RetroArch is hard to use.
>>
>>12857681
The UI is god-fucking-awful, that's for damn sure.
>>
>>12857681
It's strictly for people with an IQ of 90 or above, so I can imagine the average 4channeler struggling with it.
>>
>>12857681
use chatgpt if you have any questions
>>
>>12857683
>no, it's actually great, you just don't get it
>>
>>12857681
Honestly fightcade and its game auto-downloader are much easier to use
>>
>>12857683
It truly is the great retard filter. Everyone I see having a spergout about it is very clearly low intelligence.
>>
If you can't use retroarch in 2026 that's a you issue.
>>
>>12857681
It's hard to set up but then it's the easiest emulator to use once you have everything the way you need it. I went through the set up process 3-4 years ago and have barely touched any settings since. I just launch it, pick up my controller, select a game and that's it. Start+Select to go back to the menu as needed.
>>
>>12857681
the thing about it is that the configuration problems are multiplied the second something weird happens, some weird issue with windows mapping your controller can bring retroarch screeching to a halt. with stand alone emulators you can usually just do a quick reset or remap and it 'just works'.
>>
>>12857681
No it isn't.
>>
>>12857712
That's more of a Windows problem than Retroarch. Never had it happen to me in Linux, which just werks.
>>
bitching about retroarch would likely subside if it put more than one option on a column or everything on a single screen
>>
>>12857703
>but then it's the easiest emulator to use once
no? it's still fussier and more laborious than every major stand alone emulator.
>>
>>12857716
ok but then you have to deal with all of linux's problems.
>>
>>12857703
you have to change everything on a per core and per game basis if you want it running as good as possible. even then it still brings all the woes of software emulation. it's nice to have one program that has everything pre gen6 instead of having to download 70 different emulators though
>>
>>12857682

Not if you go to user interface settings and eliminate all of the unneeded options. Also rgui is way better than the ps3 style menus.

>>12857681

There is a slight barrier of entry but in the end it overall ends up being much easier than using 20 separate emulators and it simply offers more in terms of features. Once you get everything configured then backed up everything is smooth sailing.

unlikely.

stops being worth it the first time you're blocked from playing a game over some obscure issue..
>>
>>12857681
It's got a steep ramp-up but once you figure out how to operate it no it's not hard to use. The main thing is it is designed around using with a controller and if you open it and try to use your mouse you'll be all kinds of confused.
>>
>>12857749
>ops being worth it the first time you're blocked from playing a game over some obscure issue..
Literally never happened to me
>>
>>12857720
Linux is very stable now. I have zero problems with it and Retroarch never gives me issues on Linux.
>>
retroarch is like sodomy, you get used to it and over time it gets less painful, but you still get aids
>>
>>12857754
Same but I've stopped even arguing with Windows holdouts. At this point they probably already know the deal and just don't want to bother learning a new OS.
>>
>>12857720
What problems? Compared to winblows Linux is flawless
>>
>>12857681
it's really not

it's probably hard at first because the core downloader isn't visible by default. you have to make it visible

userinterface> menu item visibility> show core downloader

this was the main issue i had with retroarch

i also had a issue with retroarch when using it with my raspberry pi. There was no option to set the key bindings to default. i had to delete all the config files to set them back to the default keybindings

I've gotten used to the UI per se but it's hampered by absolute braindead decisions like the newest version DISABLING CONTROLLER REMAPPING BY DEFAULT (let alone adding the option in the first place, for what???) or not being able to unapply a shader anymore without turning off shaders entirely (you use to be able to press start on Load Preset to remove the current shader).

