I don't get it, it is incredibly linear, the brainteasers are so easy and they only serve to be annoying in the execution, as it is a chore, like how slow is pushing the blocks or just the annoyance of shooting the obvious eye switch or having set fire to the torches with the stick, you ALREADY know what you must do, it's so boring.
Speaking of boring the combat not only is always against very few enemies but there is no reward to it, if anything you'd be wasting resource if you try to be creative and use items like arrows or bombs instead of the same old sword combat.
I don't get it, it's a pretty slow arpg without any part of what makes an arpg fun.

it has high production values, relatively few gamebreaking glitches, and it's easy. that's all critics care about. public consensus never goes beyond this criteria.

I just got to Ganon's castle at the end of the game. I have no idea why people compare this to A Link to the Past, just running around and finding things is so tedious compared to ALTTP. The 3D controls are terrible, imprecise and finicky. It takes forever to equip your bow and attack enemies. I understand it was revolutionary at the time, but it aged like a woman and is not even in the same ballpark as the snes game.
>>

Yes, you don't get it all. Glad we agree with that

The dungeon order is linear until you become an adult and you have more options than the way Navi tells you to go. Not to mention everything you can do in the overworld. (I really wish those rocks to Zora's Domain wasn't there. Then you can do the two child dungeons in either order.)

I think people miss the point of the puzzles. They're more like action challenges that add variety so you're doing more than hitting things with a sword for literally the entire game. A lot of Zelda-likes get that wrong.
They can be puzzling for a child the first time through, and the "shoot the eye" "puzzles" are to teach people how to look around in 3D space when 3D graphics were still relatively new.

Can't say much about the combat. Newer games are standing on OoT's shoulders so it will seem basic looking backwards.

>calling Zelda an RPG
What year is it? 2008?
>>
>>12848965
>so you're doing more than hitting things with a sword for literally the entire game
I wish I could hit things with a sword during the actual combat instead of waiting for these fuckers to reveal their weak spot.
>>
>>12848968
Not sure what you're talking about specifically but you can use the deku nuts to stun enemies and land hits faster.
>>
>>12848969
Not a viable strategy because then you'll have to open the pause menu every minute to switch items.
>>
>>12848976
You have three item slots. More if you're playing the PC port or hacks or whatever. Figure it out.
>>
>>12848979
>Three item slots
Makes no difference if you can't afford to be flexible. One has to be the bow because you have to shoot an eye every minute. Another has to be the ocarina since you need to play a song every minute.
>>
>>12848927
>I have no idea why people compare this to A Link to the Past, just running around and finding things is so tedious compared to ALTTP.
This is borderline bait. OoT has a much larger number of things to find, more of which are hidden in more interesting ways, and its overworld is significantly less tedious to navigate as it doesn't wrap around a large central structure that blocks you.

>It takes forever to equip your bow and attack enemies.
LttP lets you only use a single secondary item at a time. Having three different things aside from the sword immediately accessible at all times is a huge upgrade.
>>
>>12848984
>every minute, every minute
Not every minute. Try making a point without hyperbole. You don't need all your items all the time.
>>
>>12848990
You do however need to switch items all the time!
>>
>>12848775
>has high production values

in 1998.
its primitive 3d slop at this point.
>>
I played it again a couple years back on the pc port and I still liked it. I recommend not using a shield. It makes the combat system more about positioning and I had fun like that.
>>
>>12848965
>action challenges that add variety so you're doing more than the only other thing there is to do in the game
>They can be puzzling for a child the first time through
literally baby game. plenty of other games involving puzzles in dungeons take actual figuring out. lufia 2 mogs the shit out of the zelda franchise in this regard, and its a 2d game from 95.
>teach people how to look around in 3D space when 3D graphics were still relatively new
which aged like milk as people have gotten used to it, and people/children since then have proven that they can understand 3d better than nintendo gave them credit for and dont NEED to be babied that hard.
>Newer games are standing on OoT's shoulders
oot is less foundational than you think it is. people dont need to "look to oot" to make a 3d game with combat. other games were made before oot, and many concepts that you think oot is "responsible" for can be developed as a matter of course given the concept of the situation you're designing for. oot isnt even really "standing on the shoulders" of loz as much as you probably think it is. most things are a lot more independent than you think they are.
>>12848969
needing to use deku nuts still doesnt change the fact that you are actively dissuaded/prevented from proactively using your primary means of attack, unlike many other games (including lttp).
>>12848979
>>12848987
switching items is not only faster in lttp, but you generally have to do it less often. and also you can just proactively use your sword (your primary means of attack) on like 98% of enemies (i can only think of like 3, plus antifairies that you cant. eyegores, the ice guys, and the non-threatening dancing slime things by the witch's hut).
>>
>>12848775
>high production values

