Could I get some recommendations for some old surreal games? Bonus points if they have plots that don't lean on the surreal setting/characters as a crutch.

And I guess to expound on that, the story doesn't remain purposefully cryptic in a sort of lazy way due to the surreal nature. Though if it's an actually decent weird story, I wouldn't mind that either.

It's interesting. Has a very Lynchian style and I like how the director took some risks on the cinematography. It also has a very coherent story for this sort of thing.

not retro but I ain't telling. Especially considering how on point the style is. You know if it goes on sell often? I may just go for it.

Lawnmower Man and Vangers look particularly good. Gonna grab the rom for Lawnmower Man and play it tonight.

God I miss the whimsical surreal locations early computer art like this depicted, especially the ones shown in early 90s CGI. You would think with the fact that modern PCs can do this kind of look in real-time now and with how popular retro games are currently someone would try to make a whole game like that.

It really isn't that serious.

There are a couple that do a pretty good job, but it's a bizarrely hard look to capture. There are some animators that strictly animate in ancient animation softwares just because you can't get a genuine enough aesthetic in things like blender.

Just some random surreal thing I came across a good while ago. His channel and videos were all removed last I checked. Thankfully I downloaded that one as I really liked the premise (what little there was) and, of course, the low poly style. Can't remember exactly what program he used to animate it, but it was one of the older ones.

Not really what I was looking for, that looks more like a game that might have been possible to make back in the 90s. (In fact, it reminds me heavily of Sonic Fighters).

I meant games that look like the raycasted CGI images that likely took half an hour if not several hours to render at the time such as the one you posted in >>12844905 or picrel. Specifically, the early to mid-90s, there were massive rapid improvements in both CPUs and GPUs in the 90s to the point that late 90s CGI basically looks like it's from a different era.

I recently tried out Sentient for PS1.
It's meant to be a serious science fiction adventure, but somehow the devs accidentally made it look and feel uncanny and disturbing as fuck.
It really boggles my mind how they could look at these weird as fuck npcs and go "Alright, this looks perfect!"
And the way how they behave is equally weird.
To be fair, it was a really ambitious project back then since the game gives every NPC his own unique AI that constantly changes depending on what you say to them, and instead of choosing pre-defined dialogue options you build your sentences yourself out of various text blocks, which is a pretty cool idea in theory. But it really didn't work out, instead everyone just starts to hate you at some point or just acts in a completely nonsensical way.
It's clunky as fuck and feels like a walking simulator most of the time, but if you want some sort of trippy science fiction fever dream, go for it.
