Imagine:>one of these desks from Ikea>A monitor mounted in the back>Some kind of bezel around the monitor to fill up the blank space>A MiSTer as the brain, running a bunch of arcade cores>Some kind of decorative banner up top, which basically just serves to cover up a pair of nice speakers>A really nice arcade stick on top of the desk (sitting up top, not mounted into the desk). Something with a large weighted body, plenty of buttons, and a really nice stick. This is my idea for a home arcade setup. I figure, it would be easy to do, and it wouldn't look atrocious like those home made arcade machines that everyone was making 10 years ago. But what do you guys think, is this a retarded idea?
Example using AI
Actually sounds like a fun contraption if done right. But I'd say you better should mount the arcade stick into the table with only the stick and the buttons being visible, maybe remove its casing for that so you have more freedom in placing it. This would look way cooler than just putting the whole thing on top.
>>12847586>>12847589Honestly, not an awful idea for a DIY arcade setup on the cheap. Ain't flashy, but it fulfills the functional purpose. Maybe at some later point you could paint the thing up and make your own little lit up "ARCADE" sign to sit on the top shelf or something.
>>12847594What if you want to play a game that requires a different control scheme, like Arkanoid or something?
>>12847598>sign to sit on the topThere's this project for the MiSTer where you plug a raspberry pi into it, and then an extra display into that, and it will update the display to show the marquee image for whatever arcade game you're playing. I was thinking maybe get one of those meme bar displays that people normally mount onto PC cases, and put that up on the top shelf in the center. I'll need to put some speakers somewhere, so maybe put those on the edges of the top shelf with the display for the marquee image between them. It wouldn't be super pretty but I think it would be neat.
>>12847609If you're looking for really straightforward simplicity, just putting a good multi-purpose arcade stick on that little desk would really do just fine. Then maybe put in a shelf space or two below where you can keep a couple of other styles of controllers, like a trackball one, or a race driver wheel.Almost said lightgun, but I don't know if there's really any good solutions for that for flat screens yet, and the screen almost seems a bit small for it to be truly fun.I guess if there's enough space left underneath, you could put like, a bed for a cat or small dog or something on the floor, IDK.
>>12847619That sounds pretty good.
>>12847586>Is this retarded?Yes.>ImagineDon't need to. Thirdies have been doing that for decades. Imagine being so poor and retarded that you """invent""" something other other poor retards have been doing since before you were born.
>>12848253>Yes.It's a simple poorfag arcade setup. It sure lacks the glamor of a proper cabinet and all, but if all you want is the games themselves and don't care about the cabinet, it'd give you that.>Imagine being so poor and retarded that you """invent""" something But did he actually say that he invented it and that it was born of his genius? He's outright just floating an idea and asking for input on it.
>>12847586>>12847589Honestly sounds pretty comfy. If you're into 3D printing and printing stickers/decals you probably could decorate it a bit. Hell, if you don't want to fuck with that but have some artistic knack you probably could grab waterproof markers and some paints, instead.
>>12848253>NOOOO, YOU CANNOT CREATE THINGS! BUY SHIT, BUY SLOP, BUY MORE JUNK! BUYING IS FOR CHADS, CREATING IS FOR THIRDIES! POOR, POOR, POOR! AARRRGHHH YOU'RE SO POOR! AHAHAHA! AHAHAHHAHA! AHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!!
>>12848253>why build thing just for fun when you can just buy thingI think you are the thirdy when you can't grasp the concept of building something just for the heck of it.Will it be better than an actual arcade machine? Of course not. But op will have fun building it and maybe even learns a new thing or two while doing so.
>>12848253Cons:>mildly ghetto>not as cool as an oldschool cabinet with lights and artwork>Paul Kersey would never shoot it up with an M16>LCD, if that's important to youPros:>takes up way less space>not nearly as much money or work as building or buying a full cabinet>still plays the games
>>12847589My only issue is that it would be too llw for standing arcade use, as ot is built for office chair height. No room for 2 players if chairs are used. Its like the 1up machines are too low even with their little riser. This desk would need some kind of riser to reach a useable height.
>>12848327I would like one ofnthese powered standing desks that are height adjustable, with OP's monitor backing built in. They have a nice mirror white finish and are way more comforable.
>>12847589Find some other crappy ikea desk or shelf to use as a riser unless you jusy plan on sitting anyway. But you're onto something. I support this endeavor. Much better than half the gay shit posted here daily.
>>12848253Omg anon you're such a faggot holy shit stfu
>>12847586a CHAIR with a drawer under it? No that's a fucking brilliant idea. Thjank you OP.
>>12847589You really needed AI for that 10 second MS paint copy-and-paste job? Other than that, yes, I guess that would work fine if you aren't going for a realistic cabinet replica.
>>12848368Careful you don't sit on it while naked.
>>12848378For a throwaway thing like this, I can't be mad at it, he's not calling himself an artist for it on Xitter.
