is it retarded to think games actually look better without shaders except in specific circumstances?

It's all about personal preference.

With the standard polyphase scanlines on a Retrotink, I feel I get a perfectly sharp and not-blocky-looking image without having to deal with ugly solid black lines darkening the image.
Most on this board would look at this and call it disgusting tho.

Yes but also that shader is wack
>>
>>12856345
The only retarded thing is thinking anyone's opinion other than yours matters when you're the one looking at it.
>>
>>12856345
Shaders are like vegan meat or cheese. They are absolutely revolting, and have zero resemblance to the real thing, unless you are delusional. So yes, games look better without shaders.
>>
>>12856345
why do shader people do this? no one plays games by cropping a tiny section and doing a 30x zoom on it.
>>
i feel like the people who would care enough to use them would just have a crt anyway.
>>
>>12856345
No, I like the look of the hard pixels and being able to appreciate the pixel art. I get wanting to reproduce how it looked on a CRT but I still haven't seen a filter/shader that looks good. I recommend just getting a CRT if you want to do this. Do people who like vinyl use a "vinyl" plugin on spotify that adds pops and cracks to the music? No, they just listen to vinyl

I've seen some shaders that look alright and I like playing with them, but I've also seen this stuff on a variety of different boomer boxes at cons through the years and concluded that it doesn't matter what shaders you use because all CRT's are different and the only shader that will look good to you will be the one that looks exactly like the specific TV you had growing up. When I emulate, I just throw on Blargg's NTSC with scanlines to smear the pixels a bit and that's good enough for me.
>>
>>12856525
blargg ntsc is still GOAT
>>
>>12856525
scanlines dim the picture, use bilinear for smear
>>
>>12856345
Yes, especially for that game metroid which takes massive advantage of of the blending and extra colors added by an NTSC video signal.
>>
>>12856345
Shaders generally don't capture the look of an actual CRT, even a tiny shitty consumer CRT will look better than pretty much any shader.
>>
>>12857708
it's not about the crt, just the pixel blending.
>>
>>12856525
>all CRT's are different
Yeah this. I had three CRTs growing up, the first one was an ancient black and white tv parents gave me specifically to play vidya on. They all looked different, mostly not how the shaders look and that's completely fine. This board's obsession with "authenticity" is so performative and retarded.
