The Saturn wasn't popular here either but it was the first console I saw that shopped with a high quality connection out of the box. Everything before that like the Mega Drive and SNES had used RF.

I'll give them some credit in that SOME games very much have graphics and effects which deliberately aims for the blending of a CRT, it's not all imaginary.

But just FUCKING-
>arcade cabinets using RGB CRTs and thus having way less blending
>the way the human eye and mind is actually capable of blending dithering effects, even with sharp pixels, as long as you aren't sitting with your face a foot from the screen
>the "pixels were never meant to be seen as squares!" faggots ignoring the LCD screens on the Game Boy and Wonder Swan
>or the hardly unseen pixelated graphics for console games and arcade games sometimes being shown off in media and marketing (like the goddamn early black label NES games)
>the way many early 3D games or scaling effects would plain give you big and blocky pixels even with composite
>the flagrant picking and choosing between if a graphic based on a larger resolution illustration was totally-totally supposed to be blended, like the fucking skeleton, or Dracula's "teeth" and eyes
>the fact that TVs and computer monitors were not a complete monolith, and that sizes, resolutions, and connections, did in fact fucking vary even during the 1990s, and that things like SCART wasn't rare or "richfag shit"
>the fact that devs knew things like these
>the indecision on if filters are good or not

>the fact that devs knew things like these
Reading interviews of devs from back then, seeing them reminiscent about their old art on Twitter, or just plain old looking at the games they made it quickly becomes blatantly obvious that video game art in the CRT-era was a god damn clusterfuck
Non-standard aspect ratios, pixel blending, artifacting caused by cheap composite encoders, optimizing color for japanese vs non-japanese TVs, various flavors of flicker fixers etc.
All used, abused or entirely neglected in various ways. Sometimes even by different artists on the same game, most easily seen in some SNES games where there's a mixture of art that is optimized and not-optimized for its weird aspect ratio.
>>
>>12848443
It really was an absolute wild west, and that's pretty beautiful in its own way. Generally speaking, I think that all of the best pixel art ever made in those eras still looks excellent even without any blending applied, it's all very well made and still strongly conveys what's intended.

I think that to make that stuff truly look bad, you would have to apply actually bad and ugly blending, like linear filters (always looks catastrophic at a low resolution), or something like Super Eagle.
>>
>>12848437

Bilinear was fine for the N64 because native N64 games were all REALLY designed around it, and it's a prerequisite for how N64 games do a lot of its texturing.

Turning off this filtering for an N64 game usually makes it look very shitty. Some people still don't like bilinear filtering at all, but I really think it can't be argued that stretching and blowing out a low resolution texture like this was never meant to be seen without heavy blending.
Forcing his kind of filtering onto an NES game also makes it look very shitty, as this doesn't give you the much more natural blending of a Composite or SCART image.
>>
>>12847507
Scat fags are why many old games got a shitty rep.
Seriously, fuck france and uk SHITASS tv signals.
>>
>>12848851
This is the most retarded thing I've read in my life. Your battery back up is keeping a save file on SRAM in your cart dumb ass.
>>
>>12847605
RGB was common in arcades because the games ran in hires, and second that composite or svideo adapters were expensive and it would make cabinets expensive, rgb was cheap and fitting for arcades.

Still doesnt remove the fact that arcade still looks nice on composite or svideo.
>>
>>12848108
Those games werent even sharp, you always had soft pixels due to shadowmask monitors.
Fucking starcraft and fallout had superb visuals on it.
>>
>>12848876

>>12848973
composite le way its meant to be prayed for consoles. PC monitors for clear pixels and text... at least after the mid-late 1980s games. simple ass that for me
>>
>>12847760
honestly I like the look still not because it looks good or authentic in any way but because it looks like an old analog recording that you'd see on news segments talking about the game or 2006 era youtube videos
>>
>>12847760
I see both pros and cons here.
>>
>>12848862
People who say this always use those same two examples in OoT, which are shit only because the architecture is sloped.

Most cases don't have extreme cherrypicked examples like this and most games have higher resolution textures too. Unfiltered is fine in most N64 games I've played because they don't have shitty textures like OoT.
Usually the bilinear filtering is there to hide the low resolution behind blur rather than having visual effects that only appear with bilinear on.

Duck Hunt is alright for some quick occasional fun, so is Hogan's Alley. It's more the ambitious titles like Lone Ranger and V.I.C.E. Project Doom, where you have intermittent segments for lightgun shooting which I think would be fucking tits to try out.
But also I kinda want a second TV anyway, because it gets inconvenient to try to hook up my old NES and N64 to the TV that I already have my PS3 and PS4 set up by, so the CRT would be a convenient place for those two.
