>>12843921didnt the AES by default give you only limited continues?Stupid argument in general, if you dont like continues, dont use them
I can see the argument against continues holding weight back in the day when one game would have to last you months, but now with every game ever made at my fingertips i dont really want to play the easy half of the game over and over again to get to try the hard parts again
>>12843964Use save states
neo geo was the AAA of its time. the absolute best graphics, but mediocre gameplay for the vast majority of titles. nearly every great neo geo game was just a better looking clone of something else. I say all this with authority, as someone who's never even played a neo geo game.
>>12843921>Neo Geo often cost three times as much as the games for the SNES. Are they three times as good? The way he asks about games being three times as good makes it sound like he was afraid of what would be the answer if the question were just "are they better?"Ok, so even if they're not three times as good, what if I'm willing to spend more for a better experience? Isn't this also fair?
>>12844091back in the day more computing power didnt just mean better graphics, but also that you could do more in your gamesA Snes game will always feel like a snes game, but a neo geo game can feel like a modern pixel art game
Punchout on the NES and Super Punch Out on the SNES are two games from the top of my head that punch way above their weightclass (no pun intended)Super punch out looks and feels like an arcade game (which it was based on I know), they translated that to the SNES really well>>12844117The quality of neo geo games is much better then home console games overall id say, but most of them are short due to being arcade gamesI want to say id be the kid to save up for one, but really, 600 for the console and 200 per game i am not so sure.if you are an adult with money to waste sure, as a kid its a tough sell because you can do alot of cool things with 600$ plus games easily 1000$ in the 90sYou could get a SNES with mario world and a used motor scooter to ride around with
Because most of the Neo Geo library is fighting games. They're damn good fighting games, of course, some of the best in the whole genre, but excluding them you get just a handful of games from other genres.
What i like about arcade games is how they give you a 20 second tutorial and you know everything you need to play.I hate having to figure out weird mechanics in new games
>>12843854over priced piece of shit lol snes classic is like 120-200
>impossible to find outside major cities>even inside them, very limited distribution>controllers $150>memory card $120>games $150-300>very limited selection of gamesThat being said, Baseball Stars is probably the most fun you can have with vidya game baseball, to this day, and I enjoyed the SS games and that Garou which obviously used the same engine and plays just like SS game.Neo Turf Masters is good too. But overall it's a bit of a stinker of a console, and the only reason it's popular is because of Metal Slug which is fun, for its genre, but not really my idea of a good time for more than 15 minutes at a time.
>>12844238terrible bait.Snes classic is a worthless emu box
>>12843854The fact that it was lacking in two big genres, namely beat em ups and JRPGs. The latter became the system seller genre for dedicated home console people (Phantasy Star/Shining Force for Sega, Dragon Quest / Final Fantasy for Nintendo, Ys for PC Engine, etc). Just think of how many JRPGs were on the SNES. The value proposition of a Neo Geo was there if you were an arcade gamer, but the lack of RPGs was a big deal. The closest you had was something like Crossed Swords or that one Samurai Showdown RPG for the CD system. But they weren't really the same.
>>12843854Arcade perfect ports are fine but it doesn't qualify as a home console. Cero variety besides metal slut and the retarded punchy stuff.
>>12843854>plays on the AES>uses the CD stickI'm in this image and I don't like it>>12843921>infinite continuesThe AES only gives you 3 credits, you can't add more.
>>12843945The Neogeo was super popular in arcades, so anyone who actually lived through the era and was into games got to play on them there and therefore has nostalgia for the Neogeo and it's library of games. Those who don't are larpers who weren't alive and playing vidya back then.
>>12844152>most of the Neo Geo library is fighting gamesThis is false
>>12844292>The AES only gives you 3 credits, you can't add moreDepends on the game. This was in early 1992, so pretty early in the system's life too, and before fighting games became a thing.
>>12843854>95% of people retro gaming means SNES and NES, maybe SegaPeople have nostalgia for games they actually saw and played. Neo geo had the cultural impact of a wet fart, with only metal slug being fashionable enough to remember.
