What were they gonna do with a cigarette and a blindfold?
>>12845218I think it's a reference to someone being given a last smoke and then executed.
idk some MacGyver shit
>>12845218It’s a trope for when someone is executed by firing squad ESL-kun
>>12845270>>12845226it's not that mean spirited. get them a blindfold and a cigarette because getting so thoroughly mogged is traumatizing, they need to block it out and smoke a cig to recover.
>>12845274No, they’re gonna execute him with the CGI cannon, it was the era of edgy marketing before everything became wholesome chungus
SQUARESOFT'SABOUT TO MAKEYOU ITS BITCH
This is funny to me precisely because subsequently Nintendo showed with the N64 Zelda games and Rare's stuff that they can handily beat any cutscene bloated CD based game without needing any of the bullshit this was going on about.
>>12845218Reasonable dig at Nintendo desu. N64 showed that carts didn't cut it anymore
Firing squad last request "joke"
>>12845274no its definitely exactly that mean-spiritedits a 90s vidya mag ad>>12845309the only thing the N64 showed anyone is that certain specific devs were way way wayyy better than others at compression cough factor 5 coughcarts ability to quickly access information without load-times wasnt enough to make up for the fact that there just wasnt enough room on carts to fit fully 3D worlds and cutscenes and high quality audio all at once. which is why nintendo then tried to split the difference on the GC, putting games on weird meme disks which were chosen for offering more space, but also shorter load times than CDs.ultimately, kinda stupid, as disk read speed by the time the GC was in circulation, wasnt quite the same hard bottleneck it was when the GC was in development
>>12845327What gamer would have got that at the time
>>12845372The 'joke' is that the gen-X writers of these mag ads got to flex on and come off as ultra-mature to the millennial kids who would be reading this stuff at the time. It'd be like, you'd get that they were referencing something beyond your current knowledge of the world, but anything involving cigs and a blindfold would have to be hardcore.
>>12845372All of them. It was a common thing.
>>12845372Back then we shot traitors before brekkie
>>12845401
>>12845372It was imagery we saw in archival war footage, of prisoners/deserters being lined up with blindfolds and cigarettes hanging from their mouths. Also I'm pretty sure a bunch of old cartoons used that imagery.
>>12845218Does anyone have a high quality scan of this stitched together?
>>12845417Best I have is this AI abomination!
>>12845440Thanks anon, wish SE would sell a poster of this print
>>12845309>the N64 Zelda gamesZelda came out practically 2 years after FF7. That was an eternity in the late 90s videogame years. Ocarina was released around the same time as Half-Life. And Ocarina plays like a shitty jank ancient 3D game today, with awkward camera controls.
>>12845443Just resize and print it!
>>12845479Thanks anon! Could you move the text together at the bottom? I know it's split for magazine print but on a poster it's kinda odd
>>12845485alright
>>12845494Hell yeah, thanks anon. Gonna go to a local print shop and see what they can do
>>12845218Now that the gimmick of cutscenes has worn off, I think we can all agree that they were a mistake to include in gaming.
$10.000 back then if on putrid cartridges
>>12845274>>12845372Just assume you're stupid next time
>>12845512There’s a lot more than just cutscenes, buddy. In this specific comparison, even the HUD/UI elements had to be simplified on the N64 version, because every byte was precious. Developers had to sacrifice even a damn sprite on the screen just to allocate it elsewhere. This is how retrograde the N64 was.
>>12845512>I think we can all agree that they were a mistake to include in gaming.No. they definitely extended what was possible in games of that time and allowed artists the freedom to do interesting things that wouldn't be possible in just he game world itself. They aren't strictly necessary, and can be nicely avoided in ways that can benefit the more clever devs, but they're a very cool possibility to have available so long as the game doesn't become about them.
Execution.
>>12845382>It'd be like, you'd get that they were referencing something beyond your current knowledge of the world, but anything involving cigs and a blindfold would have to be hardcore. They were giving bugs bunny a cigarette and blindfold for his firing squad execution back in the 1940s. You'd have to be quite sheltered not to get the joke.
>>12845218Was there ever a game that shipped on multiple cartridges? The Resident Evil 2 N64 port managed to squeeze a 2cd game onto a single 64mb cartridge just kinda curious what would be the absolute minimum size FF7 could be compressed down to . Could a 2 or 3 cartridge game even work even it would be extremely expensive to make?
>>12845218It's a neurotypical thing, they have this beat-around-the-bush way of expressing themselves that they think is super clever, but only makes their shit sound nonsensical. Especially common in American media.
>>12845609>someone please unalive nint*ndo
>>12845626>I will lash out against modern basedspeak, in the context of 90's advertising, for no reason at all
>>12845598>managed to squeeze a 2cd game onto a single 64mb cartridgeDo you think this happens out of nowhere? It takes a significant investment of resources and manpower to optimize every element of the game, making it as small as possible while simultaneously preserving some quality.>>12845518Imagine how many of these games wouldn't exist if developers had to focus on retarded levels of optimization and limitations instead of using that time to desige and develop more games.
