You like the the savestates, don't you Anon?
Occasionally. Sometimes it gets late or I have to do something else, so I'll come back later.
>>12853259Well it's more fun to be able to test things and load from where you want to continue the game from, rather than having to restart and go through loading screens after each tiny testings.
>>12853259If you used save states, guides, asked someone for help, fast forward, RA, cheats, exploits, skips, extra lives/continues, OP power ups and moves, QOL hacks/mods, rewind or searched for answers, you didn't beat the game. Not only you cheated the game, but also yourself. You brag about your "achievements" to others, yet deep down you know that it was all fake. You didn't experience anything, the challenge, the frustration, the overcoming, improving your skills. You just took a glimpse of what the game has to offer, the same level as "beating a game watching someone else beat it on YouTube". Even a crown made with fake gold, still shines from far away. You cheated not only the game, but yourself. You didn't learn. You didn't improve. You took a shortcut and gained nothing. You experienced a hollow victory. Nothing was risked and nothing was gained. It's sad that you don't know the difference.
>>12853259yeah, they're handy for saving my game mid game so I can return to it later>>12853489shit pasta
>>12853489If you didn't yeet the game only using the basic attack and not even jumping, you didn't beat the game
>>12853259I wish emulators had an option to completely disable them, I can't resist the temptation sometimes
>>12853259I pretty much exclusively use them to get more mileage out of Pokeballs by doing multiple attempts with one ball/not have to track down roaming legendaries multiple times. I dont use them in any other type of retro game but Pokemon romhacks
Hell yeah I do
>>12853259I usually only use them to save time by skipping parts.Like currently I'm playing the Katamari games in which I savestate at the beginning of a mission to quickly start over if not satisfied without in WLK losing your preferred starting position and especially in the first one where cannot even redo a level, only return home and then have sit through the King's whole monologue again and load again.
>>12853259Yeah, I use them a lot, it's more fun that way, rewinding too.
>>12853259it's ok for practice but not even really necessary for most games because there's usually a level select in the cheats or dipswitches
>>12853536you can in retroarch
>>12853259I don't use them because I don't play shit games
>>12853259i just use them like an infinite life cheat. restarting from the begining is ass cancer in like 99% of the games.
>>12853259I like them in the same way I like junk food. You shouldn't use them too much; it's not good for you.
>>12853259>You like the the savestatesI'll be honest and say I only don't use them because I forget they exist most of the time, I have used the rewind function before in specific titles. Predator on the NES comes to mind.I think the only time I ever used them realistically was as a sort of pause function when I need to go do something and want to pick up where I left off without just leaving the emulator running. Even then there's only a handful of games where I felt the need to do this.
i never use savestates, if a game is too hard i stop playing
>>12853259I feel like a god when I rewind.
>>12853259i dont use save states unless im having trouble clearingt something in one go and need to practice. i don't consider that and rewind to count towards "beating" a gamefast forward though, is kino
>>12853489No, it's not.First of all, I've never bragged about my "achievements" because I don't think it's an achievement to beat any video game at all. That's right, I don't play souls-like games.Secondly, I know the difference between watching someone beat a game vs actually beating the game, because I've done both. Yes, I used guides all the time, whenever I can. Because video games don't matter.
>>12855186>Yes, I used guides all the time, whenever I can. Because video games don't matter. If they don't matter why are you using guides? You should get lost within the game and experience it fully. It feels way better to figure it without a guide. If I get filtered, I get filtered. Who cares it's just a game
>>12855201Because time matters more, my dude. Our time here's limited.
>>12855220And what are you doing with the rest of your time that is so fundamental? Jerk off?
>>12855186What do you do when you play a puzzle game?Do you just follow the instructions laid out in the guide without ever trying to solve the puzzles yourself? How is that meaningfully different from just watching someone play the game?