For an N64 game. It came out the same year as Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Panzer Dragoon Saga (full voice acting for all NPCs and high quality FMVs), and AFTER Quake II and Final Fantasy VII.
>>
>>12849454
And it's still better than all those games because voice acting is the most useless shit you could add to a videogame and eventually became a huge waste of money because retarded wannabe movie director devs wasted their entire budget on
>LOOK RETARD FROM FAMOUS MOVIE/ANIME IS THE VOICE OF OUR CHARACTER WE WASTED HALF THE BUDGET ON THIS RETARD INSTEAD OF MAKING MORE CONTENT FOR THE GAME
Fuck voice acting, one of the nails in the industry's coffin
>>
>>12849409
Yep. OoT got there first (to 3D action adventure with sword combat) because N64 was the all-in 3D platform with the analog stick. Most other big players were focused on developing proven concepts rather than fully committing to a novel 3D game design top to bottom. Tomb Raider is an outlier in this regard. Credit Nintendo for getting there first, in the highly-specific genre of 3rd person melee-orientee action-adventure (a big/popular genre to be sure), but everyone was moving that way. They just didn't want to deal with Nintendo and were busy making games they knew their fans would like (Final Fantasy 7, Resident Evil, Half-Life, Warcraft II, Baldur's Gate) or innovating 3D genres that didn't need dual analog sticks, like Tekken.
>>
>>12849849
>3D genres that didn't need dual analog sticks, like Tekken
>3D fighters don't need analog controls,

This is the biggest misstep of the genre, I swear. There's plenty of room for actually 3D fighter that actually utilize 3D better and take note from 'arena fighters', Fight Night, Bushido Blade, and 3D Zelda, and polish the whole concept up, but devs and fans are so stuck in existing conventions that they preclude themselves from even taking the idea seriously.
>>
>>12848767
It's been coasting purely off nostalgia for at least the last 20 years. If you were 6 years old at the time and had never played a 3d game before I'm sure Ocarina of Time probably seemed like an amazing game but even for 1998 there were far better games to be played unless the N64 was literally the only gaming device you owned at the time
>>
>>12849905
>better games
Such as? A cinematic platformer that controls like ass? A generic shooter full of brown corridors with nothing to do but shoot things? A jrpg with an awful localization?
>>
>>12849905
This. Same goes for mario 64
>>
>>12849883
Fighting games have become a highly niche genre, and devs cater to that hardcore niche. I don't think there's any way to save it, short of what smash bros did. Everyone and their brother played Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat. Singleplayer, couch multiplayer, arcade fgc. But that era is long gone. It's hard to appeal to casuals without alienating the hardcore, and the hardcore are the loyal fanbase.

I argue even that Banjo and Rogue Squadron are better games than Zelda

>even for 1998 there were far better games to be played
This is completely backward. 1998 was the absolute best year for gaming, period, and OoT blew everything else the fuck away even then.

The thing to understand is that, yes, OoT could have *merely* been what you're implying it was, something riding on the novelty of being one of the first big, really 3D games with an actual world, but little more than that.

But what makes it stand out that that it wasn't, the devs weren't content to just make "babies first epic adventure", and went well beyond that, putting immense thought and polish into how the world is laid out, how item interactions work together within it and the ways you can potentially progress through it, the way scenes are set and camera angles are used, along with the incorporation of music and sound design to deeply immerse you. It all works in such a way that no devs afterwards have been able to replicate it, and always produce things that are much more structurally simple in comparison when explicitly trying to copy it.

MGS, RE2 and FFVII have borderline 2D environments in comparison. The level of production co-ordination requires to get Ocarina of Time to work how it did was insane, on a different level in comparison because you're doing more elaborate stuff than just throwing money at the background artists to get more content that involves your character walking over a bit more more flat ground.

Zelda is walking simulator trash that plebs mistake for a masterpiece because of the "immense thought and polish" that went into a game where you round up chickens into a pen, throw bombs into a giant bowl or walk back and forth filling your bottle with blue shit to unlock the red wall. And the shittiest slow retarded menuing system of all tome.

