I see these sometimes listed alongside shumps and run and guns but view them as more their own thing. I love these, what are your guy's favorites? Some of mine:>Gauntlet>Alien Syndrome>Pocky and Rocky >Granada>Twinkle Tale>Dungeon Explorer >Shock Troopers>Loaded
Dark Adventure, but specifically the JP(Majū no Ōkoku) or EU(Devil World) releases of it, not the US original.US original was cool and all, but the JP/EU release change it over to be a merger of Gauntlet gameplay and the power-up system from Gradius. They cut out the 3rd character, but the power-up system is cool as shit when slapped on top of Gauntlet's gameplay. US original is just standard top-down run'n'gun action, but with the later versions you can keep something in reserve for when you need it, adding a little bit of flexibility.JP/EU versions also cut it down from 40 levels to 19 with boss battles, and add in multiple endings instead of the one ending you could earn in the US original. They also remove the ability to add lives during a level by putting in more credits, so the game didn't encourage credit feeding anymore.
>>12839843Thanks, hadn't heard of tbis one before
snk made games like this for nes, all of them similar. ikari warriors, ikari warriors 2, guerilla war, iron tank. guerilla war is pretty good. there's also the top down part in super c. need a name for this genre.

>>12839796https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MG1FRBvbtOENot scrolling but Gain Ground is an underrated and obscure title.
Thunder Zone(JP & World)/Desert Assault(US) by Data East. US and World versions have a bit of extra content, but the increased enemy and boss HP, among other things, makes it more balanced towards multiplayer. If you're playing solo, it's best to stick with the JP version.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE6uko2imYw
>>12847346Thanks, this is another one I wasn't familar.Okay I have a confession, while I love these games I have always avoided both Smash TV and Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Smash TV because it always sounded like it was purely designed to eat quarters and Zombie Ate My Neighbors as I feel like I always see people say it's good but goes on for too long and generally not worth beating. What are your guy's thoughts on these two?
>>12840369SAR: Search and Rescue is another great pre-Neo Geo SNK top-down shooter. I played the absolute shit out of it on the Anniversary collection.

>>12847374I do agree that ZAMN overstays its welcome but it's still a good game.
>>12839843sounds neat, thanks for posting>>12840369well it shares core qualities of perspective and motion with pac-man, but is instead focused on shooting. So why not top-down maze shooter?I have posted before on here about it, but I really love Gain Ground. It's an awesome experience figuring out how to beat each level. That said, I find it really frustrating, because as much fun as the game is on Hardest, it's also basically impossible to clear solo without inevitably losing all of your people. Too often, and as early as world 2, you end up in stages where only one specific character can clear the stage, and if that one char doesn't play completely perfectly, then you will inevitably lose all your people and gameover. Also, some of the powers are interesting, but pretty gimmicky and useless. The magic warriors basically all fall into this category. I'd like to see a sequel that makes more stuff like this but with something to tone down the oppressive levels of perfectionism required to perfect clear solo. Like keep the difficulty of figuring out the levels, but maybe make it less pixel-perfect on shit like "hit this enemy exactly here with this one character or you game over". It would be better I think if every character had a backup, or could be given a health power-up to be able to take a hit without dying.
berzerk and sheriff are early examples
