Did you ever play EverQuest? What are your thoughts on it, and any interesting memories you wanna share?
>>
sucked

i returned it to walmart after 1 week

people told me "oh you picked a bad race with dark elf" welll why is it in the game

combat was super lame but mmos still haven't fixed it
>>
I downloaded the free trial. Rolled a lizard. Got lost. Rolled a Dwarf, ran around some city while the chat was spammed with arena messages like "EverQuest has destroyed YourLife", got lost, logged out and went back to playing Asheron's Call for several years.

>interesting memories
I played when it launched. GM's for the server tried to do a RPG story event over several days/weeks, something about good vs evil, Firiona Vie vs some Dark Elf princess I think, maybe possessed by Innoruuk. The story culminated in a pve/pvp event in Kithicor, which was a mostly abandoned zone at the time and was relatively empty (they added undead mobs later). Evil races came in from Commonlands, and good races started at Rivervale. While the GM's were trying to tell the story, and sending groups of good/evil mobs towards each side for players to kill, the lag was unbearable and nearly impossible to play with. So many people were running around and complaining that it was difficult for anything to get done, story or fighting. I suppose the GM's got so frustrated with how the event turned out, they just decided to "have fun" with it by creating another Dark Elf named Hate (controlled by a GM), and he just ran around deathtouching people until everyone was gone. I guess evil won that day.
>>
Anyone has this pic but in high resolution?

Game has its charm. It's still pretty good even today. The grind is still there unless someone powerlevels you snd even then it takes days Or weeks
>>
My dad had no beds in his house but had two computers and high speed Internet. We played EverQuest together. I was a frog. Later I dropped it for FFXI.

You sound like a retard who was justifiably filtered.
>>
>>12840631
>you picked a bad race with dark elf
Not really wrong. I played a dark elf in the early days as well, and the faction system makes everyone hate you (because you're evil, regardless of religion). The only other places that tolerate you in the old world are the trolls and ogres. It's actually one of the more unique and "fun" aspects of the game, imo.
>>
dark elf enchanter uses mind tricks to get around faction hate
>>
>>12842036
Anyway the game is still extremely grindy. Even using mercs, you can only solo up to level 80 or 90 before hitting a brick wall and have to get a guild mate to powerlevel you. Even then you can only gain like 1 or 2 levels a day. Otherwise the game is huge, has a massive amount of content, and yes it still has that old charm which I suppose is why many people keep playing it
>>
>>12840517
I played for a few months on project 99 on blue (the server.)

Great game world, great atmosphere, very grindy but the down time between healing and grinding gives you a lot of opportunity to engage in the social aspect of the game, I think if you weren't really into that aspect of it the game would be unplayable, but the systems in the game really do encourage sharing skills and organizing play. Last time I played WoW it was just waiting in queus for dungeons, even when I was in a raiding guild the actual organization beforehand was non existent, I understand why it's like that, people are busy, but it just does not hit the same.
>>
>>12840517
Played it in 99. It taught me everything I need to know about the future, good and bad. Like:
>Your guild leader (aka "janny" or "mod") was the person who can sit on their computer 24/7 so, unlike you the job-haver and woman-fucker, they are mentally ill and settle all disputes with judgement based on ego trips, schizophrenia, and sexual degeneracy.
or
>the cost of sex is that you won't be good enough to PvP
or
>No one wants to be a healer bcuz healers are for fags but if you're the rarespawn who plays a healer and dgaf about insults, you can charge ridiculous amounts of plat to join a raid because low supply high demand is in your favor.
or
>if a hot chick wants to take you to see Slayer, pays for the tickets and gas and everything, don't fucking bail at the last minute saying "but my enchanter needs lvl 29 by tomorrow it's really important!" no i didn't do that but my best friend did so i told him he was a fag, turned off my computer immediately and said "well I'll be happy to go" and that's how I traded a best friend who was actually a fag for a wife who is now my best friend and has tiddies

That's why I'm now just a worthless filthy casual online, but also IRL medfag who enjoys unc life more than most of the people I gamed with.

