Where can I try to scope out a PVM? I live in a place in the US where old people hoard random stuff. Lots of mom and pop shops near me. Trying to get one on the cheap since I'm a poorfag. Did you score a PVM in an unusual circumstance? Lemme hear your stories

I rather just have one of those larger Sony WEGA Trinitrons desu

Weren’t those used in offices?

Based on what I'm reading: local tv stations, hospitals, occasional security monitors. They have gorgeous display

Dunno. I wanted a CRT so I looked aroun on Craigslist, Offerup and Facebook Marketplace and I found a nice looking 20" Samsung that I definitely paid too much for but aside from being lucky enough to dig these out of the trash I think overpaying is the only option.
>>
>>12849171
Oh boy I can't wait to pay $500 to play on a 12-inch CRT like people really did in the 90's

I basically that same unit but those nubs near the bottom are little metal handles to mount it in a rack. It has BNC connections so I haven't connected a game system to it yet. It turns on but IDK if it's even in color. I'm assuming it is.
>>
>>12849401
Hey I'm a retard, it wouldn't have a hue knob if it didn't have color.
>>
>>12849353
Best to ignore the retards. The only way to get one cheap is to make friends with the guys working at your local transfer station/dump and tell them to put on aside for you or just swipe it when they aren't looking. I've gotten many cheap electronics and old graphics cards this way, but ymmv. If they have a shipping container that people put their broken tvs laptops and printers in just walk in with something like you're throwing your own stuff out and grab what you want. Feign ignorance if they yell at you.

PVM derangement syndrome
>>
>>12849573
Thanks for your contribution, but have you considered being a faggot somewhere else and perhaps reading threads about things that actually interest you instead of impotently seething at a screen that can be used for video gmaes regardless of what it's original intended purpose was? They can run doom on a calculator, do you consider that "new age larping" too? Are you always this much of a raging double nigger? Do you even play video games? Why the fuck do you care so much how someone else( a stranger to you, no less) chooses to engage in a hobby? Did a rack mount crt fuck your sister or steal your girlfriend?
>>
>>12849660
I seem to have made a spelling error, I guess you can just disregard my post and continue crying like the little bitch made faggot you are.
>>
>>12849304
I think some of the snes kiosks you could play in toy stores had really good tvs/monitors, maybe not PVM's though, but similar in quality (JVCs maybe?), so I guess OP could larp he's in a toy store and only play in short bursts until his mom comes to pick him up and also place the screen really high so he gets neck pain after a while.

>>
>>12849171
University surplus auctions are a better bet than most any other option. But the pickings are much slimmer than they used to be.
>>
>>12849178
There is no point in owning the 9" PVMs for playing retro games. They have no actual benefits over commercial CRTs other than having the RGB inputs.

Literally just take any PC CRT monitor that can display 640x480, and play your games in a 320x240 window in the center of the screen. If the monitor has 18" viewable you'll have a 9" window.
>>
>>12850726
"Erm, the CRT you're retro gaming on isn't being used the way it was properly intended to!!"

Reddit's that way
>>
>>12850759
I think anons want a small PVM so it doesn't take much space in their rooms, your solution does nothing for that
>>
>>12850726
This thread isn't for you and no one is keeping you here. Go be a faggot somewhere else. It's obvious you're starving for human interaction, regardless if it's negative. That's how I know you're a loser. You lost a long time ago.
>>
>>12850726
I didn't admit anything, other than you're a faggot.
>>
>you're not allowed to use a high quality CRT to play your games because...you just CAN'T OK!?!?!

This nigger is serious.
>>
>>12849171
>cheap
>PVM
Pick one.
You aren't going to casually find a cheap PVM in 2026. It would take a stroke of luck. Even the small ones costed thousands back in the day so mom and pop shops didn't have any. It took me a couple years to find a decent PVM locally but it was not cheap.
>>
>>12850823
Imagine if audiophiles weren't allowed to use anything nice because they used a Walkman growing up so that's what they should always use. That's the modern CRT scene.
>>
>>12849264
Their displays are nasty and overly sharp.
Bro they dont even have speakers most times. Theyre meant for checking if your broadcast is interlacing properly, theyre not for actually watching anything on lol.
>>
>>12850834
>Bro they dont even have speakers most times
Most actually have speakers. Not very goods ones, sometimes mono. There a a few that don't. Thanks for your blatantly wrong input though, we all know you're full of shit now.
>>
>>12850834
>overly sharp
Too bad. They should have put physical adjustment knobs on them, shouldn't they have? Dumbass.
>>