>>12848378seethe
>>12847586Too performative, just buy a nice desk where you an put a monitor and mr at and play it
>>12847586microcenter sells arcade cab kits you can fill with whatever you want
>>12847586This has been done many times by various people. But it comes with a quickly obvious problem: it's not very stable. The desk will wobble side to side and the arcade stick will slide around on top of the desk. And the angle and distance from the screen is going to be wrong if you use the set-up in your image.First of all, I suggest a CRT. If you can't use a CRT I recommend searching for a monitor which is known to have the lowest input latency and best response time you can, with a 4:3 image over 24" in size. This would be a 30" 16:10 monitor or a 32" 16:9 monitor. Or you can be spendy and buy an actual 4:3 monitor from Arcooda. These big monitors will add weight to the desk. But you'll want to add *more* weight to the desk or literally bolt it to the floor. And you'll want additional rigidness to the desk. You can do that buy adding some metal braces to each of the joints. And you can add weights by bolting a 45 lb barbell plate to the side of the desk or whatever other solution you want, but you'll want the extra weight. To keep the stick from sliding around, what you can do is drill a hole through the top of the flat surface, and then drill a in the bottom of your arcade stick and install a threaded insert. The you can bolt your arcade stick to the desk from underneath with a wing nut. When you're not using it you can remove the arcade stick and still use it anywhere as normal.
>>12848746>The desk will wobble side toanon...
>>12848746>install a threaded insert.what you'd really want to do is just drill the hole in the arcade stick bottom panel, then attack a nut to it with jb-weld. The strength of the jb-weld would be more than enough to stand up to any amount of jostling. And it would create zero protruding parts. When you're not using it you could just cover it with a piece of tape.
>>12848761That's what I suggested if you read the rest of the post, dummy. >And you'll want additional rigidness to the desk. You can do that buy adding some metal braces to each of the joints
>>12847589How are you going to rotate your monitor for vertical games?
I'll post some set-ups.
>>12848770i'm sorry. to make it up to you, i will have google summarize all posts more than 1 sentence long
>>12848746> I recommend searching for a monitor which is known to have the lowest input latency and best response time you can, with a 4:3 image over 24" in size. This would be a 30" 16:10 monitor or a 32" 16:9 monitor. Or you can be spendy and buy an actual 4:3 monitor from Arcooda. For mister setups another thing thats important is variable refresh rate. having a 420hz gamer monitor doesnt help you if its not variable refresh rate, a 49-65hz vrr will outperform it on mister. because cores can lock the refresh rate of the monitor to the hz of its core. so your 57hz gbc core or 50hz amiga or 60.02 hz nes will all look better than they would on a locked 240hzso the end result is the screen that is ideal becomes somewhat unintuitive. I am building a portable mister setup and the meta there is to use a 10" retina lcd, the ones that were used in ipad 3. it checks all the boxes, and it is integer scaled 4:3 and can easily be rotated to tate mode. a problem with even crt's is no tate mode. it costs $50-60 on aliexpress. the only issue is the size and some of the microcontrollers on aliexpress dont let it do 50hz anymore, so you need to double check with the seller if you need that refresh rate. a lot of people used this screen to build all-in-one mini arcade cabs, sort of like OP but much smaller
>>12848746>>12848763The stick I use has a metal base and rubber feet. It's not going anywhere.
>>12848792You're absolutely right. Because once you're getting into building a dedicated set-up you *will* start to want to actually play the games at their correct refresh rates to get the correct speed without having to use a doubled mode (which will create blur) or a turning off v-sync (which will create tearing). Arcade games are hard enough without artificially speeding them up to 60hz.
>>12848797Try it anyway, as you'll see that you had trained yourself to hold back all along. For the sharpest play you want to be able to get rough with the stick.
>>12847586I can respect the effort and idea. At $70USD, the Micke is a decent starting point. Work up the C&C and 3D printing skills before committing to a real Viewlix. You can utilize your own preferred sound system, integrate in an Arcooda and Retrotink4k, print out high quality wraps for artwork, etc and really make it shine. Your method is a lot more affordable than the next step up I can picture, around $700USD, the Qanba 2009 table: https://youtu.be/v1plHwcR4s8If I ever earn enough to have my own place, I hope to have room to do similar experiments and skill ups to have my own area for a home arcade cabinet: https://youtu.be/Ef67LkKRqPU
>>12848327Maybe op is a dwarf and wants to fulfill his life-long dream of an arcade that fits his size
>>12848820Now this pic goes hard.
>>12848260>>12848316>>12848320>>12848342Underage brown thumbs tapped these seething copeposts
Sounds comfy op. Go for it. Don't let the turd worlders and trannies tell you otherwise. Its much better then arguing about filters and ai translations.
>>12848378>tranny badly painted nails typed this post
I just made something similar to what OP wanted. A really shitty version of it.The joystick is too low and moves too much, definitevly it should be part of the desk instead of something external
>>12848827>If I ever earn enough to have my own placeWith the huge collection you have I would have sworn that you had your own place. Now I'm shocked to find out that you don't even have your own marble countertop.
>>12848380>>12848384>>12848904>Autistic screeches about thinking this is an anti-ai post instead of a "It would have taken less time and effort to do this in 10 seconds in MS Paint" post.Guess I should not be surprised that retards are protecting their own kind
>>12848327Put it on a riser and bring in a couple of bar stools.
>>12848954I'm not even defending widespread AI use (I think it should probably generally be restricted to professional programmers), but I also think the difference for the purposes of the thread are so immaterial that I don't see the purpose in even complaining about it. It was the bar napkin and pen he had available at the moment.
