What is its legacy 30 years later? I have seen it described as one of the most important pieces of gaming software ever released. Is that an overstatement, or is it accurate?
it was revolutionary as far as emulators go
It made future generations used to staring at ugly raw pixels instead of smooth & glowing CRT visuals.
>>12855702They weren't using flat monitors back then, zoomer.
>>12855702yeah they should've used a crt filter for the crt monitors everyone had
>>12855702The Game Boy uses raw square pixels. They were so proud of it it's even written on the front of the console itself. This was in 1989
>>12855712>>12855714CRT monitors look sharper and more detailed than CRT TVs because they feature a much tighter dot pitch and support significantly higher resolutions, you absolute dumbfucks.
>>12855719
>>12855702How did people play their NES roms on personal computers prior to NESticle?
>>12855720He's right and you didn't get the same experience playing on PC monitors as TVs. TVs sucked in a good way.
>>12855585THANKS SHITMAN!
I once plugged my playstation into the video input jack of my pc of that era. I was surprised that it looked like shit.
>>12855585Imagine if all emulators looked like this
>>12855717Game Boy needs a shader to look as muddy as the og screen, so it's classified as honorary CRT.
>>12855585>made one of the best NES emulators>made one of the best fighting games>quietly leftThis is the legacy. Humble and based.
Never used it.
>>12855585Mindrape did nothing wrong
>>12855702>It made future generations used to staring at ugly raw pixels instead of smooth & glowing CRT visuals.I actually don't mind and think it looks alright. It's not like you didn't see sharp pixels on a CRT monitor that ruined your eyes.
>>12855702Retard.
>>12855901>best fighting games???
>>12855585I only know about it because an FF3 translation I used said not to use it.
>>12856258
>>12855719>winning the special olympics
>>12855712>Neither are actual CRTs
>>12855702my PC video card had composite out that i used to connect it to my TValso>Thanks Shitman!
One of the authors came back to try to make the most ridiculously excessively accurate NES emulator in existence by making it not just cycle-accurate, but transistor-accurate by simulating all the transistors. He called it MetalNES, but only worked on it for a short while before apparently abandoning it since the last update was 4 years ago. I think it ran at like 0.1FPS in it's current state.https://github.com/iaddis/metalnes

>>12855712Curved or not, PC monitors at the time were still significantly higher resolution, and were generally connected by VGA, which was miles ahead of the RF people generally had their NES hooked up with, and even still miles ahead of composite. (The Famicom and even late NES refresh didn't even have composite, they were RF-only). Most of those CRT effects were a result of the RF/composite signal blending pixels together, not the CRT itself.I remember playing Mario RPG in ZSNES in the late 90s and realizing how I could not see the M in Mario's cap as well anymore because the image was too clear on my PC monitor compared to when I played it on my TV off my SNES.Even most CRT TVs were gimped by their inputs, not the physical screen itself, people have RGB modded them before and gotten a significantly clearer image (provided you could get an RGB output from whatever you plugged into it). It wasn't the CRT screen itself doing most of the blending work.
>>12855728They didn't, they had to play with their testicles instead, that's how the emulator got it's name when it replaced the well established hobby of testicle play. Follow me for more retro curiosities
>>12857176Greatest victory quote of all time
>>12857168the fact that you can visualize the electrical impulses in the chips is pretty cool. it's also neat how the image looks like a capture of a real RF signal. is that part of what the emulator simulates or just a filter?