>Firiona Vie - main has clicky-stick LFG, my twink was a ranger to abuse forage components and Cult of Lockjaw Merchant's Guild 4Lyfe. Duty obliges me to say "fuck Shadowknights" but honestly you guys were always fun to play with.
>>

>>

EAR guild on FV is great to casuals amd newbies. They are super friendly, and quite large. They will help you in many ways

Otherwise I wouldn't even bother cause the raid scene is toxic

modern eq tlps are depressing
nobody plays together, they just run 3-40 boxes and play by themselves
zombies just going through the motions because the game reminds them of back when they didn't hate existing
>>
>>12842406
They may as well just allow people to have 5 mercs instead of one. Multiboxing, I mean what's the point. Seems like a huge amount of work just to be able to play the game. Of course if they allowed 5 mercs, then people would flip out and rage at the game devs
>>
>>12842456
>They may as well just allow people to have 5 mercs instead of one
They intentionally design the game to promote boxing as hard as possible to get people to buy multiple subs so they can show their investors massively inflated numbers.

Seriously, if you do not run at least 3 characters in modern EQ (including TLPs) you are a second class subscriber that will be actively locked out of content and handicapped economically and in progression.
>b-but just make friends
I'm sure that's a great solution for 0.1% of the playerbase. When virtually every player is already boxing, there's not a huge pool of players looking to form more restrictive static groups for content they can already solo clear. And it only addresses part of the imbalance anyways. At best you might get a guildie to drop his 6th box to let you leech. Amazing gameplay.

I've tried a lot of "classic" MMOs lately, official and private servers. All the players are zombies. The community of 90s and early 00s is old and jaded. At this point it'd be preferrable to play these games in some kind of offline mode in a world populated by ChatGPT AI bots.
>>
>>12842493
Oh, also while talking about the rotting corpse of EQ - botting. It's insane. Some servers have more bots than actual players. They run the same MQ2 SK script, farm 24/7 in the same zones on every server, and never get banned no matter how much they're reported. It almost makes you think DBG is directly involved even beyond the krono scheme they operate. And let's not even get into the bots on the TLP servers. Chinese RMT have recently taken that over from fat unemployed boomers and ramped it up 100x.

It's a game of zombies and bots. The private server scene was banging for a while before THJ came along and DBG's lawyers shut EQEmu down.

Basically, avoid everything EverQuest at all costs these days.
>>
>>12840517
>Did you ever play EverQuest?
Yes, back on release.
>What are your thoughts on it
None really, other than the copper/silver/gold money system was good.
>any interesting memories you wanna share?
No memory at all.

The elf girl on the cover made my young PP hard.
>>
>>12842493
Well yea that's all true. Honestly, I think final Fantasy 11 has the most soul out of all of them. So if I was gonna pay for a subscription, I'd just play FFXI instead
>>
daoc was much less popular so it never gets threads that live past 5 replies so using this thread to state how much i enjoyed it. im playing eden the private server and it's pretty good, though population sucks on weekdays
>>
>>12842493
It'd be preferable to play with ai bots than most faggot niggers in any mmorpg these days. Although, pso blue burst is a rare exception
>>
I tried P99 when green released, I played a rogue to about 30 or so.

Had some fun but you can really tell the endgame just gets incredibly circlejerky due to fighting over limited boss spawns and shit, so it kind of kills some motivation to keep going. I've tried to go back a few times but no one really makes new characters anymore and it's just boring.
>>
>>12842668
Isn't the grind very slow? Like a year to hit max level?
>>
>>12842748
Hitting max takes a while but it doesn't change up that much unless you get into raiding. If you've grinded at 20 you've grinded at 60.
>>
>>12842786
I think I'd rather just do grinding and power leveling in retail and enjoy the massive world. 33 expansions now, a huge amount of stuff to do. Leveling is still a grind on retail but nothing like the old school servers
>>
>>12842406
I've played on a bunch of tlps, and while there are an enormous number of faggots, I never had much trouble finding a group. The problems start when you get higher level and want to start farming items, because there is always some boxing dipshit hogging the camp for hours/days. It's better than p99, though, because the only way you're getting a camp is if you schedule it weeks in advance.
>>
>>12842803
I spent 2.5 years playing Everquest from Kunark to LDoN.
Went back and played solo on an emulator for a few months, realized that there's a ton of little quests and details in the original world and expansions I've never even seen. To this day I've still never played Tower of Frozen Shadow (was too high level when Velius was originally released and never went back). Barely ever did any of the lower-level Kunark content either. Never leveled an Iksar. Sleeper's Tomb. Plane of Mischief. All the Luclin raid zones. Never got further than Tier 2 raids in Planes of Power.