Choice paralysis. Just like the autists who can't handle full romsets. The ven diagram isn't quite a single circle, but it's close.
>>
>>12857681
if you're a retard maybe. the UI is still fucking awful though. I don't know why you'd make a PC software that's designed to be used with a controller instead of mouse
>>12857828
>I have to updooooooooot
>>
>>12857859
Some of the default menu and interface options are a big reason. There are like five things you need to do right away to make it ready to use. They're not hard but a quick quide would help most people. You don't care about the vast majority of the settings or options until you've become very comfortable using Retroarch.
>>
>>12857681
Yes, and more importantly, there's no reason to use it. Just get a standalone emulator for whatever you want to emulate.
>>
>>12857859
most people can't do anything that's more complicated than dragging and dropping a file, even that is too much for some
>>
>>12857910
>there's no reason to use it
What if I want proper scaling at non-square pixel aspect ratios across all systems?
>>
>>12857737
Mednafen has many emulators and easy to use without ui bs, it uses cli so its easier to script right away
>>
>>12857794
I will be surprised if they don't. I doubt that the likes of Claude can design a really nice UI from scratch to do everything that RetroArch does, but designing a really nice UI wouldn't be necessary for surpassing RetroArch. You'd just need a mediocre one, and the best of these AIs can probably already manage that. With a moderately talented human steering the process, it could actually become good.
>>
>>12857918
Can't you just configure it for each system? If you got a Playstation for christmas, you wouldn't complain that it worked differently than a Game Boy. I don't think I even was able to avoid those black bars as a kid, and I didn't care.
>>
>>12857936
The issue retromeme is 20% UI, 50% retarded architecture, 50% stubborn autism of command-line people who simply didn't experience working programs

Cores have no parity in some simple things, like swapping the disk image. Rebinding buttons without a visual clue that the program uses a Super Nintendo layout with inverted face buttons? Oh yeah

And of course, no core settings are available before launching the game
>>
>>12857948
In case you're not baiting:
Displaying non-square pixels on a modern display will result in uneven looking pixels and visible shimmering when there's movement in 2D games
Scaling methods like sharp-bilinear fix that, and not every standalone emulator has that, while you can use it with any core in RA

If you're looking for better compatibility/performance, then it's always preferable to use dedicated emulators for specific hardware. Personally, I resort to RetroArch almost exclusively for its AI translation thing
>>
>>12858602
This is always a bad argument. Navigating the GUI isn't playing a game. It's worse doing that with a controller than a mouse and keyboard. Nobody has complained about the GUI in other emulators and having to learn all the small differences between them when using multiple ones.
>>
>>12858897
>Nobody has complained about the GUI in other emulators and having to learn all the small differences between them when using multiple ones.
In what world? People have been bitching about the schizo GUI designs in random emulators since emulators have been a thing. Do you not remember the UIs of pre-stenzek PCSX2, or Dolphin, or ePSXe?
>>
>>12858989
>Do you not remember the UIs of pre-stenzek PCSX2, or Dolphin, or ePSXe?
Nope. I never really had an issue with them either. If it did happen then it was still much less than how much RA gets complained about.
>>
>>12858989
Those were fine. Because they were designed for computers. Computers that have a mouse.
>>
>>12858609
We should be happy to identify things that filter effectively for not being a lazy retard. That's your team, act like it.
>>
>>12858897
Disagree. Other emulators are super annoying to switch to because they don't accommodate controllers. If I'm sitting fifteen feet away from my pc I don't want to get up to press some weird key combo to bring up the config menu (Dolphin looking at you). From retroarch I can always bring up the SAME menus with the SAME button combo which I can set to my liking. It's sort of absurd to have a VIDEO GAME SOFTWARE that doesn't have every type of menu accessible via a controller.
>>
>>12859282
That's fine, obviously there's a use case for that. But for people playing at a PC or who have a mouse and keyboard available and want to use that for navigating the extensive GUI, RA just doesn't let you do it very easily. Playing a game with the controller just doesn't mean it's always going to be okay to use the program with one too.
>>
>>12859313
The thing is that if you're playing games you have the controller right there. you are using it. there's no need to switch to the kb and mouse. If you're playing games that are controlled by kb and mouse such as PC games you're not using retroarch anyway. it's for emulating consoles, which didn't have a mouse and kb.
>>
>>12859313
the main weakness i can think of when using retroarch has to do with adding art for the games. that is annoying, but it's because their automated downloads have a shit source, not because the controls don't work. everything else works great.
>>
>>12859326
>The thing is that if you're playing games you have the controller right there. you are using it.
Yes, but Retroarch is not a game. Mouse and keyboard are better for using programs. I understand if you're playing on the couch with a controller, but if you're sitting at a PC then it just feels worse to have to use a controller for something it wasn't really designed for.
>>
Retroarch is certainly convenient for most systems, but yeah it's got several problems.

