It changed everything in 2001.
>>
Bigly
>>
the game starts to suck once you get to the 2nd island
>>
Objectively, it changed the entire direction that gaming would go in right up until today.

Game is trash at any point. many old games got jank, but you get past that after a few minutes and get used to it. Not with GTA 3. The only reason the game got popular back in the day was because of the big map and you could go on a rampage. Vice City and San Andreas shit on 3 so hard it's not even funny.

Quite a damn bit. It was the biggest video game phenonom up to that point in popular culture. I remember cool adults on SNL making jokes about playing it. People you didn't think were into games got into them because of it. It pretty much started the cinematic open world game. It was crudly made, the graphics sucked, the controls were janky, but it was servicable and offered a game that played like nothing else. It was endlessly replayable. I remember taking turns with friends on a late fri-sat night trying to see who can run from the police the longest and cause the most destruction, or exploring the city looking for secrets. Unlike the later games, the size of the game was perfect for that, and almost every nook and cranny you visited rewarded you with something to find. GTAV for example was the opposite. I remember getting 90% through the game before I even found a secret package, and I was starting to think there wouldn't be any since I started the game off looking in every nook and cranny and quickly realized that it was a waste of time.

VC improved on it in a lot of subtle ways, but I still prefer the grittiness of III and the more vertically the islands had.

III is the best GTA
Vice City is a better III

If it weren't for Atari's incompetence in the third entry, it would've went toe-to-toe with GTA. But hey, at least Saint's Row exists.

i love saint's row (or at least used to). saint's row was so fucking close to doing something with 2 that i remember being giddy for their next release. i thought that they'd actually give gta a run for their money.

They didn't realize SR2 already struck the perfect balance between black comedy and crime drama. 3 pushed it too far and the series never recovered.

I remember how huge this was. Airing at the same time as the sopranos felt really big.

Impactful, but nowhere nearly as much as Floigan Bros was

I hate this board so much.

This thread is one of the better ones which is sad but you're not helping make the place any better