>>12844295Neo geo survived despite never having a hit. They were cheap (from arcade owners perspective) and cheap to shuffle up games for multiple locations to keep them fresh enough to earn the odd quarter. The multicarts were a staple in convenience stores but less important for actual arcades. My local mom and pop video store had one and it was always a dent mix that chnaged all the time. Older games like magician lord or nam 75 would show up with one of the annual releases of the annual fighting franchises. Then 2 months later it would be bust a move and golf.
>>12844364>never having a hitI blame the lack of 4 players support.
>>12843854>>Short and fun gamesThe Neo Geo library is the most overrated library of any console ever. Once you're past the fighting games, Metal Slug, and Magical Drop the quality drops off immensely. Also: of that crop of fighting games only about 5 of them are any good.
>>12844091I don't even think it had the best graphics. We're only looking at 1990 to about 1994, right? Well, Metal Slug came out in 1996. The best looking Neo Geo game in the 90-94 time period is probably Samurai Shodown II. Which is a great looking game. But when you look at the rest of the Neo's library the art direction and design doesn't hold up to the SFC and MD. I would consider Mega Man X to be a much better looking game than Magician Lord, and a vastly superior game in terms of gameplay. I would say the same about Super Castlevania IV. As well as Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, if we want to bring the PC Engine into this discussion.
>>12844349t. has never stepped foot in an arcade
>>12844364>neo geo>never having a hitFatal Fury 2 was the second most popular arcade game in the year that it came out (first was SF2, obviously). If the second most popular game in the arcade isn't a hit then nothing is.
>>12844301yeah besides fighters there's metal slug, that golf game, that twinkle something shmuf, and uhh uhhhhhh
>>12844453You're focusing on art style, not graphical capabilities. That's entirely irrelevant to the point that you're trying to make.
>>12844567Neogeo has a lot of fighting games, there's no doubt about that, but they only make up 34% of the library. Most of the games released for it weren't fighting games. You need to play more games. Check out stuff like Strikers 1945 Plus, Alpha Mission 2, King of the Monsters (1 and 2), Power Spikes 2, Thrash Rally, Top Hunter, 8 Man, etc.
>>12844571>You're focusing on art style, not graphical capabilities. No shit. Almost like I wrote it that way on purpose.>That's entirely irrelevant to the point that you're trying to make. That *is* the point I'm trying to make. Neo Geo might have more capability on paper, but that doesn't matter if the artists don't take advantage of it.
>>12844559Only Latin Americans give a shit about SNK's fighting games any more
>>12844579The artists did take advantage of it. Neogeo games that got ported to SNES and Genesis had to undergo massive downgrades in the process.>>12844580Even if we ignore fighting games, it's clear that you have never stepped foot in an arcade in your life. Especially not back in the Neogeo's heyday.
>>12844578>Strikers 1945 Plus,Shmup>Alpha Mission 2Shmup>King of the Monsters (1 and 2)Interesting games, but not better than the offerings from the SFC and MD at the time period. >Power Spikes 2, Thrash Rally, Top Hunter, 8 Man, etc.Now you're getting into "meh" territory. If they were $40 MD games they'd be worth it, but $200? Those games are rental-core.
>>12844581>The artists did take advantage of it.You're gonna look at a game like Top Player's Golf and say that? >Neogeo games that got ported to SNES and Genesis had to undergo massive downgrades in the process. Those were the very tip-top Neo Geo fighting games. The rest of the Neo catalog was highly "meh" until about 1996. By which time the Neo was no longer a cutting edge platform.
>>12844584Oh, so you're just a faggot who moves the goalpost. Alright, no point in interacting with you anymore. You're not here to discuss games, just to be a console warring faggot.
>>12844581Yeah because I never had any arcades around me that weren't goddamned Chuck E. Cheese, SNK wss never half as influential as Namco, Nintendo, SEGA or even Midway
>>12844592You might think that game looks unimpressive, but even Top Player's Golf would had to have been downgraded if ported to the SNES and Mega Drive.I understand your argument that SNES and Mega Drive games look great. I agree, they do, and even some ports from the Neo Geo don't look so bad, like King of the Monsters. But the Neo Geo was capable of a lot more than those systems could handle on a technical level and the reason you're not impressed by it now is because you've seen later stuff and newer consoles which were capable of so much more. But this was literally cutting edge graphics at the time of release.
>>12844602Because you're a zoomer larping faggot. Arcades were all dead and gone before you were even swimming around in your daddies ballsack.