>>12845609Tell us how you really feel about foids and chads.
>>12845598Closest might be Sonic 3 + Sonic and Knuckles. I'm not aware of any games that shipped as multiple carts in one package. Hardware costs were a considerable part of the budget for publishers and Nintendo in particular made everyone do everything through them. If a game required two separate carts it would be double the price.Another oddity is Banjoo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. I don't the exact details but one of Rare's ideas was to remove the BT cart and plug in BK while the game was running in order to access a secret area. They had a working concept but Nintendo shut it down because unsafe.
>>12845662That reminds me of that X-Men game on the Genesis that required the player to physical hit the reset button on the console to continue past a certain level.
>>12845662didnt conker bfd have a gigacart that was extra big but just cost more? i guess like sd cards of today
>>12845270every brown ESL knows this from Tom & Jerry
>>12845226Why does this thread have posts. Why didn't everyone just make fun of OP and leave
>>12845659I was just curious if it could actually be done. The development of FF7 was a significant reason for Square abandoning Nintendo and led to.the N64 severely lacking in rpgs. What sort of compromises or changes would really be necessary to actually get FF7 playable on N64 hardware? The FMV stuff obviously took a lot of space but even without it how small could the game get to feasible fit on a cartridge?
>>12846495nta but ff7 is 250mb minus fmvs, they'd have to give it the mega man legends -> 64 texture downgrade then the forced bilinear filtering would smear everything. they'd have to animate the fmvs in-engine. the stick figure field models might not cut it. even the magic and summons have a lot of bitmap effects. prerendered games just don't work on n64
>>12846678also square tried to bloat the assets to use as much cdrom space as possible, it wasn't intuitive to do all that for ps1 just to downcompress everything to n64 in the end
>>12845598RE2 N64 might as well be a remake in terms of time and money thrown at it. No sane studio would make an n64 game on ps1 design principles knowing there's a possibility of having to throw out half the assets during the downsizing stage that might push the release forward a year. And that's on a game that might flop.
>>12845401>Canadian execution linewtf?
>>12846495ques64 shows how putrid it would be
>>12845327Why the quotes?
>>12845401>Execution of a German Communist in Munich 1919
>>12845551>press x to not die!!!
>>12847386The fuck does that have to do with what I'm talking about.
>>12845845Apparently not
>>12845541That's beyond pathetic. Surely, it wasn't the N64's fault and they were just shit devs.
>>12845372people were a lot smarter back then before TikTok brainrot
>>12845372Every single gamer over the age of 10. It's not that deep zoomie. FF7 was about to kill the competition with the ultimate game.
>>12847490It's not explicitly the n64's fault as much as it's nintendo's fault and the cartridges fault but really it's emblematic of the n64 era so just accept the shorthand.
>>12845218Why, duh!BDSM sex and cigarettes!Obvs
>>12845327the quotes on "joke" makes you so gay and lame, omfg you are such a virtue signaling chungus transvestite you are such a "woman"
>>12845541That's absurdly incorrect. The N64 has issues with cart space and the T-buf which are well discussed, but HUD elements? That's such fucking chump change you aren't making any difference to your rendering budget by simplifying them. No, the real reason the HUDs are different is because back then port jobs were a LOT rougher than today. You weren't just using a common source pool and giving it a few modifications for the target hardware, you were working on multiple wholly separate parallel development trees and keeping an eye on what the other team were doing to see what you could nab. Sometimes you had to make your own shit because the PS1 team hadn't pushed their updates and your milestone needed HUD elements to sign off so you just fucking got your artist to draw something and the programmers to slap it in. And then because no one cared it never gets "fixed."In the case of FF7 it's well documented that Squaresoft were just fucked off with Nintendo, the carts were just the final straw. Had Nintendo gone with CDs and not nerfed the N64 from the SGI spec they very very likely would STILL have fucked of to Sony because Nintendo in the 90s were just that fucking terrible to deal with. Programmers are bottom of the org chart, if Squaresoft had signed on for the N64 they would have been told to suck it up and make it work.
>>12845218I love ads that age poorly. Let it be a lesson anons, never spit above you cause that shit will come down on your face
>>12845315Turns out it was just 30 years ahead of its time
how did they calculate for the $1,200 figure?50 cartridges?
>>12845218at first I read the ad as specifically calling for and setting the execution in motion, and it seemed really heinous. rethinking it they're just preparing the n64 for what the release of final fantasy is inevitably going to do, not so bad.
>>12845401pepperony and cheasehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8simZ9mut4Q
>>12847341>>12847984I put the quotes there because I personally do not get the joke despite fully understanding the reference being made. You usually shoot your OWN MEN via firing squad as a form of morale-strengthening justice, or a traitor that you captured serving the enemy.CDs were moving on past carts, so it would be more like the cartridge makers shooting themselves in the head a la Eva and Hitler when the walls are finally closing in and their time has run out.
>>12848884You forgot enemy infiltrators wearing your uniform.
