I wonder if the cover of Tengai Makyō was inspired by the music video for Heart Shaped Box. With the cross against a red background and the crows.

I don't know but I always thought this cover was weird because iirc there isn't anything in the game themed around christianity except perhaps one enemy and one symbol at the end game inspired by it

The manual cover is much more representative of the game but I wonder if they thought nobody would buy it with the american flag in the center, since usually in Japan products only had american flags on them when they were made in the US

Maybe you're onto something and maybe the cover was a more sublte way to say "the story is about america" as this video clip probably was the most aired "american thing" on TV for a while