>>

If you are looking for a CRT overall you can search thrifts (if they still carry them) estate sales, garage sales, or local listings and get one. But to get a very specific one, especially a top end one is very difficult
You are better off just saving for it and biting the bullet when you find one listed, or flipping the other CRTs you can find to save up to get this one. This would be difficult to get

Back in the day high-end gear was usually limited to studios and stuff, but it would have been mindblowing to get your hands on it. That high-end gear was affordable for a few years, though it's getting borderline now, at best. Junk-tier CRT's, however, are still junk.
>>
ive been considering driving a few hours to go pick up a 13" in great shape for $350, which is a pretty reasonable price and one of the only ones ive ever seen come up "locally" in years. you really just have to be patient. at this point the people that have, and are selling them, know that retro game guys want them so they go for stupid money. everyone says email your local hospitals, new stations etc. but that shit never works. there are plenty of good consumer sets that will fit your size requirements if you cant score a PVM/BVM. good luck
>>
>>12851127
Zoomers and their consequences have been a disaster for video gaming. A better use of money would be to buy a scaler or converter, its probably cheaper, gives you better picture and allows games to actually be playable without lag.

It's also better for the industry in general because holding to shit like PVM's or CRT's is foolish, they won't be remade and buying a more future proof solution is better but also increases the demand for those items which will foster competition, scale production, lower prices, etc.

I found a pvm 20L5 sitting on the sidewalk in front of a thrift store, presumably the store refused to accept it as a donation
A friend of mine gave me his dads jvc production monitor when he found out I was into them
Bought a pvm1910 through a vague craigslist ad referencing a Sony production monitor, no pictures, no model numbers. That one was $20 and picked up from an old dude at a warehouse filled with film rental shit.
Waited a couple months and called the guys office again and asked about monitors for sale. His daughter answered and said she'd ask her dad. Dad vouched and said I could come through and look through his stuff.
Found literal stacks of monitors. Bought all of the 20" and 13" bvms, some pvm 2030, a couple of vcrs and fucked off. $50 each 20", $20 for the 13"
>>
>>12850793
A 17" PC CRT is barely bigger than a 9" PVM. You are silly. Your whole premise is just silly. A 19" CRT is not too big for a bedroom. A 27" CRT is not too big for a bedroom.

Anon never said a 17" monitor is too big for their room. Also I can just call them a dumb faggot if I want. I don't have to agree to their premise.
>>
>>12851164
That was in Los Angeles. I actually worked at a rental house around 2010-2015. I personally packed up some pallets of monitors to be recycled. We had a parking lot sale and we couldn't sell any of the stuff so we gassed em. I sold a couple pretty soon after. Held on to a few then sold a couple more before moving across the country. Now I'm down to a couple bvm 20" , a 20" sony pc crt, the 15" jvc, and a 13" bvm.
>>
>>12851164
lol, looking at this picture more closely now I wish I'd sifted through more of the small stacks. There are some nice ones in those back rows

>>
>>12849171
They are pretty hard to come by in 2026, you are going to need a bit of luck and some time. The method of contacting TV stations or hospitals is a waste of time imo, but you might get lucky. I would create iso posts for fbmp and cl and keep them refreshed, maybe post them in multiple areas, also expand your zone of search to a few hours away if you can drive that far, it will help. Check medical supply resellers and electronics recyclers, those can be hit and miss though. Prepare to wait a long time and be constantly searching.

Zoomers interest is the reason you now have the best emulation and piracy of retro gaming ever, opening you the opportunity to play just about every retro game ever made
>>
>>12853285

People do that all the time. Honestly the only reason I would ever consider getting another pvm.
>>
>>12853472
Blatant same faggotry. Fuck off nerd
>>
Lol the whiny pvm hater got the banhammer.
>>
>>12853636
There's some truth to that, because zoomers create general demand which is healthy and incentivizes those things, but they have done immense damage as well. Also Emulation wasn't done by zoomers, that's been an ongoing Gen X and Millennial thing.
>>
>>12851145

I have a jvc pvm, but it only has composite inputs. Honestly think the best thing about it is being able to play pal hardware on it as a burgernoid.
