Why were there so many bad PC ports when games are made on PCs?
>>
>>12847568
There were made for libraries that didn't exist on PCs. They had to test their code on actual hardware (ie a devkit)
>>
I haven't seen many bad PC ports. But sometimes they're outsourced 5 times finally to a malaysian or thai company on a budget of 5 bowls of rice with a deadline of 3 weeks.
>>
>>12847568
Because pcfags don't have any stantards.
>>
>>12847580
And consolefags do?
>>
>>12847583
Yes console hardware where standardized to a single spec>>12847583
>>
There are more good PC ports than bad PC ports. Bad PC ports are mostly a thing of the 00's, at which point the number of PC ports decreased anyway.

We've had the exact same thread at least twice before so OP is probably a bot. This particular thread is designed to be a disingeneous, false premise, console warring bullshit.
>>
>>12847568
>games are made on PCs
what do you think they have console dev kits for? what an idiot
>>
>>12847814
it's not common knowledge exactly
>>
>>12847615
ports are never good
>>
>>12847568
>1980's
Because PC's weren't designed to render scrolling graphics and generally not powerful enough to bruteforce them in software.
>1990's
Because console hardware was drastically different from PC hardware at the time, and making code for consoles work on PC was often easier said than done, especially when the source code is thrown out at some point between the original and the port.
>2000's
PC and console hardware were still very different, and because PC sales paled in-comparison to console sales the PC versions were often farmed out to shovelware and slav devs that didn't have the budget or resources to produce a good port.
>2010's-Present
The gap between console and PC hardware has narrowed significantly, but problems still arise often due to over reliance on shitty middleware like Unreal Engine and lazy devs implementing half-assed solutions to rampant modern rendering problems like shader compilation.
>>
They didn't give a shit about PC back then, whether it was piracy bogeyman, support headaches or both. Console gaming market overshadowed the PC market by a wide margin, a lot of games just didn't get onto PC period, even games from PC franchises like Midtown Madness 3.

Why are there so many retarded underage shitposts when shitposts are made by retarded underage shitposters?

>PC and console hardware were still very different
Only the PS2. Xbox and GameCube used PC architectures, and in the case of Xbox even a lot of Windows libraries

DevKit and console hardware is not equal a regular windows pc and its hardware.
Also, PCfags have always been piracyfags, which is why many devs haven't put much effort into translating and adapting console games for PC.
>>
>>12848849
It was still custom even if the GCN and Xbox had similarities to PC architecture.
>>
A PC does not mean a Microsoft software computer.
A gameboy is a PC, a macbook is a PC. Just because it has game engine software on it does not make it not a PC.
PC is personal computer (as opposed to terminals running off of a shared computer).
>>
>>12848967
True, I always get annoyed when people use PC gaming as a blanket term when what they usually mean is Windows/Steam gaming.
>>
>>12848975
IBM compatible used to be the correct terminology for what eventually became Windows computers. Apple or course was always it's own thing as was Commodore,Atari and others. IBM compatible stuff gradually just became the default for the term PC though as most of the old computers lines began disappearing
>>
>>12848967

ROFLMAO'ing @ you fucking poseurs for playing games on PCs instead of terminals. I'm behind seven proxies you faggots

