Do anyone here collect players guides? Is that considered cheating? It tells you exactly what to do half the time.
>>12847730>Is that considered cheating? Yes, you retard.
I do when i find em for cheap. Rarest i have would be probably the Earthbound one.
>>12847730I had some Prima guides back in the day, most of them came with magazine subscriptions, I also got Game Over by David Sheff that way
>>12847785>David SheffThat's the guy that made up the Miyamoto quote about Donkey Kong Country, right?
>>12847754It depends. How much is left to execution? If someone tells you what to do in chess, you are not even playing the game, moving the pieces is barely participating. If you're pretending to play it against someone else, you are literally cheating. If someone tells you what to in football, good luck kicking the ball hard or far and accurately enough, let alone interpreting the instructions in a way that actually helps you.I would say individual videogames probably fall somewhere in that range. Some games will probably be just as fun after you know all the secrets and the exact order of execution. They may even be more fun.I imagine zelda is the sort of game where the exploration is more fun than the action, thoughbut even then you are only cheating yourself out of a better experience
>>12847730You didn’t beat the game
>>12847730If you don't use official guides you literally didn't beat the game
>>12847730I had a dream last night I found an old pokemon guidebook but it was filled with scribbles and weird writing. This thread just made me remember that.
>>12847730The thing for me is that none of these guides really provide interesting or high-level advice, it's just some guy telling you how he played the game and that you should do the same, which I don't want. I think you guys just like looking at pictures or you have some materialistic fetish for displaying your interests through physical merchandise.
>>12848085The japanese guidebooks were 100% completion with hand holding the whole way. Japanese guidebook sales were also exponentially higher than they were in the west, even to this day many japanese instinctively buy the guidebook for all new game purchases, even for straight forward easy games. Its like a cultural expectation, and guidebooks evolved to also include concept art and guest artist illustrations for added value. Japanese guidebooks frequently emerged as the top selling books in the entire country when hit games came out (outselling the hit manga and normalfag books with ease). To this day the first big super mario guidbook remains one of the best selling publications in japans history. Nintendo power and other offical stuff in the west deliberately kept stuff vague in the guides and still allowed room for players to explore and experiment. They focused mostly on the areas people would get completely stuck on, and put markings on maps but overall much less handholding. Pic related is the famicom Xevious guidebook. You cant get a more straightforward shooter than this game and it still had a top selling guidebook.
>>12848167nah xevious is not straightforward at all. there are secrets every corner. game freak got its origins with the xevious issue of satoshi tajiri's shmup guide doujin. sugimori saw it and hit him up because the drawings were ass and it went from there. the implementation of mew rumors, which is what started pokemania in japan, were based on xevious and the creators of pokemon are on record saying "if there was no xevious, there would never be pokemon"
>>12848085>it's just some guy telling you how he played the game and that you should do the sameYou could say that about the shit on GameFAQs too, it's just more cringe over there though (some of the guides on there are really just fanfics in disguise or written 'in-character').>>12848167That's only partially true, Nintendo Power (as in the actual magazine), EGM2, Tips & Tricks, SWATPro, and so on would do that, but usually to get through the first half of a game, then tell you to check next months issue to see how to beat the rest of the game. The actual strategy guides on the other hand, they hold your dick the whole way through (although a lot of the time, especially in the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox era, they wrote the guides based on prototype/pre-release builds of games, so some of the info they tell you ends up being wrong because the devs changed/removed things in the final retail build).
>>12847730>Do anyone here collect players guides?Yes. I hoard just about anything stupid children will overpay for.
>>12848219Yea i remember the ps2 era guides missing a lot of info at the time (prima I think). I never bought them but browsed them in bookstores. So that could be incomplete info from declopers as you say.
>>12847790No. That's the faggot who made up completely different bullshit.
I enjoy collecting these. I think they're a lot more fun to collect than physical discs or boxes, assuming you're planning on emulating anyway. Some of them are really beautiful books in their own right, and they can have interesting non-walkthrough related stuff like staff interviews and short stories and concept art.I usually wait until after my first playthrough to read them though, because like many have mentioned it really is cheating to let them tell you how to win.
>>12851050I've only ever looked through some of the Kingdom Hearts Ultimanias, but they do seem to be ridiculously detailed. As >>12848167 said, I do suspect that Square intended players to eventually buy these books for some of the more obscure shit in their games. KH Birth By Sleep even has ULTIMANIA written on the spine of a book in the opening cutscene.
>>12848167Part of the reason Xevious got so popular was BECAUSE of all the hidden shit in it.
>>12851214>Part of the reason Xevious got so popular was BECAUSE of the youtube i watched
>>12848085They give you the map of every location with positions of every secret, revealing everything. How is that not opening up the whole game i.e. the highest advice? Sure, you still have to go to all those places and do all those things, but knowing what to expect and what you have to do is the most important part. The fact that even if you have a full map of a level you still have to beat it which may still be challenging is the whole reason why those guides did not ruin the games for their buyers in the first place.Sure, you may now know that in that room all those enemies are waiting, but you still gotta beat them.
