I'm at the library, I found some books and things and read the entries. I defeated the basilisk, that was actually a lucky fight. But now when I try to leave there's a spectre. He just KILLS any character he manages to hit. I'm going to try to cast bless and protection from evil on the party next time. If that doesn't work I might be soft-locked, you can't leave the library once you take the books and there's no way to put them back either. Everybody is level 1 still. This is a real pickle.

Why the hell are you at Mendor's Library at level 1?

>basilisk: 30+ hitpoints, and anyone who looks at is petrified (saving throw is allowed, but a fighter must roll 17 or higher on a D20).
The game gives you an option to bring mirrors so you at least have a chance here. Its melee will still one hit kill most level ones (1d10 damage, and most characters have 4-7hp at level 1).

>spectre: 30+ hitpoints. drain 2 levels every hit (no saving throw), instant permanent death on any level 1
you are so fucked. A spectre is one of the most powerful undead in 1st edition, just below a vampire. why did you even come here? You should be fighting kobolds and shit long before this.

I dunno I just stumbled in. The only thing in there was the basilisk which I clonked from behind a few times and it was dead. Now I can't seem to get out of the place without contronting that damned spectre. Actually I already purchased silver weapons, and I have a magic bow, and my cleric has a magic flail. I think I can do it, it has like 35 or something HP (I looked it up in the monster manual). I have a save basically right outside the door. I can camp in there, and memorize spells, and prepare that way.

My wife has been vaguely watching me play and she thinks it's funny that I'm trapped like this, heh.

Oh I forgot to mention, not only did I beat the basilisk, I don't have mirrors. All I need to do is get out of the library, and go through the tunnel / portal to the area with the well. I can level up, everybody got bumped up well enough. Killing the basilisk gave everybody like 500+xp. I have the manual too, that should be worth 25,000 GP which is enough to get my levels up plus a bit to spend.

ACKchewally with Pool of Radiance, you can remove everybody from the party, start a new game, and then load everybody from the save game, IF they are still level 1, and start the game over with your level 1 characters but with any XP and loot they gained, without any issue. The story will start over, you get the tour, you can go into the slums and gain ANOTHER of any of the magical items or loot items you found too. You can actually do this with any of the later games but strange things happen and the game can easily become corrupted randomly. With Pool of Radiance it works 100%. This has only been tested on C64, Apple II, and IBM.

spells? Level 1 a magic user has a single spell (burning hands or magic missle). a cleric will have plus the bonus spell if you have high wisdom, which you should, but that wont help here. clerics also cant turn undead agains ta spectre until level 7+ (maybe level 6 if you get a natural 20). Raise dead cast offensively is the only spell that can hurt them but a cleric wont have that until way later in the game.

Spectres are also armor class 2 (better than plate armor). They are also immune to non-magic weapons, assuming your THACO was even high enough, although silver weapons may work in goldbox games, I cannot remember. Normally its a +1 or better needed to hit them. They are a serious threat to even mid level parties.

You are fucked but restarting you wont lose much progress if still level 1.

I can cast Bless on the party and also Protection from Evil. Seeing as how there is no use having a healing spell, since a single hit means the character is dead, won't cause light wounds do something?

>You are fucked but restarting you wont lose much progress if still level 1.
I think I will use the trick of removing everybody from the party and restarting and re-adding them.
>>
Can't you just flee from every battle including forced encounters just by having everyone move off the battle map?
>>
>>12842446
But then what, I'm still trapped! He doesn't go away just because I fled does he?
>>
Actually I'm trying this again and my thief moved past the spectre which hit the thief, who took 6 points of damage, but must have resisted the drain. I think this can be done, move in on it and attack, get it turned, then do the same. You get a to hit bonus if you have 2 or more characters next to a baddie, which somehow increases especially from the back. Anyway I have a chance but it will probably take me ten battles lel. My fighters, who have silver weapons, if they land can do up to 18 points damage each, cleric 12. Every time I've tried this all my PCs have the initiative.
>>
>>12842453
2 or more characters adjacent to each other, next to a baddie.

I looked it up, no saving throw indeed, could have been a bug in the game but I have an un-ID'd ring on that character I found which is "magic" so who knows.
>>
>>12842445
>won't cause light wounds do something?
that is a touched based spell, which in real D&D would trigger the level drain on you when using it. But i odubt the game is coded that way.

Also in 1st edition rules:
>Non-corporeal creatures are not affected by this spell, nor are undead
later versions of D&D actually recovers hp to the undead if you cast cause wounds on them. but that wasnt implemented this early on.
>>
>>12842465
They tried really well to get the rules autistically correct. It could be a bug or oversight, but it could have been the ring, which is un-ID'd.

Would cure light wounds harm it maybe?
>>
>>12842470
>>Would cure light wounds harm it maybe?
in some versions it does. I cant remember if it was implemented at this point or not. It still needs a success melee roll to hit in addition to the spell, since it is touch based, so a cleric hitting a AC:2 spectre you need to roll 18 or better on a D20 to even use it.

cause wounds spells are really unreliable for clerics in 1st edition due to their below average THACO.
>>
Yeah I'll give this battle maybe another ten tries and then start over using the remove / add trick. I feel like if the stars and RNGs align, it can happen.
>>
>>12842470
Man, there's an edition of D&D where all cleric spells can be "reversed", I forget if it's Basic or Advanced, but it was really strange and funny. Like the other anon said, "Cure Light Wounds" would become "Cause Light Wounds" when reversed. "Light" would become "Darkness", "Create Food and Drink" would be "Destroy Food and Drink", etc. The things nerds think of.
>>
>>12844104
It's probably this one. Thankfully they left out the food mechanic, that one would just be straight up annoying.
>>
>>12842431
this is why the game has 10 save slots btw
>>
>>12844350
It has one save disk. I should have made several and alternated between them.
>>
>>12844104
Original Dnd. Anti-Clerics are essentially a class of their own since they function so differently from Clerics, and the balance of the game essentially tries to build up Evil High Priests (level 8 anti-clerics) as the appropriate final bosses of a campaign.
>>
>>12844369
On the save disk you can save in slots A-J though
>>
>>12844448
Not on the C64 version you can't.
