Why does almost no one mention the first Street Fighter game? unlike other games this one is more of a single player game and its fun if you have never beaten Sagat in this game you are not a true Street Fighter fan
>>
It's fun for what it is, but Street Fighter II blew it away.

First game on CD

Because there isn't much to do in here. Only 1 fighter, no combos and your best bet is to spam special moves even if they have weird input times.
>>
I like the weird earrape gamelan soundtrack in the later stages

Because it's a terrible game that nobody played. Then Street Fighter 2 game out and was extremely successful. Kids back in the 90s literally thought that SF2 was the first game and calling it "2" was a marketing gimmick or something. Capcom themselves didn't even acknowledge SF1 for decades after it came out.

ok
>>
>>12862876
If nobody played it why did they make a sequel?
>>
>>12862931
they only released the first one so the second one could have two in the name, standing for two player
>>
>>12862931
I guess they thought they could do better? Who knows?
>>
>>12861873
Because it's just not very good no matter how you slice it, and it got completely overshadowed by the far superior sequel.
>>
Wasn't someone working on like an improvement hack/mod of this game to make it actually decent?
>>
>>12862931
It did "acceptably" in the arcade but it was not anything to write home about. This was the era where everyone was just throwing shit at the wall to see what would stick and that's why the "sequel" to Street Fighter wound up becoming Final Fight. This new art style and the far more fluid and immediate combat gave them fresh hope that they had cracked what it took to make an enjoyable fighting game so the true 1v1 fighting game sequel was greenlit. And the rest is history.
>>
It's nothing that special and SF2 basically blew it the fuck out. The only notable thing anyone cares about is that one variant of the cab had pressure buttons that eventually had the padding deteriorate and end up fucking up your hands.
>>

>auuuuwwhhh waaiiiite

It's incredibly mediocre, forgettable, and a non-entity. You can thank it for beimg the first in the series, and eventually getting SF2 which started the fighting game boom, and saving arcades for a couple more years.
>>
Someone is porting Street Fighter to the Amiga. There was already an Amiga port released back in the day, but it was very choppy and barely playable.
So what's the point? Why would someone waste their time on this, the game will still be shit even if you make a 1 to 1 conversion.
>>
>>12863832
>the fighting game boom, and saving arcades for a couple more years.
multiplayer killed the arcades. bemani saved the arcades
>>
>>12863854
i think this new version requires an 68020 or greater
>Why would someone waste their time on this
because they can. it's a waste of time trying to port over tile based arcade titles to a system that only understands bitplanes. i think i saw dude making the sonic port trying to port over music and the .mod file just for one level is several hundred kb! i don't think these faggots have much of a clue and just winging it and forgetting that the dominant amiga platform for gaming was the A500 and everyone kept making games for it until the amiga died.
>>
>>12861873
It's very hard to play.
But it was actually a pretty big deal in its day. Got the cover of Gamest, massively hyped reveal party in the USA, very advanced graphics and sound for the time.
If someone tells you no one heard of Street Fighter until SF2 they're underinformed. For late 80s arcade gamers it was already a well known game.

Also, I've read/heard a couple of anecdotes but have no specific evidence that there were at least a few actual tournaments for the game. Which would go against some of the established lore about how Japanese players didn't start playing SF2 vs mode until someone had the idea to make head-to-head cab setups. But these SF1 tournaments might have actually been points competitions for the single player mode. It's quite underexplored video game history, not helped by lots of people repeating surface level takes that are inaccurate, such as the discussion around six button design only coming around due to the pressure based buttons (the game was designed that way from the beginning, support for the six button version was always planned for cocktail cabinets).

Because that anon is dead wrong and SF1 did get a lot of play, definitely enough to warrant a sequel.
Here is an image from the March 1988 issue of Gamest, several months down the line from the game's late 1987 release. This is the second month after the cocktail version was released. The game is sitting at #1 on the table charts, and #11 on the upright charts (the highest it reached on the upright charts was #4 I think). In an era of absolute titans going up against games like After Burner and Outrun. The numbers next to the rankings are the objective earnings, and those numbers are massive compared to the later eras. Like Street Fighter in 11th place would be a #1 in the early 2000s
>>
>>12863926
>they added SF1 characters to SFA that means SF1 was successful
Retard. Most people thought those were new characters. There were literal magazine articles back in the day that wrote about the new characters in the game, and the actual new characters were thrown in in with the returning SF1 characters with no mention of SF1. You would know this if you were actually around back then and didn't get your info and impressions after the fact late-millennial/zoomer scum.