1. Poor UX.
Config options organization sucks major balls.
Most used options are not priotized and brought up top.

2. Retarded defaults:
- ESC quits instead of opening menu, at least they added a warning now but still a retarded default
- forgets last used shader folder unless you explicitly tell it to remember (why is this not default?)
- some PS1 games don't respond because retarded default digital controller and no one came up with a solution so the cores can automatically set analog or digital
- PS1 emualtors button-combo to switch from digital-analog will 99% reset the game, effectively making the default combo utterly and completely useless

3. Sometimes crashes for no apparent reason, as if they couldn't run the damn core dlls in a different thread so the whole thing doesn't fucking runs off the room like a child throwing a tantrum.

4. It doesn't fucking save shit until you manually quit/save. So if you were hasty, or crashed, you may end up having to reapply all the settings again.

5. Enabling bfi or beam shader requires changing multiple options
>>
>>12857681
Yep, outmogges by PCSX2 big picture mode.
also I fucking hate ares the absolute worst dogshit garbage
>>
>>12857737
>it overall ends up being much easier than using 20 separate emulators
Why? I don't get the "one program (app, these days) must do EVERYTHING" psychology.
>>
>>12857681
Hard to use but that atleast it's system req. don't require a new PC
>>
>>12859326
I’m not going to use my steering wheel to adjust the A/C in my car. I want to press the buttons.
>>
>>12859351
You aren't using it as a program. It's just the menu screen for your console basically. There's only one reason I ever interact with retroarch outside of game playing and that is to update the boxart because their built-in system sucks. It works great with the controller but the source it pulls from sucks, so that's not even a problem with the application controls.
>>
>>12859408
Cars have had a/c controls on the steering wheel since the 20th century. Retroarch has the same. You are literally too dumb to find the settings, but i acknowledge that is an issue with Retroarch. You have to set up five or so options immediately to make it usable and that's easy if you know the program already but confusing otherwise. There should be simple guides for it but everyone is too dumb to explain things now. Your inability to figure out is also unimpressive.
>>
>>12857681

playlists>import content>manual scan
in this menu, you've got multiple options including 'content directory' (wherever your ROMs are located; you have to navigate to their filepath), 'default core' (tell RA which core to use for the playlist you're making), 'scan recursively' (tells RA to open any additional directories nested in the filepath you selected under 'content directory'), and 'scan inside archives' (tells RA to include zip and rar files in its scan if you didn't feel like extracting the ROM before you put it in your games folder). afdter you click 'start scan', it'll obviously scan for any valid game ROMs and automatically sort them by system. from then on, they'll be under your playlists for quick access. mine looks like picrel.

Forget every copy of mario64 being personalized. Every install of retroarch is different. Figuring out the menus on one doesn't help with the next. Sometimes controllers work out of the box. Sometimes they need some buttons remapped through menus that make some sense. Sometimes the controllers are completely messed up by default and the menus that appear to have controller mappings dont actually do anything or are absent. When it works its pretty good. I like the shaders. I don't like rolling the dice on whether it's a working install or something from a near parallel dimension where A and B being dpad up and right makes sense.

Same here. It's shocking how commercial emulators still don't apply some of RA's QOL improvements to this very day. Can't think of a single commercial emulator that DOESN'T have input delay.