>>12843854>Short and fun gamesyes but I also want to play long games, like Super Metroid or FFV or whatever.it's the 90's if people wanted to play something short they'd hit the arcades, there is an arcade at every other corner.
>>12844606>specifically say I don't care about "on a technical level">bring it up anywayYou're an idiot. >But this was literally cutting edge graphics at the time of release. If it doesn't *look* cutting edge then it doesn't matter. > and the reason you're not impressed by it now is because you've seen later stuff and newer consoles which were capable of so much more. I'm in my 40s. I actually played a Neo Geo game as my first 16-bit game ever, in the form of Baseball Stars, followed by league bowling. Before I ever touched a SNES. I thought Super Mario World was much more impressive than those games when I first saw it. During the 90s when I'd look through game magazines sometimes a screenshot of a Neo Geo game would look pretty impressive, but then I'd go play it in the arcade and realize the actual gameplay sucked. I certainly didn't think games like World Heroes were the cutting edge when I saw them. They looked jank, they looked kind of homebrewed compared to what I saw from Nintendo, Capcom, Midway, or Sega.
>>12844621>it doesn't *look* cutting edgeIt does, and I don't understand why you're pretending it doesn't. Do you actually play games from that era?>the actual gameplay suckedThat's a different argument entirely. Most arcade games kinda sucked.
>>12844626There was nothing about Magician Lord, Burning Fight, Baseball Stars, League Bowling, NAM-1975, or Cyber-lip that looked cutting edge by the year 1993.
>>12844635There literally is but your entire argument rests on ignoring technological capability in favor of art style which has absolutely nothing to do with being cutting edge.
>>12843854SNES, NES, and Sega had more games than just Metal Slug, 1v1 fighters, and Zupapa.
>>12844717That's because those were home consoles which every developer at the time was making games for, including SNK. The Neogeo was arcade hardware and was only one out of a dozen other options. And, unlike games on the SNES or genesis, games for the Neogeo were arcade games meant to be played in arcades, not grand RPGs that take dozens of hours to beat.
>>12844751>That's because those were home consolesSo was the AES. And the NGCD.
>>12844654Hence the keyword "looked", dumbass.
>>12844751Doesn't matter to to the consumer. Doesn't matter to a comparison of what each console's library of titles has to offer.
>>12843854>how come? It's games are very good, but the variety is poor
This game looked better than anything on the SNES or Genesis in 1991 but the faggot in this thread is going to pretend it doesn't.
>>12844919I wouldn't consider this game to look better than F-zero.
>>12843854Neo geo at home was almost as rare as buying actual arcade boards and building superguns to play them. And outside of KoF98/2002, Metal Slug and maybe SamSho 2, the library is not that great compared to Capcom, Sega, Konami and Namco arcade offerings.
>>12845016This. Neo Geo is strictly arcade experience but it is generally mid. People want Street Fighter, Marvel, Daytona USA, TMNT or X-Men beat em ups, bullet hell shmups etc. Metal Slug is the only unique NG game that has no good alternatives.
>>12844608>being this mad that nobody else gives a shit about NEOGEO games that aren't Metal Sluglmaoget bent nigger
>>12845016Thereโs def a few more than thatโฆ but letโs stick with kof98/2002, Metal slug, and Sam sho 2. Those games have infinite replayability especially kof98. Also, even if you have a preference for capcom (which I do), the only fighting game touching 98 is third strike or maybe vampire savior. The metal slug series up to 3 are some of the best action games in the genre. Last but not least, even though Sam Sho 2 is a bright spot, later on in the lifecycle last blade 1 and 2 really took weapon based fighting to another level. Take windjammers and Neo turf masters and youโve got a good variety of all timers.
>>12844301It's a full 1/3 of the library. Yes the Neo Geo does have other stuff but fighting games are a substantial portion of it's total lineup and anyone truly interested in the console needs at least a passing interest in the genre to really appreciate the Neo Geo
>>12845652>It's a full 1/3 of the library.Anon, that guys complaint was "most of the Neo Geo library is fighting games" and "just a handful of games from other genres", that is false. >but fighting games are a substantial portion of it's total lineup Like 2/3rds of those fighting games are from like 3 or 4 series that pumped out a bajillion sequels, KoF was a yearly refresh.>and anyone truly interested in the console needs at least a passing interest in the genre to really appreciate the Neo GeoOver 100 games are not fighting games, you can appreciate the Neo Geo just fine with shmups, run and guns, sports, puzzle games and a bunch of other stuff. I would not tell someone who likes arcade games but doesn't care for vs fighters to avoid the system.