Frankly it's hard to imagine "more content" being all that compelling. By the time I quit, they had already blew their load and gone off the rails as far as any kind of respect for the lore and world coherency. Where is there to go after you have been slaying half of the world's pantheon of deities? EQ's combat is pretty good, but not so deep that it really needs 30 expansions of content to develop.
>>
>>12842879
I just liked roaming around the zones. The old school graphics really hits. I was in a social guild so not really worried about max level raiding and all that. Just enjoying the experience
>>
>>12842879
>>12842936
If you just want to explore, you should try the new Everquest Legends server. It's mostly made for solo'ing, and you can multiclass any 3 classes. The gameplay loop is kind of lame, but you do get the opportunity to explore all the zones and do them by yourself, which is pretty damn cool actually. There's a lot of Everquest a lot of people didn't experience because it was a different time and for a different type of gamer. I never did raiding because I never had the patience or the longterm interest in the game.
>>
>>12842247
You think he's bitter? Why are you projecting? I don't think he's bitter at all and he's humble bragging about fucking the big tiddy slayer chick. He won, anon. You lost. I hope your enchanter got to lvl 29, fag.
>>
>>12842406
As someone who grew up on browser MMOs like Urban Dead (RIP) and Travian, it's so weird seeing how these top 3D MMOs allow multi accounts to help the same player, when in most browser games I played multis were either against the rules or, if allowed, must never get close/help/give items to each other.
Even the supposedly most hardcore EVE online is full of multis too.
Really made me never want to play a classic MMO, I prefer the browser ones (at least before they all died or became P2W)
>>
>>12843159
Boxing has always been looked down on, but you can't stop someone from having multiple computers and accounts. For the devs, it's hard to say no to that extra money, and it has always been a grey area, so it's tolerated to a point. There are current official servers with boxing restrictions, but EQ is a long way from being the game it used to be, and it's mostly just on life support and trickle income for Daybreak. They don't really pay attention to it despite rules and nothing can be done. Browser games don't have to worry about this kind of thing.
>>
>>12843104
Maybe I'll try it in the future if I ever get a new computer
>>
>>12840517
when I first saw the floating armor summon of a different player I thought it was a graphics glitch

in the starting area of the dark elves there was a whole bunch of drowned bodies
>>
>>12843179
>so it's tolerated to a point.
Which is how it should be. Anti-boxing sentiment ranges from insufferable busybody redditfaggotry to legitimate concerns with systematic abuse.

>>12842493
There will never be MMOs like classic EQ again (or FFXI, DAoC, etc even classic WoW). The conditions under which they formed, such that thousands of players from diverse, expectations and playstyles could mingle, socialize and explore the fantasy world together with relatively light security controls and moderation, were unique and cannot be recreated. The demise of the classic MMO was inevitable. Scale and time inevitably ruins the soul of multiplayer online games. As number of players increases, the odds of a tiny minority exploiting an edge case to ruin the experience for the majority approaches 100%. So multiplayer games must always be extra-hardened and excessively balanced. "No-fun-allowed" policies against multi-boxing are just one of the many problems that arise from this inevitable abuse. The end result is convergence on low-stakes friendslop in games like Roblox and Fortnite.

The first generation of 3D MMOs predate "Social Media" and smartphones. MySpace(2003), Facebook(2004), YouTube(2005), Twitter (2006), iPhone (2007). They predate many other forms of online gaming. In the early days of the internet, playing an MMO was just one of the things people chose spend their time doing online as they socialized with other people. Today, these same people, if not playing Roblox or Fortnite, would be doom-scrolling on Facebook, X, Twitch, YouTube.