RetroArch is in that weird spot where it's too obtuse and bloated for the average user, yet lacks the customization options necessary to be a powerful front end.
Typical freetard software.
>>
>>12861824
>yet lacks the customization options necessary to be a powerful front end.
Yeah, I feel this way whenever I want to get full usage out of my Vader 5 Pro. It's got two extra face buttons, which makes it perfect for both Saturn and Genesis games. The only problem is that my "C" and "Z" buttons are merely clones of "LB" and "RB", rather than registering as native buttons. This isn't a problem for Genesis games, but it could be a huge problem for Saturn games that fully take advantage of the 3D Pad.

King Terry the Terrible was right when he said that only fools are enamored by complexity. True genius lies in simplicity. Retroarch's UI only impresses idiots, and only it's idiot developer can defend it. I should not have to spend more than a few seconds setting up a single emulator.

>>
>>12857681
No, it isn't. You'd spend just as much, or even more time optimizing individual emulators. Other than some control and slight video config, Retroarch is usuable on boot. I got rid of Mednafen and all my PC Engine emulators because Retroarch will run everything you throw at it with no issues, and to a better standard as it pertains to the PCE, WS, VB, PC-FX, and NGP. Best of all, it runs huge Genesis carts no problem. With the exception of that overhyped belt scroller game, of course. My only cons? No 32X. Yet. You are just lazy.
>>
>>12860719
>Every install of retroarch is different.
Oh god this is the most absolutely cancerous thing about it and why its defenders are retards who make no sense. No I can't just "look up the solution" to whatever problem I'm having, because any given answer will be on some random forum post which only applies to some specific version of the software and I can't trust anything to actually work how I expect it to because it can even provide me methods of interacting with it that I can trust to work.

It's legitimately the single worst designed interface I've ever used for anything, and I'm speaking as a software dev who's worked on archaic banking systems. If I'm actually making something like a ROMhack it's always easier to just whip up a "poorly coded emulator" stand alone and shove the ROM into that over attempting to trust the garbage that RA puts you through to do anything interesting.

I like RetroArch in concept. It provides a good service and I do understand it well enough to MOSTLY get what I want out of it.

The real problem I find with it is I just hate how little I'm able to actually understand the totality of the software. Like it's not meant to be taken as a whole, just what you need it to do for you, even though it leaves me questioning if I'm even using it properly.
>>
>>12857681
It's open source. If you have a problem with it, why not fix it?

The answer is because you're too low IQ (and more importantly, low agency) to even attempt to figure out how to do so, which of course explains why you're too low IQ to even use the software effectively.

Frankly, I'm not sympathetic to your problems, as they aren't my problems.

>If you have a problem with it, why not fix it?
Most people complain about the GUI in Retroarch. Asking someone to make their own is a bit silly, especially when you can pretty much go and find decent emulators that already have a decent GUI.
>>
>>12864552
Same issues on retroarch, really.
The defaults in some cores are retarded, and will very easily cause that to happen (mame and a few others)

