It's not just the high cost of cartridges that held back this amazing system. It's also the weird controller layout. The explanation that it was made for both 2d and 3d games makes no sense since you can still play 2d games fine on any modern controllers.
Pic related is what they should be like, of course with another analog stick. Two handles for two hands, shoulder buttons at the top and two Z buttons below them on each side.
>>
>>12851426
>pic related is what they should be like
>except it should be a DualShock instead
>>
>>12851453
The design is perfect except for the c buttons, which should be made into a yellow analog stick like the gamecube had.
>>

>rambles on about the n64 like vr is the schizo's personal blog
>knows absolutely nothing about it
>posts 8BitDo's photo of their garbage controller
fuck off, lolcow
>>
>>12851473
Shut up faggot. I know so much about the great system that is the n64. You have no contention with anything I said, having an n64 be like modern controllers with two analog sticks is a great idea. What a stupid faggot.
>>
>>12851474
>lolcow isn't coping at all
nobody gives a fuck about: n64, 8bitdo-do or your shit schizo blog.
>>
>>12851426
>you can still play 2d games fine on any modern controllers
but you can play 2d games better on an N64 controller, are you stupid? Why settle for just fine when you can have good? You literally want a worse experience because the controller confuses you?
>>
>>12851480
holy fuck this lolcow guy is still doing this. You keep using that word wrong how fucking dumb are you its been months. how fucking embarrassing.
>>
>>12851480
This is a board for retro gaming you idiot.
>>12851482
It doesn't confuse me, the shape of it is not ideal though. The directional pad could still stay, there is no issue with that.
>>
>>12851482
for some reason there's a number of samefagging losers that come here that never used an n64 and everything about it was wrong and everyone needs to buy new shit from a fucking retro retailer. op the lolcow is just advertising spam

>>12851484
>>12851485
>when you keep getting caught spamming the board with schizo nonsense, have a mental breakdown and start same fagging again
it's great how everyone on 4chan these days just shits on you instead of ever entertaining any of your low iq loser shit since we all you're a massive loser and fraud that can't even ai spam the board without it all linking back to yourself.
>>
>>12851485
its literally ideal. Dualshock is worse for games requiring analog movement. Xbox/dreamcast layout is worse for 2D games. Having two different hand positions is the best way to make a controller for two different styles.
>>
>>12851487
Are you confusing me for someone else? I just want to make a thread talking about the n64 controller you stupid bastard.
>>12851491
How is it worse? Take a modern controller, replace the c buttons with a yellow analog stick and you're good to go. The two styles can co-exist on that controller fine and there is always button mapping too. I fucking hate how the original controller had one analog stick and three sides to it, it was very uncomfortable.
>>
>>12851494
>Are you confusing me for someone else?
no. everyone knows who you are: a spamming lolcow. your replies are also identical.
>>
>>12851498
Great, so some retarded crazy guy is off his meds and confusing me for some imaginary enemy he's been fighting with on this board for months (years?). Anyway the n64 controller's design was a flop.
>>
>>12851494
>replace the c buttons with a yellow analog stick and you're good to go
You cant do that because nintendo 64 games are made with the c buttons being buttons in mind. Zelda doesnt even have camera controls there its for items.
>How is it worse?
its shitty thumb position. I would never play a random NES game with an xbox controller with my left thumb straining down the entire time, its a bad controller for 2d games. Meanwhile id gladly play any SNES or NES game with an N64 controller. The Dpad is the same as the SNES one anyway.
>>
>>12851501
>Great, so some retarded crazy guy is off his meds
But enough about OP.
>>
>>12851426
I'd rather use the wireless mod kit, with a cool translucent shell and one of those fancy steel Joysticks mine would be the crown's jewel of my controller's drawer.
>>
>>12851426
>makes no sense since you can still play 2d games fine on any modern controllers.
Wow, it is almost like modern controller design wasn't a thing back then.

That's another great idea.
>>12851504
>>12851514
There is no issue with the c buttons being an analog stick, lets say a game uses them for something besides camera controls. You can still push the stick in a direction and have it do the action the respective c button would do. No problem there. Also, the ps1 dualshock controller was a thing around that time.
>>
>>12851426
Good luck playing Ekans Hoop Hurl on that piece of shit, faggot!!!

No, I just read the OP and judged him to be a retard.
>>
>>12851549
I'm not the lolcow guy you idiot.
>>12851540
Why don't you guys understand that a differently shaped controller can still have the existing left analog stick and a d-pad?
>>
>>12851550
>I'm not the lolcow
And yet everyone is laughing at you.
>>
N64 controller is quite good, and as has been said above, cramming two directional control thingies at the base of one handhold is a bad idea. Yes it works but the N64 way works better. Also, the N64's Z button is far better than some stupid second shoulder button. Extra shoulder buttons are clumsy and gun-style triggers feel nice. Sorry OP but you are wrong. Your thread did not deserve to be taken over by fat women delightedly gossiping about interpersonal drama, but nonetheless you are wrong.
>>
>>12851458
You're just wanting to complain about shit. A 6 button design is completely fine. Learn to use a controller.
>>
>>12851564
>>12851565
You idiots are saying that the concept of modern controllers is wrong. That is what you are saying. Think of how dumb you sound here.