Imo it always feels on purpose, like sabotage

The real story goes down to the fact the fact that when PC's existed most people primarily thought of them for productivity purposes not really for Gaming, and they thought Gaming Consoles were for Gaming not PC's. PC's were not as powerful in the 1980's as Consoles, but by the early 1990's as Processing power became better and PC parts became a commodity, things had changed overall because there was now a reason to go for high end PC specs, mid-range or lower. The only issue with this in the 90's unfortunately was the lack of standardization with Codec Audio, Game API and various other things. In the 90's most games were simple and made to work on everything, but some games had to account for Voodoo and NVIDIA and various other sound cards. This was why there was bad PC Ports or things that ran very poorly while most had performed really well overall. Thanks to DirectX and various other things starting to come together under a consortium it became easier to make games with various different parts. By the late 00's and early 2010's it became virtually plug and play with UE,Unity and everyone else without having to account for everything overall. Which I would argue has lead to widespread adoption of PC's, Steam and Indies.
>>
>>12848863
Piracy only existed because there was a market for games in E.Europe and in various other ones, but because of a lack of regional pricing and getting everything translated day and date, dedicated people would translate the game, host it on a site for people to pirate on. Piracy continues to this day, but not like it was back then. If it was true today the market would not be in PC but on Console.
>>
>>12849398
>batshit rant
Get well soon
>>
>>12849398
>Piracy continues to this day, but not like it was back then
That's because modern games not only suck, but half of them have to phone home when you start the thing.
>>
It's all rushed, they give you dogshit asian assembly from a machine abandoned before the game went gold and you're tasked with converting the gpu chip code to directx in 2 months, then assemble/compile so that it runs on every Windows 95 driver configuration.
>>
For some reason japs start throwing all the assets into a bonfire the second the thing ships. They had to stop doing that around the PSP era after they saw competitors recompiling their PS2 games for it.
>>
>>12847568
>>12847574
Fpbp
Lots of consoles used processors that had different instruction sets, different graphical capabilities and palettes, and each often had different hardware support for different graphical effects like scrolling and scaling.
When someone says a game was programmed in assembly it means it was designed uniquely using the machines processor's specific instruction set, and not a standardized language like C++ or C# that game engines use today, that are translated to machine instruction with more overhead. Engines for 5th gen often were in C though, so that's why you started to see more multiplats moving forward and more PC ports especially the 7th generation on.
So you couldn't just take a console game's code and run it on PC, or vise versa, it needed large rewrites.
>>
Because PC is office equipment and there's like a billion different parts.

Shit's only good for internet, doing a paper and presentations, but you need a damn console with your computer to properly make games with it.

Otherwise you can have fun troubleshooting for hours like a retard.
Never putting myself through this bullshit because I'm a console/handheld man only.
>>
>>12850335
I liked PC gaming though before the 2000's when it had it's own identity and ecosystem of games. Adventure games,RTS,CRPGs,Flight Sims and FPS were all staples of computer gaming. The games were designed for the hardware and worked well with it. Consoles did their own thing and were a good alternative for a different kind if gaming. Everything is just homogenized now and it's boring
>>
>>12847568
Assets made on pc = pc version. Usually they compile some testing version for a machine close to the target platform, but it could be Mac, for example
>>
>>12850335
>Never putting myself through this bullshit because i'm literally to retarded to type in a tic tac toe game
I'm a console/handheld child only.
>>
>>12847580
>pcfags don't have any stantards.

Nigga PC fags these days don't even buy budget PCs.
>>
>>12847568
I remember being annoyed with switching keybinds, a game defaulted a button to fkn Backspace and I just want it to be something else.
I'm not even sure which 3rd party program will let me temporarily swap the backspace with a different letter, even though I think it should be pretty simple in mid 2020's for a program to do something like this.
>>
>>12848849
Xbox being very similar to PC caused even shittier ports!
Splinter Cell 1 to this day has fucked up shadows because it was built specifically to make use of the Geforce 3 specific features found in the Xbox GPU. Unfortunately Nvidia themselves deprecated those features on PC starting with the Nvidia 6000-series.
MGS2 is another infamously shit PC port. It was so heavily reliant on those same Nvidia-specific features that the launch version literally could not boot on any non-Geforce GPU. The developers were forced to quickly put out an ATI patch.
>>
>>12850335
there are two kinds of games: action games and adventure games

for action
>arcade > handheld > console > pc
for adventure
>pc > console > handheld > arcade

in the war between action and adventure, action dominates the sales figures (gun and ball is pure action) but adventure dominates the mainstream reviews (walking sims are a lobotomized form of interactive fiction games)
>>
>>12849683
Until one day when the game can no longer "phone home" and you're stuck with constant connection errors in your single-player game.