I always forget how painful is to get everything back to sane when starting from scratch.
>>
>>12857681
I've used it for years and never had any problems. I can't help but think you must simply be retarded if you find it confusing.
>>
>>12863779
Because I can just downoad SNES9x. An emulator that has had a functional UI for decades.
>>
>>12865254
I don't find it confusing, just tedious.
>>
>>12865254
I'm guessing you followed a guide of some kind, because you have to admit it's obtuse. It starts up with a series of menus, each with their own submenus and sub-sub-menus, and your first port of call is to download a core, but this is confusingly in "Core Updater" which obviously you'd ignore because you don't want to update existing cores, you won't to download new ones. When you figure this out, you download a PS1 core, or a DS core or something and you navigate the GUI to try and load the content, load in X core, yes... crash to desktop. Why? You google and find out that even cores that have simulated BIOSes in their native forms often don't in their retroarch cores and they just crash if you don't have the right files in the right place. What files in what place? You google that too and all you get is pricks saying "we don't support piracy" and "we can't give you information on copyrighted files." Bullshit, you extracted someone else's premade one and you don't even understand what I'm asking. I didn't ask for copyrighted BIOS files, I want to know WHERE IT'S LOOKING FOR THEM, and WHAT IT EXPECTS THEM TO BE NAMED. Eventually you learn there's a way to turn on debug logging which *MIGHT* dump a "trying to open blah.bin" into a log file. And so eventually you get it running. And it runs but only in basic bitch mode. How do I configure the core to render hi-res at least? Configuration? Nope, that's just the master config. Video options? Nope. Core configuration, that's it. Hmm, why are all these things that should be sliders just bare numbers that I can't overtype? Why are the dropdowns all empty and not populated by defaults?
And so on, and so forth. At no point in its entire miserable existence has it been a good option for emulation. It's just overused by people who get sexual pleasure from configuring obtuse programs with customisable frontends and chinkshit ARM emulation boxes that will never get a real GUI port of windows emulators.
>>
>>12857681
It's semi-usable once it's set up, but holy shit is it way harder to set up than it needs to be. Mesen-CE and Ares are far more usable.
>>
>>12857681
Its typical linux bullshit with pedantic requirements.
you need all the right romsets for some reason why does it matter it just does!!!!!
Every other windows emulator is like oh look you've got a rom here I'll play it for you.
Retroarch is like "nice rom you got there, I don't recognize it at all so I won't play it.
Fuck you.'
>>

I welcome these tards vibeslopping a retroarch competitor. If it's good I'll use it. It won't be, but they're welcome and even encouraged to try. One thing good with AI is that it might make packaging emulators as Retroarch cores less effort-intensive.
>>

MAME is like a capital crime next to RA's petty shoplifting in this conversation. If you think RA is a problem you've never opened MAME. That is a program that is legitimately dogshit and made to be as repellent as possible.
>>
>>12865661
Retroarch's main issue for the user tweens complaining ITT is that it runs on like every single fucking platform that exists. This means there are wild differences in things like install paths and some specifici functionality. This makes searching reddit-tier forums for assistance difficult.

In my observation it's mostly Android problems I see when looking up fixes for RA stuff. That's even improved now that so many chinese handhelds are running Android.

People complaining about RA do not appreciate what it is and what it does, they just want to put a nickel into the machine and get a bubble gum, but without the nickel.
>>
>>12865820
>who aren't tech-literate
True, but should the tech-illiterate even be using a common front-end for emulation of dozens of different hardware dating back 30 years? Tards seem to think that RA is just an "emulator that sucks" and have no idea what it is and why it works the way it does.
>>
>>12866108
the gui is an abortion but what the emulator actually does and the fact that it exists in the extant that it does is an actual miracle
>>
>>12863783
Yeah you're butthurt. Remove the anal beads and it'll stop, troon.
>>
>>12865630
That's more of a MAME issue. You can add unverified ROMs to RetroArch if you add them manually. It's how I'm able to play my English-patched copies of the PC98 Touhou games.
>>
>>12866117
Agree that it does a lot of impressive stuff. That only compounds the crime of the UX problems.
>>
>>12865813
The Retropad bullshit is the worst thing about it. If they axed that and let you map buttons however you want like in every other emulator, it'd be a step in the right direction.
>>
>>12866108
If MAME has a silver lining, at least it doesn't abstract your keybinds through the RetroPad. Thank fuck.
>>
>>12866127
>>12866129
I've never had any problems with the way Retroarch maps keys. In fact that is one of the things it handles better than a lot of standalone emulators. 95% of the time I open a game on whatever system in RA the controls work immediately. Changing them to my personal preference per system or game is trivially easy.
>>
>>12866129
I still use RA because I like having proper scaling and VRR across all cores, but I can't defend RA's input mapping. Trying to set up turbo buttons is even more rage inducing
>>
>>12866134
So? It's still trash. They should just make it normal
like MAME or PPSSPP. Complete freedom. Also mapping a system with a keypad is rough.
>>
>>12857681

>>
>>12857681
The design is very human. Very easy to use.
>>
>>12866840
Agreed. If fucking MAME can figure it out, RA should be able to as well.
>>12866848
Yeah, I've heard the devs behind it suck. I wonder if the reason we don't have an actual good libretro frontend is because they've been blocking it or sabotaging it behind the scenes.
>>
>>12857681
Basically turned my friend off of using emulators forever. If I had just handed him SNES9X emulation wouldn't have left such a bad taste in his mouth.

