Playing Earthbound for the first time. The music is great, but the turn based and enemy encounter battles are tedious as hell. Does it get better? Is the hotel the only way to restore my PP points?

>Does it get better?
no. why would it? if you dont like turn based battles then the entire genre is not for you

>Does it get better?
Yeah, the beginning is probably the hardest part of the game.
>Is the hotel the only way to restore my PP points?
No, the butterflies give you some (probably all, at this point) as well. Your mom will also fully restore it if you visit her.

I like pokemon fine, but pokemon also has the Repel item so you dont get stuck in battle with a million zubats and ratatas

You'll eventually get a "warp" special you can use on the overworld map. It takes a good 3-4 seconds to build up enough speed to take action and warp you to a location you wanted to return to, and the process will freeze all activity on the map; many people abuse this freeze-frame to traverse the map more quickly and avoid enemy encounters.

Also, playing alone as Ness at the beginning of the game at level 1 with basically zero equipment and zero money and zero items while you continue to learn and adjust to the game's mechanics is quite practically the hardest part of the entire game. Battles and enemy advancement become easier and easier as you get more power and can learn what to predict.

Oh, and, if you're, like, 5-10 levels stronger than that map/town's enemies, they will outright FLEE from you if you get near them.
Plus, if you are marginally strong enough and enounter an enemy, you won't even enter the battle mode and the game will instantly proclaim victory and give you your rewards.
>red encounter - enemy approaches your back = enemy always acts first
>grey encounter - face-to-face encounter = whoever has highest SPD stat acts first
>green encounter - you approach enemy's back = you always act first
>OHKO encounter - you're 5+ levels stronger = you instantly win

This only happens when you're really overleveled desu but the combat in this game isn't some unresponsive time-eating slog like a lot of old turn based rpgs

>the turn based and enemy encounter battles are tedious as hell
so are gamers the only group of people who will actively pursue things they dont like so they can complain about them online?

I went into the game blind, I had no idea what it was about other than being told the music was good. I didnt expect a turn based combat system. That being said, the other anon was right, as I leveled up those battles are much easier to get through.

God I fucking hate shaders.

It's not that bad. The "reflection" of the screen on the borders looks awful though.
