When I've been to arcades the there were around 5 adults for every actual kid in there. Average age skewed late 20s. No one will will give a single shit if you walk through the door.

Real arcades used to be more adults than kids. At some point in the 80s they became more kid friendly, and buisnesses like chuck-e-cheese were kid-only as safer alternative (in parents minds) than the real seedier arcades and pool halls, and their earlier rule banning men unaccompanied by children was to keep pedos away. That rule faded away in more recent years.

In the electromechanical era of arcades in the 70s and earlier they were almost exclusively adults. Sega stands for "service games" which made arcade machines specifically for military bases, and arcades from the 50s through the 70s where places for men to hang out to avoid their wives.

The golden era of gaming was late 80-s mid 90s. Back when real men were in the arcade and where you would show off your skills and gamer cred. Yes. Any arcade I've been to has had plenty of adults who weren't there with kids. If you're going to an arcade that has old games, everybody knows that people in their 20s-50s+ will be interested in going, and that it isn't just a kids and parents zone like a Chuck E Cheese arcade back in the 90s.
And yes, people might approach you to join a game, or hop into a co-op or versus game, that's kind of the point of an arcade.

yes. i saw mostly kids and teens play the rhythm games on weekends . but those machines aren't /vr/. the oldest game in my local arcade aren't even /vr/ anymore. unless you count that one machine where they put an emulator in(with 900 games or whatever) with a terrible UI and no instructions

I go to retro arcades all the time as a guy in my mid-late 20s, it’s usually people around my age or guys way older then me in their 40s-50s who grew up with 70s/80s nostalgia gaming.

Even if there’s families/children, they don’t care, it’s usually modern entertainment places they always go to, not actual video game arcades.

Depends on the arcade, I'd wager that's most of the clientele at most modern arcades. Unless you're going to a Chuck E. Cheese or whatever the modern equivalent is. Even the places with kids I've been to lately, I always seen a mix of kids and adults playing.

Barcades are the thing now. Like, every arcade I can think of that I have visited in the last 10 years also has a bar. So unless you're not into bars in general or places that serve alcohol for after-hours entertainment, go check one out and enjoy!

That was true very early on, but Segas first hit game was periscope in 1966 which changed everything. It was the first arcade game to cost $0.25 to play (previous games ran on dimes, including pinball). It was also the game that put namco on the map as they originally developed it. This was the "space invaders of the 60s". The success made sega focus on fun arcade games over gambling games from that point on.

There are new arcades full of carnival-style shovelware for kids, and old people won't want to go to those, unless they have their own kids to bring along. Is there some other category?
