I've never played a tactical strategy in my life, is Final Fantasy Tactics a good introduction to the genre?
>>12842591Tactics Ogre is Matsuno's best game.
>>12842595That's another one I've heard good things about, how do the two compare?
>>12842591Shining Force or Vandal Hearts are more beginner-friendly.If you want to start with FFT, make sure to keep multiple save files.
>>12842609Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check them out.
>>12842598FFT is pretty much just a dumbed-down version of TO. Smaller arenas with fewer units, not as many classes, no branching story paths and less content overall. TO also has much better writing. I guess you could argue that FFT is more accessible to a beginner, but it's also the inferior game and less likely to make you want to play more. Plus if you're just looking for accessibility, FFT Advance and a lot of other games in the genre have it beat.
yeah play FFT first because if you play FFT advance you won't want to go back
>>12842609I don't see how Vandal Hearts is more beginner friendly. If anything it does more advanced stuff with positionning that takes into account 3D elevation. Plus it's actually a well balanced game that demands to play well with no easy way out to out-grind the game or brute force themI mean it's a great game but from my point of view it's like starting with one of the best ones which is a sure way to be disappointed by the rest of the genre. OP should start with something like Shining Force 3, also great, but more beginner friendly; and then he'll appreciate Vandal Hearts more. But sure, if he plans to only play one game, Vandal Hearts is great.
>>12842591no it's garabge and redditplay Shining Force 2 or Vandal Hearts
>>12842591UFO: Enemy Unknown or Jagged Alliance 2 are infinitely more interesting.
>>12842591FFT has some complex mechanics like JP spillover and job unlocking which I could see a beginner struggling with. The artist of the image you posted actually talks about how much they struggled with the game when they first played it in the Japanese text.If you want a really really starter-friendly introduction game, I'd recommend Fire Emblem 7. It has a long, handhold-y tutorial that'll walk you through all the basics.
Fire Emblem 7 is deliberately constructed for people who have never played a tactics game, even having mandatory tutorial chapters. FFT and Tactics Ogre both require more grinding and long-term planning than other tactics games and are bad to start with.
>>1284259199% of games are "a good introduction to the genre". developers make these games so anyone can just pick them up and play them, thats how they make money. developers dont make games that are hard to understand and play because that makes less money. If you are 80 IQ you can pick up any game and enjoy it.
