files, you can download a pack for finalburn or MAME from archive.org
Make sure they are recent, so you can actually use them with whatever version of MAME you're running. Finalburn Neo is less strict about ROM versions and works with most games.
>>
Easiest way is probably to just use Fightcade. It takes care of most of the BS for you.
>>
>>12839605
It's not complicated, you just don't know how to use a computer.

mame4droid > mame
>>
Look for "merged roms" apparently works for some, while if you find a MAME pack anywhere it can have several different games with the emulator and should work fine that way
>>
if you have to ask use fightcade, its only downside is the lack of western support.
>>
>>12839605
What device?

I use Mame4droid and it's easy to set up. The ROM packs are readily available from the usual sources.

Holy hell this board is insanely brown now

>messing around with cheats
>see Prop Cycle has an Infinite Time cheat
>promptly boot that shit up and turn it on
>enjoy flying around and exploring every inch of the worlds in-game instead of having to rush to the next balloon and only seeing a small part of the worlds
>childhood dream fulfilled

So you need to use the right roms and bios files with the right version of MAME because it's a constant work in progress. Every "rom" for MAME actually includes more than just game data, it also includes data which would be handled on the hardware end if this was a console emulator. So you can see why using really old roms with the latest version of MAME might create problems.
With arcade games you're talking about hundreds of different kinds of hardware. Most emulators only handle one. So MAME is a wee bit complicated for that reason.

I like this kind of thing.

What are your favorite arcade games vr?
>>

what?
>>
>>12841648
how stupid, these games are like 40 years old
>>
>>12840981
Aye. Even 20 years ago we knew that if we couldn't work an emulator, we could either git gud or just wait 6 months for the tranny autists to code an upgrade.
>>
>>12841883
Metal Slug probably.
But alas, most arcade games doesn't hit the same way playing at home, I wish I could co-op with a bunch of strangers.

Also, Mushihimesama but no Dodonpachi?
>>
>>12839605
you have to have the right roms otherwise it doesn't work
they have to be the filename too

i remember playing people on the internet using kaillera
>>

the right filenames*

Dumping the roms from an arcade board is not easy feat, and most of the time they have to be redumped because testers find out that they aren't a 1:1 copy. Some boards even have weird copy protections that even veteran electronic engineers have a hard time bypassing them, like that Gaelco suicide chip that it took +20 years to be beaten.

Someone give me a qrd on how to play old (early pre-nes era) arcade games in MAME with least effort possible