There's also a large fraction of people who realized they just don't want to play online games at all. While people in the early 2000s were curious to try out massively multiplayer online games, people now realize they don't want random strangers intruding on their gaming time. They want to game by themselves or with known friends.

>>
Anti multi-box is mostly a niche thing, isn't it? For games or servers where the playerbase wants the old EQ experience of being forced to work together with other players all the time instead of everybody soloing outside of raids
Most MMOs this century seem to be designed for soloing anyway.
I guess the only other thing is people annoyed at PvP multiboxing where you've got perfectly synchronized first-strikes coming from a pile of characters standing on top of each other, but I don't play pvp so not my problem
>>
>>12841539
>powerlevle

that's a thing in everquest?

I tried P99 but the grind for warriors was insane I picked troll shadow knight & only found out after the fact they couldn't really enter into the good cities without massive grinding witch is entirely separate from gaining levels?
>>
>>12844940
Yes in modern retail. FV server I was on. XP bOnus is already 100% extra. And a guild mate or whoever can let you join their party and they will grind for an hour or two in a higher level zone, and you can usually get 1 or maybe 2 levels per hour. This is only necessary around level 80 or 90 or so, so from 90 to 130, that's still like 20 or 30 days but obviously much faster than solo which would take you 6 months and you'd burn out fast and quit.

Best to not race for max level, take it slow, enjoy all the content and stuff, learn the game properly. But yes power leveling is an option.
>>
>>12844463
>Anti multi-box is mostly a niche thing, isn't it?
boxing is trash gameplay, games that allow and design for boxing are trash games, the design of everquest inherently gives boxers are massive advantage and the cashgrabbing new owners seized on that and actively design the game to incentivize boxing even harder and punish non-boxers
>everybody soloing outside of raids
people box on raids in everquest, in fact, there are people (and rmt) that run 40+ boxes and solo raids
>Most MMOs this century seem to be designed for soloing anyway
people box in every mmo that doesn't have extremely aggressive policies preventing it

boxing is just an extreme form of pay-to-win, if you allow and encourage pay-to-win then it becomes a pay-to-win video game
maybe you like pay-to-win, that's fine, but plenty of people understandably don't want to play that garbage
>>
>>12845149
>modern retail
in modern retail your merc carries you to level 80 in a matter of hours, then you get level 130 damage shields that stack for up to 220k+ per hit and grind to level 120 in like a day or two, then you either do progression quests for exp rewards (leveling by killing mobs isn't really a thing at 90+ unless you can slaughter entire zones at a time with ds like stated above) or just don't play the game at all and rely on overseer rewards (basically daily login bonus) to get you ~10% of a level per day the rest of the way
>>
>>12840517

>the design of everquest inherently gives boxers are massive advantage
The problem with Everquest is that it has too many classes and was ruthlessly designed to force cooperation. Consequently, the gameplay for most classes devolves and converges on boring completely mindless repetition. The only way to enjoy the gameplay is to play multiple characters at the same time.
>>
>>12845495
Granted yea the game doesn't hold up to later MMOs. There's still quite a lot of charm in the game if you just slow down and enjoy it

wow was the better game, objectively the peak of the genre, 10/10 game for the zone design and music alone
but nothing else i've played had a community like eq and that was where the real magic came from
it was a time when pc gaming was more niche and pcs were expensive enough that it was mostly adults
i played eq when i was around 13-14 years old and i never met another kid

the game was alive in a way i've never experienced since
no one knew anything, people grouped up and set out together to explore a truly unknown world
gms interacted directly with players, showing up as npcs and giving out special quests
players were constantly roleplaying, not in the cringe modern way but as simply trying to act like they were their characters inhabiting this world
it existed at that point of graphic quality where things looked shit enough that you used your imagination to fill in the gaps and i remember it as i imagined it, not as it really looked

