I think I need to curb my autism. So i'm messing around with need for speed II SE (which means PC for the uninitiated) and an element of it running on modern hardware is the choice between having either the original, software render style visuals or the fancy 3DFX look. Now it is up for debate which is the intended look (for a frame of reference the psx version is much closer to the pc software look) but one aspect that is clear is the software mode textures are higher quality than the 3dfx ones but have the downside of being only 256 colours which at modern resolutions and on a flat panel looks rough. Where my autism is now kicking in is i'm fucking about with reshade to provide some sort of effect to smooth out the harsh transitions in colour 256 colours provides without it being a pure vaseline filter for the whole image.

My starting point is the easymode crt filter but without actually simulating a lower resolution as the blending effect it offers seems to be doing the job albeit with a slight colour tone shift (looks like going from warm -> cool which isn't bad and looks a lot like my psx version running on an actual crt in this specific regard) but I can see myself spending an unnecessary amount of time dialling in the specific values to ultimately try and overcome a limitation that realistically can only be "fixed" by replacing the textures entirely but hey ho.