>>12843854Most people have greater nostalgia for thos consoles, because most people couldn't afford a NeoGeo. Of course people have nostalgia for arcades, but depending on where you lived and your age, arcade gaming wasn't necessarily a regular thing, and even if it were, it could very well have been in small doses and spread across multiple games. Plus as time went on, more people liked the idea of "home gaming" experiences that were distinct from "arcade gaming" experiences. That's not to say home releases of arcade games weren't popular, just that longer, oftentimes more forgiving games which were intended to be completed over multiple sittings became more popular. You even saw this bleed over to fighting games, with some fighting games adding in stuff like mission modes and character unlock challenges.
You guys keep claiming that nobody cared about the NeoGeo and nobody has nostalgia for it, and yet when SNK announced the AES+ they were expecting it to be a niche thing and then demand was 30x their expectations (their words) and they sold pre-orders beyond what they expected to sell in the first year within hours. And I know you're going to cope and claim those sales were all from thirdies in South America, but the console isn't available to order there. All of the sales have been from people in North America, Europe, and Japan.Clearly people do care about the Neogeo.
>>12846579Its like how millions of more people care about earthbound today than they did when it originally released. Anything formerly scarce and deemed coveted by the deciders on youtube becomes a high demand product, especially the FOMO speculative investors who make up modern collectors. That is all the new vaporware neo geo remake was. If they released a vectex or 3D boy retro machine the retards would all do the same. Failed products have value. CNN and BBC news didnt report on insane lines of consumers trying to buy the affordable neo geo mini, it had no cultural impact at all and the world slept. The product was too cheap and wasnt going to make a good prop for aspiring streamers, and no one else cared enough about neo geo to buy one.

>>12846730>>12846740Yep. AES has long been a staple of stupidly priced collector pieces, and as more and more collectors have entered the game over the years, more and more will naturally want a piece. Announce a relatively affordable new ways to collect "legit" AES products, which will also be unique collector pieces in and of themselves for those who already have original AES collections, of course you will see collectors jump at the opportunity. This isn't primarily an everyman product meant for people to relive their childhood gaming experiences, a la the NES/SNES/Genesis/etc mini consoles, it's a product that's primarily for collectors.

They sold 1 million Neo Geo machines worldwide . That's more than any other arcade cabinet in the entire world. The issue is that SNK made some bad business decisions afterwards that bankrupted the company. Such as the Hyper Neo Geo 64, Neo Geo CD, and building a bunch of multi-million dollar theme parks with roller coasters and rides all over Japan. These 3 failures bankrupted the company.
>>12847547>They sold 1 million Neo Geo machines worldwideAll thanks to the cartridge system and the hardware lifespan of 14 years. What were the individual games sales?
>>12847547Laundromats, a barber shop and some Mexican grocery store were the only places I saw them growing up and it was always just Metal Slug games on them. There's an obvious economical appeal of an arcade platform that runs games off of easily swapped cartridges so it stands to reason that it would be the best seller in a sea of machines dedicated to single games.Their prohibitively expensive to sub-par home console offerings destroyed any chance of having as big of a cultural impact as it could've.
>>12847532mask roms>>12847547>SNK was very influential.brand recognition vs. industry influence are entirely different things. they made a cool platform but years too late but industry didn't change much. many did rip off neogeo's game ideas but not the hardware. great ideas in 1989/90 end up as painful bloat in 1995 as superior hardware was around. 5 year shelf life. that's got to suck. keep releasing more metal slug.. oh wait they did that. never mind.
