is it retarded to think games actually look better without shaders except in specific circumstances?
It's all about personal preference. With the standard polyphase scanlines on a Retrotink, I feel I get a perfectly sharp and not-blocky-looking image without having to deal with ugly solid black lines darkening the image. Most on this board would look at this and call it disgusting tho.
>>12856345Yes but also that shader is wack
>>12856345The only retarded thing is thinking anyone's opinion other than yours matters when you're the one looking at it.
>>12856345Shaders are like vegan meat or cheese. They are absolutely revolting, and have zero resemblance to the real thing, unless you are delusional. So yes, games look better without shaders.
>>12856345why do shader people do this? no one plays games by cropping a tiny section and doing a 30x zoom on it.
i feel like the people who would care enough to use them would just have a crt anyway.
>>12856345No, I like the look of the hard pixels and being able to appreciate the pixel art. I get wanting to reproduce how it looked on a CRT but I still haven't seen a filter/shader that looks good. I recommend just getting a CRT if you want to do this. Do people who like vinyl use a "vinyl" plugin on spotify that adds pops and cracks to the music? No, they just listen to vinyl
>>12856501>I get wanting to reproduce how it looked on a CRT but I still haven't seen a filter/shader that looks good.I've seen some shaders that look alright and I like playing with them, but I've also seen this stuff on a variety of different boomer boxes at cons through the years and concluded that it doesn't matter what shaders you use because all CRT's are different and the only shader that will look good to you will be the one that looks exactly like the specific TV you had growing up. When I emulate, I just throw on Blargg's NTSC with scanlines to smear the pixels a bit and that's good enough for me.
>>12856525blargg ntsc is still GOAT
>>12856525scanlines dim the picture, use bilinear for smear
>>12856345Yes, especially for that game metroid which takes massive advantage of of the blending and extra colors added by an NTSC video signal.
>>12856345Shaders generally don't capture the look of an actual CRT, even a tiny shitty consumer CRT will look better than pretty much any shader.
>>12857708it's not about the crt, just the pixel blending.
>>12856525>all CRT's are differentYeah this. I had three CRTs growing up, the first one was an ancient black and white tv parents gave me specifically to play vidya on. They all looked different, mostly not how the shaders look and that's completely fine. This board's obsession with "authenticity" is so performative and retarded.
>>12857162HDR can fix that. It's tough to dial it in such that it looks like real CRT bloom and not just eye searing LCD, and lord knows there's fuck all consistency in PC HDR, but with effort it's the solution.
>>12856345That's not how the game looks on a crt
>>12858323And?
>>12856501>Do people who like vinyl use a "vinyl" plugin on spotify that adds pops and cracks to the music?it's really common now for artists to add fake analog noise to their digital recordings. The majority of pop songs do add some level of fake crackling
>>12856345does right even have composite or rfis it even a consumer tv
>>12858403It’s a shader like OP saidI’m inclined to mostly agree that shaders aren’t great compared to a CRT
>>12857708The main reason for people thinking shaders look bad is they display them on a monitor which doesn't have enough brightness to match a CRT's brightness when the shaders are applied. It takes about 400 nits of LCD brightness to maintain CRT brightness when CRT-Royale is applied. CRT-Guest-Venom-Advanced requires even more. Then there's the problem of resolution, and I think quite a lot of people are trying shaders on their phone at sub-1080p resolutions and coming to conclusions from that.
>>12856501>Do people who like vinyl use a "vinyl" plugin on spotify that adds pops and cracks to the music? No, they just listen to vinylThis often used comparison just doesn't work for the most part, and the deeper you look into it the more it actually supports the use of shaders. If you have a digital recording of an analog musical peformance the "shaders" are essentially built in. You wouldn't need to add additional effects on top of this. In CRT terms the comparison would be watching a very high quality video recording of an actual CRT screen, perfectly centered and refresh rate matched. Then you have digital music, which you have to be careful with because a very large amount of samples and electronic instruments are still analog. If you create a digital music file of all digital instruments, sometimes known as chiptune, then you run into the same shader argument again. Is it meant to be listened to a the highest possible quality? Or are they meant to be listened to through an analog conversion that adds noise, loss, and alters the overall sound such as listening through an RF connector and CRT speaker? You'll get different answers from different people.