I accept your concession.
>>
>>12863926
Birdie and Adon were the only returning SF1 characters that weren't in SF2.
>>
>>12861873
I kind of wish that Street Fighter 1 had gotten the fatal fury special treatment, but on the other hand I guess that's just alpha so maybe it's fine.
>>
>>12865659
And Birdie looked nothing at all like he did in SF1, to the point where he mocked the discrepancy by saying "I was sick that day."
>>
>>12861873
The first game just didn't stand out compared to Street Fighter 2. I think that's why Street Fighter 2 got ultra popular. I can appreciate SF1, but it's just not as good as SF2. What sucks is that for a long time, I couldn't buy SF1 to go with SF2 in my Street Fighter collection. So I considered the Street Fighter Movie game as the definitive SF1 at the time for my collection.
>>
>>12863913
>If someone tells you no one heard of Street Fighter
It's hyperbole meaning the difference between a reasonably successful and popular game and an all-time great, world-reknowned, genre-establishing, generation-defining game. In the early 90s, SF2 was probably among top 5-10 best-selling games of all time, in any genre. SF1 sure as hell wasn't anywhere close to that. Very few games ever reach that level of fame and success.
>>
>>12865659
>series
As in more than one game, dumbass.
>>
>>12865776
The only other returning SF1 characters were Gen in Alpha 2 and Eagle in the non retro ports of Alpha 3.
>>
>>12865878
Wait nvm, Eagles was in the GBA port.
>>
>>12865879
I think he was in the psp port of alpha 3 as well, and they surprisingly backported that content into the alpha 3 dash port on the fighting jam collection.
>>
>>12865878
So that's your cope? That three returning characters from SF1 isn't a SF1 reference?

How about the huge frickin' scar across Sagat's chest and Sagat's entire backstory about losing to Ryu and seeking revenge? Every SF n00b asked about that and eventually learned it happened in the first game.

SFII eclipsed the original so hard that nobody wanted to talk about it ever again

>>12862876
Actually it was pretty popular with certain cliques of arcade goers at the time. It has a deserved reputation for being balls hard to execute the moves reliably, but I knew people who could play the game and play it well. It was also a real looker for 1987, you couldn't not notice it when you walked past it. In a post-SFII world it became a broken relic overnight, but it briefly had its place in time.
>>
>>12866236
>That three returning characters from SF1 isn't a SF1 reference?
No, my point was that you said "serveral" like they brought nearly the entirety of the SF1 cast back when that was clearly not the case.
>How about the huge frickin' scar across Sagat's chest and Sagat's entire backstory about losing to Ryu and seeking revenge? Every SF n00b asked about that and eventually learned it happened in the first game.
That was a retcon, no version of SF1 ever tells you that Sagat got a scar from his loss, as far as SF2 lore is concerned, SF1 may as well just have been Ryu and Sagat's spar.
>>
>>12867115
>as far as SF2 lore is concerned, SF1 may as well just have been Ryu and Sagat's spar.
It literally is. They only ever reference that fight, and not even from the game itself, but rather how the animated movie showed it off in the opening scene.
>>
>>12867115
>three isn't several
retard
>as far as SF2 lore is concerned, SF1 may as well just have been Ryu and Sagat's spar.
Every SF2 noob got this story from older players in the years between SF2's release and the animated movie. It doesn't have to literally be spelled out in the SF1 ending. Because it *was* spelled out in the Hyper Fighting manual.
>>
>>12867452
Ryu's height and weight make no sense. And there's no such thing as a 7'4" Thai guy.
>>
>>12867452
So the only thing of value in SF1 wasn't actually in SF1 or anything exclusively related to it?
>>
>>12867452
>doesn't have to literally be spelled out in the SF1 ending
I think it's disingenuous to believe that capcom had this exact plot point hanging around for 4 years instead of the most likely probability that capcom just randomly decided Sagat would look cool with a scar when bringing him back for SF2 and then gave said scar canon lore.
>>
>>12867552
Capcom adding the scar is still a reference to SF1 even if SF1 didn't have it. It's a retcon, and a retcon has to have to retroactively correct the continuity of.

This whole thread of discussion started with "Capcom didn't even reference SF1 for decades" which has been completely debunked.
>>
>>12867528
You're saying this about the game with a green-skinned, red-haired huehuehuezillian who can emit electricity from his body because of Amazonian electric eels or whatever the fuck.
>>
>>12861873
No console ports, do we couldnt try it out on ZSNES
Most people don't care about arcade emulation
>>
>>12867901
Those brazilian monkeys are freaks. That's more believable than a 7'4 Thai guy. Or Ryu looking like that while being that light.
>>

it was ported to Turbo Graffx cd.

enyways the arcade game pioneered some things that gets overlooked.

It was also ported to the Amstrad CPC.
I think the game would have a different legacy if it had a port to the Famicom or Megadrive. Especially if that "port" was kind of just a different game with playable CPU characters and better controls.

I never played it because Major Magic's wanted me to spend 2 tokens on a game that lasted 30 seconds trying to control it with pic related, oh yeah, no explanation of how to do moves or anything.

or I could spend those 2 tokens on a couple old faithful games like moon patrol or bump n jump that I could play pretty decently and beat a few levels on.

if i wanted to blow my tokens on a hard game (which I wold do once a trip) i'd hit up the sit down afterburner for 4 tokens, just for the motion thrill.
>>
>>12867528
Even with his original old japanese artwork's musculature Ryu should weight at least 90kgs, old weight to mass calculations really didnt made any sense, not to mention KG > POUNDS/LBS
>>
The deeper you dig into the history of this game and Takashi Nishiyama's directing style, the more clear it becomes that this game is really the first Garou game, and Street Fighter II is built from very different design DNA.
Go back and play Fatal Fury 1 and it feels a lot like Street Fighter 1, in all the bad ways.