As someone who loves OOT, TP etc you're completely right. The gameplay is pretty easy and unfun. To me, the appeal of OOT is its world and story, so while going through the Forest Temple is not an engaging gameplay challenge, it's a fascinating place to explore and wonder about.

I think Majora's Mask has more difficult and fun dungeons.

There's more to games than just the execution of beginning to end.
The art, music, ambience, vibes, the soul. Ocarina of Time does all of those things very well, making the game world feel much larger than it really is.
Probably one of the first games to have a night/day cycle, adding to the immersion and giving each area a variety of feeling/atmosphere.
On top of that it has a simple yet versatile and fun movement/combat mechanics, probably the best on the N64. The dungeons, quests, and unlocks actually make you feel like you'd obtained something worthwhile after completing.
It's just a beautiful game all around.

When someone says an N64 game has high production values, it means within the context of N64 games and other contemporaries. There's no point in comparing OoT to Elden Ring and saying OoT therefore has low production value, it just doesn't matter any sense. When you're discussing a historical piece of media, it's always assumed to be within the historical context of the time that media came from.
>>
>>12850587
No retard. Try to pay better attention, I'm not praising OoT nearly as hard as you think. None of those games qualify. Brave Fencer Musashi mostly plays like a top-down game. Deathtrap Dungeon uses 3rd person tank controls with a fixed camera. Fighting Force is the closest example, but is a beatemup with very simple, flat environments with maybe an obstacle or two (and no lock-on).

When you move to 6th gen, you find DMC, Kingdom Sharts, God of War, Prince of Persia Sands of Time, the list goes on and on. Harry potter games probably. They are all much closer to Ocarina than any of the games you listed.

My point is that those games would have existed and been the same regardless of whether Ocarina had released when it did.
>>
>>12850650
>When someone says an N64 game has high production values, it means within the context of N64 games and other contemporaries
>it's always assumed to be within the historical context of the time that media came from.
you must be new here, because people frequently will say that it looks better, plays better, etc than any modern game, or any game in general. they will genuinely tell you that they think it is the greatest game ever made.
>>
>>12850658
>I'm not praising OoT nearly as hard as you think
lmao yes you are. you're also dismissive and moving goalposts.
you said that oot was the first 3d action adventure, 3rd person melee oriented game. it wasnt. nit picking the camera does not make those games not 3d 3rd person. they made their own 3d, 3rd person, melee oriented games before oot. other games had lock on before oot. other games like overblood 2 had camera controls before oot. and yes, also tomb raider exists before oot.
>6th gen
is less reliant on or like oot than you think.
>My point is that those games would have existed and been the same regardless of whether Ocarina had released when it did.
>would have
did you mean to say wouldnt? because you initially seem to claim that other games are just standing on oot's shoulders, which implies that if oot didnt come out, they wouldnt have known what to do, so they "wouldnt" exist in the way they do now. but then you say "regardless of whether ocarina had released when it did" which really only fits if you genuinely agree with me that they WOULD exist as they are without oot, because most of the things that are core to refined 3d were really just a matter of course.
>>
>>12849974
none of these screenshots are from the real game you faggot. this is some pc port or ai bullshit. i love OOT but thats not how the fucking game looks.
faggot.
>>
>>12851401
Rephrasing and clarifying the point because you read it completely wrong isn't "moving the goalposts," idiot.
>did you mean to say wouldn't
NO, you fucking moron. WAS first, DID NOT influence, on VERY SPECIFIC crtieria. Holy shit your reading comprehension is nonexistent. Those games share a more in common with oot than your examples, because the whole industry was moving that way already. If Nintendo gets influencer credit for anything, it was putting the analog stick on their jank controller and SM64 in 1996. Sony responded with the dual shock but it was a few years before that became widespread and worth it for devs to require.
>>
>>12850094
Parasite Eve 1 is not a RE knockoff. It's a turn-based rpg.
>>
If you want more challenging dungeons just play the Master Quest. IMO it's much better than the original game
>>
>>12850539
The nighttime atmosphere in the game is unparalleled.

It's not even that it feels better, or more atmospheric than the day time, as you generally want to explore things during the day more than at night, but the way the night so starkly contrasts with the day, and how you have just enough reason to visit things at night often enough, is just unique to this game.
