Game file size used to be a marketing standpoint. Sega did it too.
>>12846932>Game file size used to be a marketing standpoint.people were informed of what cart sizes were but it wasn't marketing. it was general information.>posts screenshot stolen from another website>same file name as usualfuck off, spamming retard. did you run out snes screenshots to post or do you keep getting banned these days?
>>12847049>it wasn't marketingSega stamped it all over their boxes to brag about how big their games were, and SNK ran an entire 100 MEGA SHOCK advertising campaign. It was absolutely a marketing tactic, no different from Sega's "blast processing">Schizophrenic babbleMeds
>>12846932Sounds like an easy thing to game>600 MB of Adventure!!!>50 MB of game, 50 MB of assets and several encrypted archives of Microsoft BOB
Only for console kiddies.
>>12847049>it wasn't marketinghttps://youtube.com/watch?v=wxrACWQvzHw
>>12847156No, SNK used it and they were an arcade hardware manufacturer.
>>12847241They made a home system that was marketed as an arcade machine, strangely. And a number of CD-ROM variants of that for home use. And two handhelds for kids. An interesting footnote in history, but nothing worth spending money on today.
>>12847256They made an arcade system for arcade machines which was sold to arcade operators. They later made a rental version for home use, and after receiving letters from customers requesting to buy one despite the high price they decided to give it a limited retail release.
>>12847256no retro console is worth spending money on because mister
>>12847154Then you're paying more for bigger expensive carts you don't need
>>12846932User age requirement used to be a posting standpoint
>>12847182Like always, zoomgroids have absolutely no fucking idea what they're talking about. You don't hate broccoli niggers enough.
>>12847149>a splash screen that gets displayed if neogeo bios detects a certain cart is an advertising campaignyep. this board is cringe.>no different from Sega's "blast processing">blast processing>is same as mbits on a cartso.. according to schizos, displaying the capacity of a rom chip in any way is.. marketing? yeah, schizo cringe to the extreme
it still is nowadays, if your game is bloated to fuck then I don't buy it
They stopped doing it because of the shift to discs, where every console game now had 700MB of storage per disc. It made more sense when it was variable.
>>12846932Some of the smaller games I'm shocked how much they crammed in there like Thunder Force 2 or Castlevania 4 and then you have stuff like the Acclaim simpsons games which are larger but full of repeating tiles. Apogee shareware games had it in their text files too.>>12847149Compare super tennis to wonder boy, there is a direct correlation in size to graphics and level size that was noticeable even back then.
>>12847306the cost of the cart is offset by the number of units sold.
Because back then, game consoles didn't have hard drives or anything, you put the cart in and that was your game, maybe a CD (and the one thing stored was your save game on a card), obviously bigger was better as there was no negative side effect to such. Now since everything installs to be on a hard diive/SSD or something, it's less exciting to hear that a game is fuck huge. They don't really market such anymore, it's just something they inform with no real fanfare, and everyone who pays attentions groans at yet another Multiplayer FPS weighing in at triple digit gigs for no real reason other than "Fuck compression!".
>>12850870Also as far as console games were concerned, it wasn't "File size", it was rom size, and more rom meant a bigger and/or more beautiful game.
>>12850870the game cart itself was a hard drive, as well as additional memory and processors. it was essentially a hardware expansion you could hotswap.
>>12850884Yeah, but it's not like it was meant to be permanently in your console and store other shit besides the game and saves