>>12847370>eating mcdonalds is common so i am not a poor child
>>12847638>many did rip off neogeo's game ideas but not the hardware. Many did. They copied Neo Geo's idea of keeping the same motherboard but havjng swappable cartridges. Before Neo Geo became famous, companies forced arcade operators to buy expensive motherboards with just a single game built into the board that couldn't be changed. Then Neo Geo came out and changed everything.Sega decided to copy the idea with the Sega Titan (STV) arcade hardware.Taito copied it with the Taito F3. Capcom copied it with the CPS-2 and also the CP Changer.IGS copied it with the Polygame arcade board. Sammy copied Neo Geo with the atomiswave arcade board. Midway copied Neo Geo with their T-Unit arcade boards and swappable games. Neo Geo had a huge influence on the arcade landscape.
>>12848067>companies forced arcade operators to buy expensive motherboards with just a single gameThe way most arcades operated you were either leasing or you were returning games for discounts against new games. Having arcade cartridges was hardly unheard of space magic, it's just nobody really thought the benefits were worth it and the devs wanted the freedom to change up the hardware on a per-game basis. But what they discovered is by the 90s the hardware they had was pretty much all the hardware they were allowed to develop. No more pissing $100k up the wall to add another expensive proprietary chip to do one effect in a single game. So swappable roms of some kind became standard. Neo Geo was just ahead of the curve and they got pirated by everyone for their trouble.
>>12848067Another big point of the MVS was that it allowed operators to have multiple games running in a single cab. You could add in new games with less risk, since you didn't necessarily have to remove a dated but still fairly popular game from a cab just to put in the new thing. If Metal Slug were very popular in your 4 slot MVS cab while Neo Drift Out is bombing, you could swap the latter out for the newly released MS2, while keeping MS1 on the list in case people wind up preferring it to the new sequel.
>>12843854It was a niche enthusiast product. Itโs not like you could just walk into K-Mart back in 1992 and find the AES and games on the shelf next to the Nintendo and Sega stuff. You either had to buy it from a specialty retailer or mail order it.
>>12848067>Sega decided to copy the idea with the Sega Titan (STV) arcade hardware.Sega had done that before the Neo Geo with their Mega Tech system
>>12848067>>12848947Data East had the idea long before anyone in the early 80s.
>>12848067>They copied Neo Geo's idea of keeping the same motherboard but havjng swappable cartridges.wasn't their idea. let's see who was first to have a system to load up new games:"DECO Cassette System, introduced by Data East in October 1980">copiedwhat a clown. oh.. you dropped this from your electric wheelchair, drooling spastic:
>>12848067Which youtube lied to you and filled your empty little head with such silly nonsense?
>>12850212no youtube video required. schizos are really that confident being wrong every single day.
>>12843854It was cheaper to play them at the arcade
>>12849259why did they think it was necessary to add an extra cropped image of the clown's face inside a small circle with "nose included" on it? did they think people were too fucking retarded to figure out that the giant red ball was a clown nose? was the one picture of the clown not enough? or, i don't know, just put "nose included' over the actual physical nose? this is like that 'face with a nose" from the plumbers don't wear ties episode of avgn. literally what the fuck were they thinking
>>12852683>schizo still getting absolutely humiliated in his own cringe thread>better start spamming it with nonsense!always embarrassing. always cringe
>>12848067>Many did.really? that's a cool story. it's a shame that never happened.
Might be a stupid thought but what's stopping the spinning up of old ass ancient ram fab tech to make new carts? Surely we could modernize this old ass ram just enough to make new mask ram with better standards to make carts for the upcoming AES PLUS carts since they intend bidirectional compatibility anyway? They specifically stated all the new stuff would work with the old stuff and vice versa and at the very recent event in Tokyo they demonstrated this so I'm confused. Surely such ancient outmoded ram would cost fractions of pennies even in today's economy.
>>12843854Because it was 600 smackers and the carts were like half the price of the console.
>>12855669>Might be a stupid thought but what's stopping the spinning up of old ass ancient ram fab tech to make new carts?Nothing really. We can easily configure modern machines to reproduce obselete chips and ram.The only issue is economics. It made sense in the 1990s to make those old chips in massive quantities for Neo geo carts because it was being sold worldwide for computers and gaming equipment. Neo Geo by itself sold millions. More sales = cheaper to manufacture for the factory. But it does not make economic sense to spend several million dollars to reconfigure modern machines to make old chips if only a few thousand people are buying them. The factory would take a loss. So companies are forced to buy modern chips (or modern replacementd) and adapt them for older games and consoles. If the Neo Geo remake had a few million customers then perhaps the factory would consider it.