>>12853259I mean look at this shit
>>12853489>nothing was gainedI had fun
>>12855257I never played that but if I had to guess I'd say it's giving you 6 different passwords and you can choose to input only one of them? Which is still a lot. There's no fucking way you have to manually input all of that.
>12853489Soulstrannies gentlemen
If you still uses passwords these days, ur a fag hipster larping as a oldfag, and oldfags abhored passwords. One being mike himself.
>>12855257they should have used bar codes and the gameboy printer
>>12855248Yes, among other things.Look, I use guides that don't spoil the story, ok? I use them to see right away if the guide maker has tried to look for the boss's weakness or not. And if not, that's when I try to find out for myself. As far as I'm concerned, this method has saved me time from trying something and then loading again. So F.W.I.W. I know for myself that I don't qualify as the ones who>didn't learn>didn't improvewhen all I did was took a shortcut in order to learn/improve quicker. And while we're on the topic of save states here, based on recent memory, I even learned of a game that was cheating me, thanks to save states. It's the Monopoly game for the PS2, believe it or not! But the way it cheats you is by not actually doing any dice rolls / RNG when you push the button to roll the dice. Instead, it rolls the dice at the beginning of the game and most, if not all of the game, is pretty much just a long ass cutscene of how the game has played out based on the pre-game RNG! Try it for yourself, you can pretty much predict for example the first 5 or 6 dice rolls since they always landed in the same numbers every single time for me I loaded and tried to roll again, and same with the A.I. opponents' dice roll. Maybe there are intervals when it does it, maybe not. But I didn't feel like getting cheated any further so I stopped testing it. I.I.r.c. this was on the highest difficulty, in case that matters. Anyway, I wouldn't have known this, if I didn't use save states.
>>12853259I'm not a trannycheating
>>12853259I use savestates to roleplay as a time-traveler
I use them for RNG time wasting bullshit like in the beginning of xenogears when there's a sidequest you have to win rock paper scissors like 5 times in a row or the roulette wheel in Suikoden
>>12855220if playing the game is a waste of time, don't play the game
>>12853489I already know I'm better than you at vidya and in physical/mental activities.
>>12853489Asking friends or looking at (the right type) of guides just for hints when you hit a wall I think is entirely fair and normal. Not really a direct solution, just a nudge towards another direction.Something I think could be useful hypothetically, would be some kind of AI bot or something that's been trained on guides (and where someone who has 100% the game has verified and tested the bot to make sure it understand what it's been taught), and where you could ask it for a hint. You select from a roster of supported games (which could be added to periodically), you describe which part of the game you are at, and then you describe what you are stuck on, what part you're not getting, and what you've tried to do.The bot then gives a hint to guide you in a direction. Not too explicit, just enough that you'd start thinking from another angle that you weren't before, you'd still have to reason things out yourself. To try to curtail abuse, your IP could only ask one question per day. Maybe one or two clarifications. Also, the bot should be programmed to NOT talk like a suckup yesman, because that shit is turbo insufferable.
>>12853732Kinda. I can excuse limited and restrained use.>>12855186I'm willing to brag a tiny bit when it comes to games that I'm actually good at and can actually play well. There's some where I just don't need any help or exterior tools at all.Otherwise, I prefer to be humble.
>>12855272From what I remember only 3 of those lines actually are the password and the other 3 are for Player 2, but it has been a while so I could be wrong. Either way River City Ransom had a lot going on, it was more of an RPG and most of the password is dedicated to storing the values for your stats and shit not just what level you are on.
>>12853259>the thecomputah... put typos in... my post...computah, uuh...
>>12855263>>12853489He's autistic. Doing something simply for the enjoyment of it will never make sense to him. Even video games feel lije a job he has to perform properly or he will always feel like he has failed. He will never understand the enjoyment of a game. He deserves our sympathy.
>>12856114>Rewinds every time he make the slightest mistakeMan, I'm having so much fun with my inconsequential OCD simulator.