>>12856345Left is better.
>>12856345It's what the majority of people would have actually thought at the time. The modern idea that "games are designed for CRT" was not a thing. Everyone WANTED their games to look like the left image.
It's just not a big deal
>>12856345Yes, going from a CRT to a HDtv in 2007 was like turning on the lights, everything was more clear and colorful, even with the jaggies with analog cables it still looked better than what we had.
>>12859360>Everyone WANTED their games to look like the left imageno they didnt fucking retarded lying poser
>>12859529Yes they did. Expensive, high quality well-tuned CRTs always had more visible pixels. Nobody thought that TVs looked better than computer monitors.Today's shaders emulate the look of a cheap shitty CRT TV, no one at the time would have thought this was desirable.
>>12859928>Today's shaders emulate the look of a cheap shitty CRT TV, no one at the time would have thought this was desirable.Oh yes they would have, and I can prove it.ZSNES added the option to fake scanlines all the way back 1997. Even on 640x480 VGA monitors, people were already looking at the sprites and thinking to themselves 'Damn, it looks too crisp on this screen.'
>>12856347>>12856516Looks like dogshit
>>12860124lmao the second link is a tvyou fucking performative clowns i swear
If only I knew how bad things really are
>>12860247Is that really what you think CRTs do?Or are you just making fun of shaders
>>12860247Right still looks better.
The art was made with scanlines explicitly in mind. The scanlines may as well be a part of the graphics. Anyone who grew up without these scanlines playing only modern consoles on modern screens since 2010 or later is a zoomer faggot with no relevant opinion on the matter.
>>12860289For comparison
>>12856345I don't care about shaders, they usually just worsen the performance
This is how Super Mario Bros looked on a CRT btw.
>>12861227Uh no it did not Stop doing hard drugs and too many alcohols
>>12860870Simplifying it to just "scanlines" is misleading, but yes, the pixel art was quite literally designed with CRT.s in mind and its why everyone who thinks the point and desirable thing was to stare at the raw pixels, is fucking retarded. Its like implying that artists secretly want the colors to look like they do on a raw digital form and that the base/canvas/paper/wood/what the fuck ever the paint is on is some accident and hindrance with whatever texture and properties it imparts. The people working on those retro games meticulously designed the visuals to not only make sense when viewed on a CRT, but actively benefit from it because of things like scanlines, color bleed, halation/glow, the brightness levels and potentially even slight curvature of the screen, although usually in the sense of designing around it
>>12861410>according to a few interviews from developers who said it 30+ years after the fact.>even though most consoles allowed for RGB out as far back as Master System.>even though design documents for games like Super Mario Bros clearly show character art drawn in graph paper/pixels>even though arcade was the gold standard which ran at higher resolution with RGB monitors >even though a vast majority of CRTs are different which results in a different blend depending size and quality.>even though most people used RF up until 6th gen, not compositeYep.
>>12861431Do you think arcade machines look like modern screens? its unbelievable how clueless and retarded you are
>>12861439Nobody ever claimed that. Of course this message is a waste of time since you can't read anyways.
Blow up the image even bigger so it's like your eyeball is touching the screen and then we can have a genuine conversation. Retards.
>>12860289I'm impressed you got that good of a photo of a crt. The refresh rate must be damn fast. Or your camera shutter speed is super damn fast. Idk. The picture looks good, okay!?
>>12861439This is new levels of stupid for this. You might look up what RGB is.
>>12856345At this point it's whatever. I still prefer how games look on a consumer-level CRT (and there's loads of variation even here), but I can live with sharp pixels, or rather I've had to learn to live with them because my GPU is too shitty to use the actually good shaders without making the fan go brrrrrrr and slowing everything down. What I really, truly miss is the motion clarity. I can kind of approximate it with black frame insertion, but it also cuts into brightness, and even then it's still not there yet, or at least my monitor doesn't have a high enough refresh rate for it to look really good. All this to say is I have to cope because I don't have the hardware necessary to do what I'd like to do.