Well. >>12851568 Care to join the "gossiping fat women".

>>12851426
I don't think the controller was a meaningful part of the N64's bottlenecks. Yes, it's weird but it also just worked, and its strong point is that its analog stick actually has insane smoothness and fine precision.
The only serious improvement I'd suggest for the N64's controller is to make the analog stick more robust (and lubed from the box, as allegedly they were not), maybe also with a less harsh shape/texture to its tip. Fundamentally, the controller does the job it needs to for its games, ranging from acceptable to outright great.

The serious limitation to the N64 was always its cartridge media. Yeah, there's some advantages to cartridges, but there's also some very harsh disadvantages too. We got great games anyway and I loved them, but it also could never get titles on the scale of something like FF7.

>>12851473
I know 8BitDo doesn't have a pristine reputation, but my SN30 Pro 2 has been quite good.
>>
>>12851589
My saturn style 8bitdocontroller died within a few months, but every other pad I've had from them has been decent, the more modern ones have been really good so I guess they're improving.
>>
>>12851426
They were experimenting, it's impossible to get things perfect on the first attempt.

it was a great controller and should have became the standard. it's three controllers in one. if you hold the outer ones you have old school 2d, the right ones are standard 3d and the left one is a precursor to a dual stick layout where you have one movement option in each hand. in fps moving with dpad/wasd feels better than using an analog stick
>>
>>12851694
I like the controller well enough, but the dualshock shape just made more practical sense.

>if you hold the outer ones you have old school 2d
How many games applied this?

>in fps moving with dpad/wasd feels better than using an analog stick
I really don't agree at all, I find an analog stick for movement excellent. The N64's stick being so fucking precise and fine made it great for that.
>>
>>12851779
>How many games applied this?
the hardware inside the n64 was designed for 3d only, and the controller's dpad is shitty, probably to discourage 2d games
>>
>>12851458
That would render most fighting games on the N64 unplayable

its funny too nintendo perfected it on their chinese n64, idk why they didnt just release controllers like this. i kinda want one but i dont think you can put new games on them

Because it came out in like 2004 when the wii was 2 years away.
>>

N64 Zeldas are more epic than any PS1 RPG.

Having games with drawn out stories with tons of cutscenes and grind is fine on its own merits, but scope formed in this particular way is inferior to being able to explore a convincingly living world that incorporates excellent cinematography regardless of the lack of FMVs.
>>
>>12852164
oh kek
>>
>>12852293
Sure, and I don't even love FF7, but there's other kinds of games with larger scopes, like the Resident Evil ones. RE2 got onto the N64, but it took some godly cramming by a high achieving studio.

The 8BitDo 64 fails as a modernized N64 controller. It nails the octagonal gate and analog calibration, but the N64’s whole point was putting a flight stick into a comfortable controller that worked for everyone, including lefties.
I’m a 36yo ambidextrous fag who grew up on the N64. The 8BitDo 64 feels fine to me because I aim better with my left hand and move with the C-buttons on the right. For the vast majority of right-handed players, though, this layout sucks.
8BitDo figured an Xbox-style shape would fix it. What actually makes modern controllers modern isn’t the shape: it’s the dual analogs. The 8BitDo 64 should’ve kept two analogs and added a switch to disable either one on the fly. That way right-handers could move on the D-pad and aim with the right stick in shooters like Jet Force Gemini, Turok, or Bangai-O.
For most of you, games like Sin and Punishment, GoldenEye, or any other shooter are going to feel miserable on this thing.
I don't know how they fucked up this badly.
>>
>>12851458
That is the WORST part of the gamecube controller!

>N64 Zeldas are more epic than any PS1 RPG
While I like and enjoy many Nintendo titles, Zelda is fucking gay, you have brain damage, and I'm ashamed to be a Nintendo fan because of people like you.

>That is the WORST part of the gamecube controller!
Have you noticed how that poor analog design led to it being used for everything but the camera? In Metroid Prime, the C-Stick is used to select beams, while in StarFox Adventures it's for picking items from the inventory.
There's a rabbit hole on this design idea that ends up with Star Fox Zero and Zombie U.

They're meant to be used as face buttons like on the Genesis or Saturn. Mapping them to the stick on emulator makes almost every game play awkward.

The only good controller, sadly retrobit doesnt ship the white color worldwide.

>>12852412
I'm not ambidextrous at all and never had a problem using C buttons for movement in Turok and South Park. I even swapped to it in Goldeneye and TWINE. Twin stick just hadn't been standardized yet.