>interesting memories
my first character was a ranger; you start in a region with bears wandering around
a ranger npc wandered the zone yelling that the bears were under her protection and if she saw you fighting one, she'd run over and kill you
one day i hear people yelling for help and after finding them, i see a high level dark elf killing the npc
all the rangers and druids in the zone jumped in to protect her, trying to heal her and fight the elf
he eventually killed us all but it really felt like this epic battle trying to protect our homeland
i guess it doesnt sound like much but it made such an impact on me that i remember it decades later

my best friends in game were a girl in college and a retired army vet
i remember us taking a long, dangerous journey between cities and stopping in a dark forest to rest
it was my last day to play before i was getting sent off to boarding school and i was content to spend it sitting around a campfire talking
we weren't taking a break from the game; that WAS the game
>>
>>12847762
>I don't know how you guys claim you can solo from 80 to 130 in two days
nobody claimed that? 80 to 120 is simple with buffs, 120 to 130 is a shitshow that will take months through overseer alone, you'll need boxes or friends to run you through partisans and shit otherwise to level at a decent rate

They literally do not care at this point. At least 95% of the assets added to the game in the past 15 years have just been EQ2 models dragged and dropped into EQ, broken shaders and everything.

I remember a few years back the lead artist had a breakdown because somebody asked her why everything she makes is sparkly rainbow reskins in a game where the entire playerbase is middle aged chuds.
>>
>>12847830
I got to about 100 using buffs and that daily XP boost. 90-100 was going to some sky island, you get shot there out of a cannon. Then I got power leveled to 113 which took about a couple of weeks. Then my computer got stolen so I haven't played EverQuest since...
>>
>>12847098
Not sure how that's relevant to the point. Fear and Hate are still boring for everyone but the pull group, once you have broken in.
>>
>>12846549
Nope. Boring. That's the point. Exploratpry coop was really fun in 1999-2000 when everyone was figuring out the game and socializing online was novel. But EQ is solved. Everyone playing now knows the meta and if you aren't pulling or crowd control there's really nothing for you to do except mindless repetition.

Multi-boxing people still play with friends. They group up with other multi-boxers and have a great time.

oh boy, I sure do love waiting 18 seconds to cast a spell that does 200 damage

Retail FFXI is easy and can hit 99 in like 3 or 4 days. Using an XP ring and the NPC party members.

The classic ffxi, yea that grind sucks and it's dependent on if you can find other players willing to join your party

>reading about all these cool items like the "gold leaf" that grants any class clarity for awesome mana regen

>it's locked behind not only of the most brutal fights in the entire game but also you must be level 46+ & have massive amounts of other groups to even break into the planes

no wonder the planes are always empty, what was sony thinking, how were solo player's supposed to get all that great loot?

The game is not friendly to solo players at all. That's why they created EverQuest Legends

I thought daybreak games got into a huge fight & shut them down last year?

half the journey is getting to lvl 60 so you can raid/get into the planes for the best gear though anon

not to mention your "epic" quest although the wiki said you can attempt those at lvl 40+?

It's true that EQ is actually pretty fun to play as a party management game if you don't automate it too hard. The class design itself is simplistic, but the broader gameplay routine of managing pulls, splits, aggro, and crowd control under the timer of respawns is engaging, because there's almost always room for micro-optimizations. Multiboxing Cleric/Ench is the peak solo Everquest experience, since it lets you do all of these things, on top of the fun of finding the best zone-specific charms.

Unfortunately, Everquest Legends is nothing like that. It's just "what if EQ went the way of retail WoW." There's no need to manage any mechanics, you just faceroll everything with 2-3 DPS classes like you're playing POE, and neutered dadgamers will call you a tryhard for pointing out how unfulfilling and shallow this is.

people say P99 never visits the planes but just the other night I saw over 70 players in the same guild storm plane of growth,no idea how they choose to divide the loot with that many players though when the bosses only drop a handful of items?

Yea the epic quests, I did those. And hitting to level 60 solo with a merc assist is pretty easy, takes like 2 or 3 days if you grind.

There's a ton of old content that I never got around to trying, I regret not doing it

>>12852402
Of course everquest Legends is shallow. No one ever suggested replacing retail EQ with Legends. I myself skipped Legends and stayed on FV retail

>merc assist

I was talking the classic servers locked in old expansions like p99 anon

Oh well, I have no interest in that or grinding for 12 months. Just not my thang
