Any retro games that do this? Or is it only a modern phenomenon?
>>
>>12855080
Planescape Torment?
>>
>>12855080
Deus Ex tries to bait you into it.
>>
>>12855083
>>12855087
So it's a western phenomenon?
>>
>>12855094
MGS1. Liquid did nothing wrong
>>
>>12855080
>>12855094
That comic is literally the start of Moon """rpg"""
>>
>>12855083
Planescape: Torment doesn't do anything like that.
Any evil options are just you chosing to be a cunt
and you can't accidentally do it at all.

Anyway no it's mostly a modern phenomenon. Spec Ops garbage.
>>
>>12855102
moon works because at the start you want to kill everything. no one wanted to save the dog you posted
>>
>>12855108
Nah I saw the pretentious twist coming so I didn't want to kill the dog
>>
>>12855080
4th panel is a fail, a pretentious game like that would try to insist you should quit to try to trick the player into saying out of spite.

Fuck those games by the way, they try hard to be clever but are not clever enough to actually give the player choice, so they just railroad you into only having one choice then chastise you for doing it, it just feels fake and like they are trying too hard. And fuck even harder the even more pretentious idiots who try to argue "Well, you could just quit the game" in an attempt to silence any criticism.
>>
>>12855094
No idea, barely played any Jap games.
>>
>>12855094
Kojima has done a variation on this several times.
>>
>>12855102
I think you're glazing over a great deal of nuance, not least among it the detail that at no point is the dog ever killed or implied to be dead.
>>
>>12855080
the purpose of that narrative is to critique "just following orders". in-universe, your character is "just following orders". whether you agree with the critique or not is a separate matter but complaining about the game making you do it is pseud shit.
>>
>>12855080
>>
I never understood why people got triggered by this so hard. Did you also throw down Crime and Punishment screaming, "Fuck you, you made me kill the granny to proceed the plot"? If you don't like the story, that's fine. If you don't like that bad things happen in the story, then what the fuck do you want to play?
>>
>>12855484
1. you fucking dumbass
2. in a book you don't have agency over what happens, you are a 100% passive observer
>>
>>12855484
>Did you also throw down Dostoevsky because it was too confronting
A lot of people do.
>>
>>12855107
>Any evil options are just you chosing to be a cunt
>and you can't accidentally do it at all.
OP pic don't look like an accident.
>spec ops
i don't play CODs for the plots if that's what u meant.

Another one is where Mario64 forces you to perform a fourth trimester abortion on the baby penguin.
>>
>>12855567
>Dostoevsky because it was too confronting
his books just made me sad and scream internally "HE'S JUST LIKE ME!!!" im not russian.
>inb5 banned for retro /lit/
>>
>>12855569
basedo italia working class man!
>>
>>12855427
Was going to say this, though the game doesn't explicitly guilt you.
>>
>>12855080
Only game I know that actually does this is Spec Ops: The Line.

>Did you also throw down Crime and Punishment screaming, "Fuck you, you made me kill the granny to proceed the plot"?
People do this all the time. I do it too. I dropped picrel after a particularly unpleasant rape scene.
>If you don't like that bad things happen in the story, then what the fuck do you want to play?
Games where the protagonist is presented as heroic?
You know, like, 99% of all games?
>>
Does Last of Us count as retro?
>>
>>12855580
>rape scene.
based Flashman.
>>
>>12855083
>Planescape Torment
Pretty clear you never played it, fag

This game takes it to the max.
>>
>>12855602
there are various ways to solve main quest stuff and such, but you can choose the violent/"asshole" options. am i wrong?
>>
>>12855484
You seem to not understand the difference. No book blames the reader for events the author wrote. In OP's comic, the dev blames the gamer for something the dev programmed to happen.
>>
>>12855604
You're retarded if that's what you think the game is going. It's a super tongue-in-cheek comment on the idea that "Video Games cause violence"
>>
>>12855427
But it was him or me
>>
>>12855416
>the purpose of that narrative is to critique "just following orders". in-universe, your character is "just following orders"
Except that completely fails when you have no choice but to follow orders in order to continue the game. You don't get to force the player to doing the only action you allow with no other option, and then go "Oh My God! How could you possibly do that?" acting like it's some kind of great writing and/or commentary on anything.

>>12855484
On one hand you're an idiot because like >>12855503 said you're a fucking dumbass who can't tell the difference between a medium you can only observe like a book or movie of which you are in no way participating in, and an interactive game where you are controlling the character doing the action.

On the other though that still doesn't change the fact that as much of a dumbass you are the game still doesn't get to be preachy about an action it forced you to do with no other option and then chastise you for it. It would be like if the book chastises the reader after reading about it, with it's defenders going "Well, you could have stopped reading" or "Well, you could have written in something else in the book yourself", that's pretty much on par with people who argue you could just quit the game being a valid alternative option.

>>12855573
It better not because again, you had no choice. It was more of a "Sucks that you had to do that" situation rather than "How could you do that?"

>>12855578
See, now this one is valid. You in no way have to take his sign for any reason, that's you going out of your way to be a dick. There is a difference between choosing to be a dick when you have other options and the game chastising you for it, and having the only option the game gives you to be a dick and then being chastised for it. The latter feels like someone who lacks the nuance to create the former properly doing so anyway, and acting like they created some groundbreaking metacommentary.
>>
>>12855574
Metal Gear Solid does this several times per game. That's why they introduced non lethal weapons, so they could do it harder.
>>
>>12855621
I highly doubt anyone blames the player in the game, unless it's fourth wall humour. Other characters may blame the main character, or the main character may blame himself, but the player is just there for the ride.

Not a book but Funny Games is a non interactive, narrative based piece of media that is openly hostile to its own audience for the violence it depicts.

>not a single person mentioned the actual ur-example of this trope
Fucking zoomer board

>Scorpia: Now, I did not like Infidel. I did not like the premise of the story. I did not like the main character. I did not like the ending. I felt it was a poor choice to have a character like that in an Infocom game, since after all, regardless of the main character in the story, *I* am the one who is really playing the game, really solving the puzzles. The character is merely a shell, and after going thru the game, I resent getting killed.
>>
>>12855825
>“how dare you want to experience an uncomfortable situation in the comfort of fiction, the one true creation of mankind? You're a jerk and deserve to be called that. All media should be happy Care Bears singing about how happy they are."
>>
>>12855649
again, that's the point. it's to highlight how in-universe, the character cannot comprehend disobeying the order.
>>
>>12855649
>Except that completely fails when you have no choice but to follow orders in order to continue the game.
Imagine someone like you reading a book.

Alright, in your opinion, what is the best example of a retro game that did this well?
I assume you surely must have something in mind to speak with such confidence on the subject.