>>12855404>MonopolyThat's not the game cheating you, that's the game preventing YOU from cheating with save states by doing the dice rolls in advance.Stop acting like you're entitled to a victory. It's okay to lose sometimes. Games are more fun if you lose sometimes, it makes the victories more meaningful.Boss battles are more exciting if you have to try and figure out the weaknesses on the fly. Monopoly is more fun if it's an even match, rather than one player cheating to get the exact dice roll they want every turn.I would hope that attempting and failing to cheat at fucking Monopoly would be a wake-up call that maybe you care about winning a little too much.
>>12855931>hintbotYou can already sort of do this with AI chatbots, but the technology isn't quite there yet.I tested it out of curiosity, but it outright stated the answer (rather than giving it a hint like I asked) and the answer it stated was somewhat incorrect (you can get into Saffron City with any kind of drink, not a specific one).As AI continues to improve I think it will become really nice for things like this. It's already arguably better than shitty Fandom wikis and GameFAQs guides that spoil the ending of the game if you try to look up where the red key is or whatever.
yeah it's a nice feature when you're in the mode of experimenting with a game or you want to create your own level select, having save states for every stealth area in mgs3 for instance so you can play it whenever you want.or games like tonyhawk where you're obviously meant to try and perfect a level fresh but the game frustratingly locks objectives once they've been completed.using it to skip and bruteforce past difficulty is kind of whatever though. fair enough for limited continue games but if a level based game is tedious enough for me to go for savestating I'm probably not having much fun with it anyway.
>>12855186basedthe cool thing about save states is it lets you get through games much more quickly without having to spend days grinding on certain sections like you did back in the day. this allows me to see and play the cool later levels I wouldn't otherwise reach. Then I can go on to another game. There are thousands of old games I never played and things like save states make it easier to get into them. Sometimes I am doing it to avoid starting from the beginning in games that screw you over like that but MOST OF THE TIME I'm just cutting a few seconds of cut screen loading so I can retry a hard part more quickly.
>>12856052It mite b kewl to just type in a bunch of gibberish and see if the game gives you anything
>>12855248I'm raising 3 children to not be retarded like me
for me it's hardcore cheevos
>>12856227Well, that's what I'd expect with a general purpose bot and model, I meant something more purpose built.I'm not even sure it'd be good at all anyway, but I just had this idea and thought maybe it'd be a use for AI which I'd actually like.
>>12856227Also, GameFAQs guides can really vary, some were really well written and actually show restraint with spoiling. The game escapes me now, but there was one for an RPG which would actually do a series of spaced out hints for some progression.
>>12856692Same GameFAQs guides are great, but you never know whether you're dealing with a fucker who'll say "Don't bother training Flaerith because she gets killed by Flepiroth at the end of Disc 1" until you see the spoiler.
>>12853259I use them exclusively as saves for retro games that are too long for me to finish in one sitting. Mario 3 for example, usually do it over a few sessions but it has no built in save feature.
>>12857085No Mario game should ever have as many autoscrollers as 3 does. Even if I like SMB3's powerups more, I'm glad SMW toned out the amount of autoscrollers.
>>12853536RetroAchievements Hardcore Mode does this for you
>>12853489based mike "yes I read nintendo power, just for the articles, I would never ever ever ever use the guides or codes listed inside I promise" matei
>>12853489Based.
>>12855764But it's not an complete waste of time though! It's like the RC Mini copter in GTA: Vice City, you know? Even though that part of the game is considered a complete waste of time to everyone, it's still part of the game. A game that everyone liked, if that wasn't obvious yet.Now do you get it yet?
>>12856186It's the game's mechanics designed to make you have a guaranteed bad start though.Instead of making the A.I. smarter and harder to fool with cheap trades or whatnot, they decided to make sure the A.I. gets most of the properties first. You can argue the semantics all you want, but I consider this cheating.Another way they could've done is make the A.I. coordinate with or help each other from time to time, in order to take you down first, that would be more fair in my book, rather than to play a "game" that's pretty much just me watching myself fail.