This shitty UI would crash and force you to rebind all the fucking keys in its stupid interface.

Good. Filtered shitter.
>>
>>12857681
I don't get why it can't have pre-configured emulator "cores". Why the fuck does the user have to configure everything and tinker with settings they likely do not understand for each individual game!? Shit is annoying. You have to learn about graphics pipelines, rendering, and multiple other things you likely have no interest in just to get strictly worse performance compared to every pre-configured standalone emulator anyway. What the fuck is the point?
>>
>>12857683
I am not smart at all and I find it very easy to use
>>
>>12867767
>What the fuck is the point?
It's supposed to be like arch linux. you install it and gives you a barebones sandbox to play with it however you want, with no bloated features

there's different approaches for the user who does software emulation, depending on their machine and their display. some users want a low res look with crt filters, some want it crisp and upscaled. some people prioritize latency, others are on a potato and dont care about it etc

and if you ever tried to implement canonical defaults tinkertrannies would be bickering for years over which particular settings should be default
>>
>>12857681
its not hard but its autistic and annoying, autists tolerate retarded user unfriendly design and wield it as an achievement, a badge of honor, actual loser neckbeard virginal shit
>>
>>12857681
genuine dogshit UI but it's good otherwise
>>
>>12857682
I still don't understand this. Super easy to use for me and every suggestion I hear people give is to remove options.
>>
>>12857681
The main thing that stops me from using it is the wsy controllers work
There's a lot janky with Retroarch, but It's whatever, I can manage.

But controller mapping is always such a tedious and frustrating process that Ill boot up a game, realize the Retroarch reassigned controller port 1, and scrambled the inputs even when I assign it back to my desired controller, and decide I cant be assed to deal with it.
>Have to select the right controller assigned to the port
>Have to bind controls to the "retropad" in the main menu (thankfully you just bind to a button press)
>Have to manually set the controls in the core menu, not by binding with a button press, but by manually setting the corresponding retropad button, to the core's buttons
>Have to test what the core's buttons even do in-game since It's not standardized
>Save game/core override in both the input menu and the core menu but Retroarch will probably overwrite this for some reason when you next launch it

And that's just configuring for ONE person.

GOOD FUCKING LUCK if you want to play a multiplayer game with even one more person.
>They bind their controller to the retropad
>Confused as you walk them through the binding for the core menu and ususlly forget what button they assigned to what on the retropad
>Usually have to go in and out of the game like 10 times testing what buttons do what since they cant just press a button to bind
>They decide after a little bit they wanna change their control
>Have to deal with more confusion through Retroarch's convoluted input menu
>Better not fucking try and play with this person again because chances are Retroarch scrambled shit again
I will never do multiplayer through retroarch again
>>
>>12857737
>it overall ends up being much easier than using 20 separate emulators
It really doesnt.
The only reason I use Retroarch isnt because I want to consolidate emulators It's because
>Runahead emulation
>CRT Shaders better than any alternative
>Some cores and their options better than their console's standalone emulator (N64, Saturn and PS1 come to mind for me)
>Universal rewind feature (More useful and convenient than just save stating when labbing/practicing old fighting games, since you can use it in conjunction with save states)
I have a bajillion emulators regardless of Retroarch and just launch my games in them from Playnite, and that's more consistent than dealing with Retroarch. It's just a shame Retroarch is good in other respects that I need to rely on it.
>>
>>12869769
What the fuck do you need options for? Maybe retro console games aren't for you.
>>
>>12869921
