>zoomers will call this game "Final Fantasy VI"
>b-but
You aren't Japanese.
>>
this board is really just garbage now isn't it
>>
>>12855575
But I'm also not North American so I choose to call it by the game's original name.
>>
i was calling it that over 20 years ago. what now?
>>
We didn't get the game until the PSX port where it was called VI

And I'm not going to larp as an American, so it's FFVI
>>
>>12855579
OP's is actually one of the 'best' threads, but maybe that's what you meant
>>
>>12855596

Back in the day I was against that, myself. It just seemed really stupid to me to use the VI as if you actually had access to all of the previous five games. Obviously you could learn Japanese and import them but hardly anybody was actually going to bother with all that. It just seemed pretentious or something to use the Japanese numbers.

It's nice that I never made a really big deal about it because that'd just be a thing for me to look back on in embarrassment now that both fan translators and professional developers of remakes/rereleases have made the whole series available to everybody. I was on the wrong side of history!

I don't care about whatever OP is actually trying to get at, if anything.

???

You can always try to salvage the thread and post something good instead of whining, how about that huh HUH
>>
>>12855579
Arcade or PC gaming, everything else has been overrun by memespewing wanna-be zoomers who have no interest in playing retro games, just shitposting about retro games. Arcade and PC gaming still keeps them away since it involves more effort than shitposting.
>>
>>12855579
It's incredible what zero moderation does to a board
>>
>>12855575
And you aren't a woman yet nobody makes a shitty thread about it.

It was officially called VI in the US on playstation as well.
FF Anthology 1999.
I was on FF forums by '01 and everyone called it VI already.

Once we got dial up we all figured out that the series was different here.
Now that we knew there was another, real FF III, it became obvious to call it VI from then on, as Squaresoft themselves did >>12855842 . Calling them "III (US)" and "III (JP)" would be pointless as the JP series numbers work out for all of the games (obviously).
Keeping the "argument" alive is a performative larp at best. We get it, you think you're an OG for knowing the original US (international) title of a wildly famous game, have a headpat.

Now compare that to the US releases of the Dragon Quest games. It went:

Dragon Warrior
Dragon Warrior 2
Dragon Warrior 3
Dragon Warrior 4
Dragon Warrior 7

and then

Dragon Quest 8

There never existed a Dragon Warrior 5 or 6 anywhere and then suddenly you're getting the 8th game is a series with a different name
>>
>>12855865
European release of 8 just dropped the number altogether as it was the first game to get a release.
>>
>>12855575
I might not be Japanese, but my ROMs all are.
>>
>>12855575
I've been calling it 6 since the English translation of FFV dropped in the late 90s
>>
>>12855575
Most zoomers are playing the cropped GBA port, which is called 6, not 3.
>>
>>12856514
This was unironicly my first introduction to Final Fantasy and couldn't be more thankful
Same with Sonic, i love both the Genesis and early Dimps games, we had it so good back then
>>
>>12855579
Has been for years.
>>
>>12855575
great board retards
>>
>>12855575
So where are Final Fantasy's IV V and VI American?
>>
>>12856870
They disappeared into the same void as Dragon Warrior 5,6 and Leisure Suit Larry 4
>>
>>12855575
People online called it Final Fantasy 6 in the late 90s. There was only a 4-5 year span before that where it was commonly known as FF3. Maybe you're too young to remember.

Mostly accurate, people were already calling it VI but a lot of people often called it FFIII still online up until Anthology (late 1999). After that it gradually faded in favor of VI, but you still saw it called III enough that the NES one would be called IIIj or 3j to distinguish it without confusing people.

I think the final nail in the coffin was Final Fantasy VI Advance for GBA in early 2007, after that came out most people accepted saying VI and the remaining holdouts started to look odd. This is mostly based on my memory, but I think it's reasonably accurate.
>>
>>12855579
The best way to enjoy this board is to make your own threads about the games you're currently playing and post your thoughts and screenshots as you go. That's it. It's that simple. If everyone did this the good threads would easily outnumber the bad.
>>
>>12857005
Oh yeah, Final Fantasy VI Advance, but just as important for the shift was the Final Fantasy III remake releasing for DS in 2006.
>>
>>12855845
> £ price

Britfags ARE just larping American by default, and not all us Europeans are from that place
>>
>>12855848
You think people were pretentiously using the titles from the dumbed-down American series in order to look smart?? That is insane. It went in exactly the opposite direction, until Square and romhackers began making the full series international in various ways.
>>
>>12857039
Not "trying to sound smart," but "trying to act OG."
It's the 6th mainline game in the series. The devs called it VI.
Now that we have the full series it make it easier to communicate with others if you just say VI.
Saying "III" is like saying *I* was there, *I* remember, I'm a real gamer because blah blah. I'm from the '80s and grew up with NES / SNES and it was called FFIII. But it's easier for everyone to understand if you say "VI," everyone knows exactly what game you're talking about and we don't have to get into these piddly ego fights over it.
>>
>>12857057
Or maybe you'd just call it FFIII because that's what it said on the cartridge and you played it from that cartridge and didn't pay close attention to what was happening in some faraway country...
